“Hey, don’t write yourself off yet…”
Not a chance, Jim. Not when Jimmy Eat World just pulled off one of the most emotional, uplifting, and heart-thumping sets in Download Festival history. 💔💥

🕰️ THE GOLDEN HOUR – WHEN EMO MET METAL AND STOLE THE SHOW

There’s a magic hour at every festival — that golden sliver of time when the sun dips, the air cools, and the crowd hits the sweet spot between day drinking and night-time madness. At Download Festival 2025, that moment belonged wholly and undeniably to Jimmy Eat World.

Scheduled for 17:30 on the Apex Stage, the Arizona emo legends were sandwiched between a wave of heavy hitters — but instead of being a calm before the storm, they became the storm. A perfect, emotional, beautifully controlled explosion of nostalgia, melody, and raw feeling that had everyone — and we mean everyone — either sobbing, singing, or screaming with joy.

🖤 WHO ARE JIMMY EAT WORLD? (FOR THE METALHEADS WHO PRETEND THEY DON’T KNOW)

Let’s not pretend like Jimmy Eat World haven’t been part of your life. Maybe it was on a breakup playlist. Maybe it was that one sad guitar line that hit you in Year 10. Or maybe you drunkenly screamed The Middle at karaoke last Christmas. Either way — they’re in your musical DNA. 🎼

Since the early 2000s, Jimmy Eat World have walked the tightrope between stadium-sized anthems and bedroom-sized heartbreaks. And while some saw them as emo-lite back in the day, this set at Download 2025? It proved they’ve got the guts, grit, and guitars to hang with the heavyweights.

🎤 THE BAND WALKS ON – AND THE CROWD MELTS

No massive intro. No fireworks. Just four guys, a wall of amps, and “Sweetness” blasting out like a long-lost friend kicking in your front door.

From that first note, Donington turned into a chorus of catharsis. The entire field became a giant emotional blender — part mosh pit, part therapy session.

Jim Adkins, the eternally youthful frontman with that just-woke-up hair and Fender guitar slung low, smiled into the mic and asked:

“How we feelin’, Download?”
And the crowd roared:
“EMOTIONAL!”

🎶 FULL SETLIST – RIFFS, TEARS & GOOSEBUMPS

Jimmy Eat World weren’t here to faff about. This was a tightly packed, meticulously curated set that took us through heartbreak, rage, reflection, and redemption — all in one hour flat. Strap in.

ACT I: NOSTALGIA HITS HARDER THAN A DROP TUNED BREAKDOWN

  1. Sweetness
A wall of sound. The whoa-oh-ohs hit like a wave of glitter-fuelled fireworks. Pits formed. Teens and forty-somethings screamed side by side.
  2. Bleed American
That riff? That riff. Like pop-punk sprinting headfirst into a wall of Marshall amps. The crowd bounced in sync. You could feel the mud shaking.
  3. Big Casino
“I’m the one who gets away…” Yeah, we screamed it. Everyone did. It’s the kind of chorus that makes you feel like you’re in a movie about your own teenage dreams.
  4. If You Don’t, Don’t
The deep cuts are for the faithful. And Download? Full of believers. Arms swayed. Lyrics were mouthed. It was lush, mun.

ACT II: THE EMO EXORCISM BEGINS

  1. Work
A song about struggling to stay afloat — perfect for the moment. “Can we take a ride? Get out of this place while we still have time?” Cue: a thousand hugs and probably three new couples formed.
  2. Damage
Stripped down. Raw. Honest. Jim’s voice cracked in places, and that made it better. This wasn’t a perfect studio version — it was human and hurting.
  3. Hear You Me
Now here’s where the tears started. Phones lit up. People sat on shoulders. And that line — “May angels lead you in…” — echoed over Donington like a prayer. Grown men openly cried. Diolch, lads.

ACT III: FIRE IN THE GUITARS, FIRE IN THE CROWD

  1. Pain
Suddenly we were back in riot mode. The riff tore across the field like a chainsaw through silk. Bodies collided. Beers flew. Pure emo punk rage unleashed.
  2. A Praise Chorus
A celebration disguised as a breakdown. The perfect blend of shouty vocals and soaring leads. It’s like someone bottled teenage hope and dropped it on a distortion pedal.
  3. Always Be
Another underrated gem. Slowed things just enough to catch a breath — but still hit hard enough to keep the vibe electric.

