For decades, they were the house band lurking in the background of Muppet chaos.

Theyโ€™ve survived exploding scenery, questionable management, psychedelic fashion choices and a drummer whose preferred volume setting appears to be VIOLENCE.

But in 2023, Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem finally became the stars of their own television series.

And frankly, it was about bloody time. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿธ๐Ÿฅ

๐ŸŽฌ WELCOME TO THE MUPPETS MAYHEM

Released on Disney+ on 10 May 2023, The Muppets Mayhem took one of the most beloved bands in Muppet history and shoved them right into the centre of the story.

The premise was gloriously simple.

Despite spending decades playing music together, The Electric Mayhem had never recorded their first studio album.

Yes.

Decades as a band.

No album.

Thatโ€™s either incredibly rock โ€™nโ€™ roll or absolutely terrible management.

Probably both.

The ten-episode series follows young music executive Nora Singh, played by Lilly Singh, as she discovers that her record label still has an old contract with The Electric Mayhem.

Seeing an opportunity, she sets herself the seemingly straightforward task of getting the legendary band into the studio to finally record their debut album.

Straightforward?

With this lot?

Absolutely not.

๐ŸŽน MEET THE MAYHEM

At the heart of the programme is the classic Electric Mayhem line-up:

Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards.

Floyd Pepper on bass and vocals.

Janice on lead guitar and vocals.

Zoot on saxophone.

Lips on trumpet.

And then thereโ€™sโ€ฆ

๐Ÿฅ ANIMAL.

Drums.

Screaming.

Chaos.

Possibly several insurance claims.

Together theyโ€™re everything youโ€™d want from a fictional rock band: eccentric, unpredictable, ridiculously colourful and completely committed to doing things their own way.

The genius of The Muppets Mayhem is that it doesnโ€™t try to turn them into ordinary television characters.

Theyโ€™re still weird.

Theyโ€™re still hippies.

Theyโ€™re still operating somewhere several miles away from reality.

The world has changed around them.

The Mayhem havenโ€™t.

And thatโ€™s where much of the fun begins.

๐Ÿ“ฑ OLD-SCHOOL MUSICIANS MEET THE MODERN MUSIC INDUSTRY

One of the showโ€™s best ideas is throwing this gloriously old-fashioned band into the modern music business.

The Electric Mayhem just want to make music.

Meanwhile Nora has to deal with deadlines, streaming, promotion, social media, record-company expectations and everything else that comes with trying to release music in the 21st century.

You can almost hear every veteran rock musician watching it muttering:

โ€œYeahโ€ฆ sounds about right.โ€

The band donโ€™t particularly care about algorithms.

They donโ€™t care about marketing strategies.

They donโ€™t care about whatever social platform everyone is arguing about this week.

They want to jam.

And occasionally disappear on some completely ridiculous adventure when theyโ€™re supposed to be recording.

Basically, theyโ€™re every band thatโ€™s ever given their manager a nervous breakdown.

๐Ÿ˜‚ ITโ€™S A MUPPET SHOW โ€” BUT ITโ€™S ALSO A MUSIC SHOW

Thatโ€™s the important bit.

The Muppets Mayhem isnโ€™t simply a Muppet comedy with a few guitars thrown into the background.

Music is genuinely at the heart of the series.

The story revolves around creativity, songwriting, friendship, musical chemistry and what happens when a band thatโ€™s existed forever finally attempts to capture its sound on record.

Thereโ€™s plenty of silliness โ€” obviously.

You donโ€™t put Animal in a television programme because youโ€™re chasing gritty realism.

But underneath the jokes is a surprisingly affectionate celebration of being in a band.

Anyone whoโ€™s spent time around musicians will recognise bits of it.

The personalities.

The arguments.

The distractions.

The endless messing about.

The moments where absolutely nothing gets accomplished.

And then suddenly everybody starts playing together and everything clicks.

Thatโ€™s the magic.

๐ŸŒŸ THE GUEST LIST IS ABSOLUTELY BONKERS

Because the programme revolves around music, The Muppets Mayhem also managed to pull together a ridiculous collection of guest appearances.

