Dear Steelhouse Festival… we’ve got one very important request.
The bands are incredible. The beer is flowing. The atmosphere is unbeatable. The mountain views are spectacular. The riffs are louder than ever.
But there’s one thing missing…
An ice cream van.
Picture the scene. The Welsh sun is beating down across Hafod-y-Dafal Farm. Thousands of rock fans are gathered around Steelhouse’s mighty single stage, clutching pints, wearing black band shirts that suddenly feel like winter coats, and wondering whether standing near another blast of pyrotechnics was really the best idea.
Then…
🎵 “Greensleeves” starts playing in the distance.
Heads turn.
People stop mid-conversation.
Someone shouts:
“ICE CREAM VAN!”
Within seconds, half the festival is charging across the mountain like the next band is about to launch into the greatest opening riff ever written.
Imagine grabbing a classic 99 with a Flake while waiting for the next act. Maybe a Magnum during the changeover. A Fab after surviving the walk back up from the campsite. Or a cheeky Mr Whippy loaded with sauce and sprinkles while soaking up those incredible Welsh mountain views.
Now that is festival luxury.
The Mountain’s Coolest Encore
Steelhouse has always had brilliant food vendors, great bars and one of the friendliest atmospheres anywhere on the UK festival circuit.
Because everything centres around one stage, the whole festival crowd moves together. Everyone watches the same bands, shares the same moments and enjoys the same weekend without having to sprint between clashing performances.
That is part of what makes Steelhouse so special.
An ice cream van parked near the arena would fit perfectly into that atmosphere. During the gaps between bands, it could become the busiest place on the mountain.
You can already imagine the conversations:
“Fancy a Cornetto before the next band?”
“I’ll grab the pints — you get the Magnums!”
“Meet you by the ice cream van after this set!”
It would not just be selling ice cream. It would become a festival landmark.
Would It Actually Make It Up the Mountain?
Of course, there is one fairly large challenge…
Getting the ice cream van up the famous Steelhouse mountain road.
Anyone who has driven up to the festival knows it is not exactly a gentle trip to the seaside. The climb requires patience, confidence and probably a few crossed fingers.
But if campervans, catering trucks, production vehicles and thousands of rock fans can conquer the mountain, surely one determined Mr Whippy van can give it a go.
Just imagine the heroic arrival.
The van crawls over the final hill.
The jingle begins.
The crowd erupts.
Forget a surprise guest appearance — this would be the biggest reaction of the weekend.
Ice Cream and Heavy Metal Belong Together
Some people may claim that ice cream is not very rock and roll.
Those people are wrong.
Rock fans enjoy the finer things in life. Loud guitars, cold pints, festival food and a 99 with extra sauce can coexist perfectly.
You could even give the menu a Steelhouse makeover:

There could even be a special Welsh edition with red, white and green sprinkles.

The Riff Report Verdict
Steelhouse Festival already delivers one of the most unique weekends in the British rock calendar.
One stage.
One mountain.
One massive rock-loving community.
Adding an ice cream van would simply make those hot afternoons even better.
So come on, Steelhouse. Let us hear that famous ice cream jingle drifting across the mountain between bands.
Give us cold treats, extra Flakes and enough raspberry sauce to survive the Welsh sunshine.
After all, the festival already has the riffs.
It already has the views.
It already has the atmosphere.
Now it just needs a Mr Whippy.