ACT IV: ONE FINAL HEART PUNCH

  1. 23
A ballad. An epic. A gut-punch wrapped in shimmering guitar. It didn’t need pyro. It was the fire. A true emo odyssey — slow burn into full inferno.
  2. The Middle
The closer. The anthem. The song that defines a generation. When the first note rang out, the entire Apex field exploded.

“IT JUST TAKES SOME TIME!”
Every voice joined in. The circle pit was grinning. People were sobbing into each other’s hoodies. Flags waved. Someone crowd-surfed with an inflatable unicorn.

And as the final chords rang out, Jim stepped back, nodded, and whispered:

“You’ve still got it, Download.”

🎸 TECHNICALLY TIGHTER THAN A DRUM HEAD

While the emotion was raw, the performance was razor sharp.

  • Jim Adkins – voice like a blade, guitar like a bomb
  • Tom Linton – rhythm guitar that roared and shimmered in equal measure
  • Rick Burch – cool as ice on bass, the glue that held the chaos together
  • Zach Lind – masterclass on drums. Precise. Passionate. Powerhouse.

It was loud but balanced, full but never muddy. Whoever was on sound desk — proper job, butt. 👏

🥹 CROWD REACTIONS – FROM MOSH TO MISTY-EYED

Let’s be clear: Download loves its metal, but Jimmy Eat World won everyone over.

We saw:

  • A guy in a Slayer shirt mouthing every word to “Damage”
  • Two girls hugging and crying during “Hear You Me”
  • A shirtless bloke screaming “I AM EMO” from the top of someone’s shoulders
  • Crowd surfers during “Pain” who absolutely did not expect to be crying 10 minutes later

🏕️ A SAFE SPACE IN THE STORM

This set wasn’t just a musical performance — it was emotional triage. For an hour, Jimmy Eat World created a safe space in the chaos of Download. A place where feelings weren’t cringe. Where it was OK to scream your pain, or your joy, or both at once.

People found each other in that field. Old mates. New friends. Former lovers. Probably even a few future weddings born during The Middle.

📣 FAN MOMENTS THAT DEFINED THE SET

🧎‍♂️ The Proposal

Right before “Hear You Me,” a couple in the front row got engaged. She said yes. He cried. The crowd chanted “JIMMY’S GONNA PLAY YOUR WEDDING.” (He should.)

🐉 The Emo Dragon

Someone in a giant inflatable dragon costume crowd-surfed during “Bleed American” and got shouted out by the band. Peak Download.

🧻 The Loo Roll Riot

During “Pain,” a group in the middle chucked loo rolls into the air like confetti. Chaotic? Yes. Beautiful? Absolutely.

🧠 RIFF REPORT VERDICT: 3000 WORDS LATER, IT’S STILL NOT ENOUGH

Jimmy Eat World @ Download 2025 was… everything.

Emotionally devastating. Musically perfect. Crowd-unifying. It wasn’t just a gig. It was a shared experience.

It was proof that even among the riffs, the walls of death, and the full-on metal madness, there’s room for melody. For heartbreak. For healing.

For that one moment when 60,000 people scream:

“Everything, everything will be just fine…”
And actually believe it.

🏴 THE RIFF REPORT SCOREBOARD

💀 FINAL THOUGHTS: THIS WAS THE HEART OF FRIDAY

Where Green Day brought the fire and fury later that night, Jimmy Eat World brought the heart. They reminded us that sometimes, the heaviest thing at a festival isn’t the riffs — it’s the feelings.

Would a rock fan yell “YESS MUN!” after this?
Aye. With eyeliner running down their face and a fist in the air.

🔥 THE RIFF REPORT RATING: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 EMO LEGENDS UNITE

Jimmy Eat World didn’t just play Download.
They healed it.
They held it.
And they left us all a little more hopeful than we were before.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