The series features musicians and celebrities including Lil Nas X, Tommy Lee, Billy Corgan, Kesha, Chris Stapleton, Ziggy Marley, deadmau5, Steve Aoki, Zedd, Paula Abdul, Susanna Hoffs and โ€œWeird Alโ€ Yankovic, alongside names including Morgan Freeman, Kevin Smith and Danny Trejo.

Thatโ€™s not a guest list.

Thatโ€™s a festival poster designed by someone after three days without sleep.

And somehow it works.

The appearances help reinforce the idea that The Electric Mayhem arenโ€™t merely Muppet characters who happen to carry instruments.

Within this universe, theyโ€™re treated like genuine musical legends.

Which they basically are.

๐Ÿฅ ANIMAL REMAINS ANIMAL

Of course, we canโ€™t talk about this programme without returning to the furry red elephant in the room.

Animal remains magnificent.

There are sophisticated television characters.

There are deeply complicated character arcs.

There are carefully constructed explorations of the human condition.

And then thereโ€™s Animal.

DRUMS!

Thatโ€™s it.

Thatโ€™s the philosophy.

And we respect it enormously.

Animal has always been one of the most instantly recognisable Muppets because heโ€™s essentially every drummer stereotype compressed into one screaming ball of hair.

Watching him alongside an entire programme dedicated to The Electric Mayhem feels exactly right.

Give that creature a drum kit and stand well back.

โค๏ธ BUT THEREโ€™S A LOT OF HEART UNDERNEATH THE CHAOS

Like the best Muppet productions, The Muppets Mayhem works because underneath all the ridiculousness thereโ€™s genuine warmth.

The Electric Mayhem arenโ€™t simply musicians.

Theyโ€™re a family.

Theyโ€™ve spent years together.

They understand one another.

They frustrate one another.

They support one another.

And no matter how completely ridiculous things become, the connection between them remains at the centre of the programme.

That gives the show something beyond nostalgia.

You donโ€™t necessarily need decades of Muppet knowledge to understand whatโ€™s happening.

Itโ€™s ultimately a story about a band attempting to accomplish something together.

The fact that one member occasionally communicates primarily through screaming just makes it better.

๐ŸŽธ THE ELECTRIC MAYHEM FINALLY GET THEIR MOMENT

Perhaps the loveliest thing about The Muppets Mayhem is simply seeing these characters finally take centre stage.

For years they were supporting players.

They were the band.

Theyโ€™d appear, play something brilliant, cause some chaos and disappear again.

But here, theyโ€™re the headline act.

Dr. Teeth gets his moment.

Janice gets hers.

Floyd gets his.

Zoot gets his.

Lips gets his.

And Animal gets to hit things.

Everybody wins.

The series gives each member more personality while still keeping the strange chemistry that made The Electric Mayhem so entertaining in the first place.

It doesnโ€™t feel like somebody reinventing them.

It feels like somebody finally saying:

โ€œWhy havenโ€™t we made an entire programme about these lunatics?โ€

Excellent question.

๐Ÿค˜ ROCK โ€™Nโ€™ ROLL WITH FELT, FUR AND ABSOLUTE CHAOS

Thereโ€™s something wonderfully refreshing about The Muppets Mayhem.

Rock music doesnโ€™t always need to involve miserable blokes staring aggressively at the camera from an abandoned warehouse.

Sometimes it can be colourful.

Sometimes it can be ridiculous.

Sometimes your drummer can be a screaming red Muppet.

The Electric Mayhem embody the bit of rock โ€™nโ€™ roll thatโ€™s supposed to be fun.

Turn up.

Plug in.

Make noise.

Hang out with your mates.

Ignore anyone telling you to behave sensibly.

And preferably leave the venue with at least one completely unbelievable story.

Thatโ€™s The Muppets Mayhem.

A love letter to bands.

A celebration of music.

A wonderfully silly bit of television.

And proof that after decades of waiting, Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem absolutely deserved to become the headline act.

Now somebody count Animal in.

ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!

๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿค˜

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies.
