When a guitar hero leaves us, the amps don’t go quiet — the echoes live on in riffs, records, and the roar of fans shouting their names from the pit. For Bernie Marsden, the blues-rock wizard who helped found Whitesnake and gifted the world riffs heavier than a dragon’s backside, that echo has taken on new life in the form of his final project: Icons.

Released May 9, 2025, this posthumous album is Bernie’s curtain call, a celebration of the legends who inspired him, capped with a spine-tingling take on Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” — first dropped as a single with a lyric video on March 19, 2025.

This isn’t just another covers record. This is Bernie tipping his pint to the greats, saying, “Cheers, lads, thanks for lighting the way.” And, tidy, it’s one hell of a send-off.

🕰️ The Road to Icons

Bernie wasn’t one for sitting still. Right up to his passing in 2023, he was recording, writing, and sharing stories with fans who adored his warm humour as much as his fretboard wizardry. The Kings and Chess projects he worked on just before his death showed his love for blues and heritage, but Icons? That was his passion project.

Think of it as his jukebox of heroes. Bernie handpicked songs that shaped him as a player — Hendrix, Clapton, Peter Green, Free, Cream, and more. Each track is less about imitation and more about interpretation. He wasn’t copying his idols — he was jamming with them in spirit.

🎶 Track by Track Breakdown of Icons

Here’s the full fat, riff-heavy, pint-clinking deep dive into Icons:

1. Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)

The headline act. Bernie takes Hendrix’s psychedelic anthem and reimagines it with a blues-rock backbone. The fuzz is there, but the bite comes from his creamy Les Paul tone. Where Jimi went wild and chaotic, Bernie goes deep and soulful.

Highlights:

  • That solo — pure goosebump fuel.
  • Vocals that feel like a smoky jam session in a back-street Cardiff pub.
  • A respectful nod to Hendrix, but still 100% Marsden.

2. Crossroads (Cream/Eric Clapton)

Bernie’s roots show here. He strips back the flash and digs into the grit. Imagine a roadhouse at 3am with Clapton and Bernie trading licks — proper job.

3. The Stumble (Peter Green)

Marsden was a lifelong Peter Green disciple, and it bleeds through in this instrumental. It’s haunting, melodic, and one of the most emotional cuts on the album.

4. Wishing Well (Free)

Paul Kossoff’s influence runs deep. Bernie doesn’t just cover Wishing Well — he lives it. The riffs are thick, the groove heavy, and the respect unmistakable.

5. Badge (Cream)

This one’s playful. Bernie leans into Clapton’s quirks but adds his own cheeky grin to the delivery. You can almost hear him smirk through the guitar lines.

6. Need Your Love So Bad (Fleetwood Mac/Peter Green)

Emotional, raw, and dripping with feeling. Bernie’s vocals cut right through the heart, a reminder that he wasn’t just a guitarist but a storyteller.

7. Further On Up the Road (Bobby Bland/Eric Clapton)

Here’s Bernie in his element — boogie, shuffle, and pure fun. It’s the track that’ll get festival crowds grooving pint-in-hand.

8. All Right Now (Free)

A bold choice, but Bernie makes it his own. Less radio polish, more grit. It’s Kossoff through Bernie’s lens, and it slaps.

(Tracklist may differ slightly depending on edition, but these are the confirmed “Icons” staples from press and fan chatter.)

⚡ Why Purple Haze Stands Out

Covering Hendrix is like entering a bin jousting championship at Steelhouse Festival — you’d better bring armour, butt, or you’re getting flattened. Most guitarists fall into two traps: either a note-for-note copy (soulless), or an overblown “look at me!” shred-fest (ego city).

Bernie walks the middle line like a master. His Purple Haze is recognisable but reinvented. The iconic riff snarls, but in his hands it’s smoother, bluesier. Hendrix’s psychedelia becomes Bernie’s storytelling.

Fans have said it best online:

“It’s like Hendrix and Peter Green had a pint and Bernie wrote the setlist.”

🍺 Bernie’s Legacy – More Than Just a Whitesnake

Most casuals remember Bernie for Here I Go Again, but the diehards know he was so much more. Songwriter, mentor, festival legend, and all-round lovely bloke. He turned up at fan conventions, played small venues as happily as big ones, and always had time for a yarn.

With Icons, he’s left us something truly special: his heroes through his own lens. It’s not just an album; it’s a love letter.

🎧 Where to Listen & Collect

  • Single: Purple Haze + lyric video – released March 19, 2025
  • Album: Icons – released May 9, 2025
  • Available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, plus lush CD and vinyl editions for the shelf-proud.

🏴 What’s Occurring in the Fan World?

  • Steelhouse campers are already blasting Purple Haze at campsite BBQs.
  • Socials are filling with tributes: “Icons feels like Bernie’s last jam session with us.”
  • Some fans reckon The Stumble is the sleeper track — emotional enough to make a dragon cry.

🕯️ Final Thoughts

Bernie Marsden’s Icons isn’t just another covers record. It’s a farewell pint, a last jam, and a love letter rolled into one. From Purple Haze’s fuzz to Wishing Well’s swagger, it’s Bernie showing us the riffs that made him — and gifting us one last masterclass in the process.

As the man himself once said about playing live:

“It’s about feel. It’s always about feel.”

And Icons? Mun, it’s got feel in spades. Proper job. 🤘

Diolch, Bernie. Your Les Paul still sings. 🎸

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
