Genre: Southern Rock, Hard Rock, Blues-Rock, Groove Metal Vibes
Hometown: Edmonton, Kentucky
Formed: 2001
Lineup:
๐ŸŽค Chris Robertson โ€“ Vocals/Guitar (voice of gravel-soaked gold)
๐ŸŽธ Ben Wells โ€“ Guitar/Stage Jumper-In-Chief
๐Ÿฅ John Fred Young โ€“ Drums/Flailing Drum Demon
๐ŸŽธ Steve Jewell Jr. โ€“ Bass (joined 2021, riffs for days)

Former Member:
๐ŸŽธ Jon Lawhon โ€“ Original bassist (2001โ€“2021) โ€“ a founding groove machine

๐Ÿฃ THE BIRTH OF A SOUTHERN STORM

Picture this: tiny town, backwoods Kentucky, population barely bigger than the queue for the loos at Download. Four teenagers with big dreams and bigger amps form a band in a shed behind the local hardware store. The Robertson, Wells, Lawhon, and Young families are already tighter than a snare drum, and their kids are about to rewrite the rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll rulebook with Black Stone Cherry. ๐ŸคŸ๐ŸŒช๏ธ

These lads werenโ€™t just playing covers in garages โ€“ they were brewing something dirty, soaked in southern swagger and raised on Skynyrd, Sabbath, ZZ Top and Motown. They had riffs in their blood, and grit in their boots. ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

๐Ÿ’ฅ THE DEBUT THAT BLEW THE DAMN DOORS OFF

Enter 2006. The world needed a new riff dealer โ€“ and BSC delivered. Their self-titled debut exploded like a thunderstorm through a chicken coop. ๐Ÿ“โšก
With Lonely Train, Hell and High Water and Rain Wizard, they showed they could riff with the heavies, groove with the best, and still bring that smoky front-porch charm.

From here, it was game on. Sold-out shows, radio airplay, and Kerrang! going absolutely nuts for them. These werenโ€™t boys from the sticks anymore โ€“ they were global rock contenders.

๐ŸŽธ GROWTH, GROOVE & GRIT โ€“ THE ALBUM JOURNEY

1๏ธโƒฃ Black Stone Cherry (2006)

The birth of a band and a punch to the gut. Dirty, southern, loud โ€“ the kind of record you could taste the sweat on.
๐ŸŽง Hell and High Water, Lonely Train

2๏ธโƒฃ Folklore and Superstition (2008)

Heavier storytelling, blues-drenched hooks, and enough swing to make your nan neck a whiskey.
๐ŸŽง Blind Man, Soulcreek, Please Come In

3๏ธโƒฃ Between the Devil & the Deep Blue Sea (2011)

Commercial but crushing. A bit glossier, but with riffs that still slap. This one put โ€˜em in the arena league.
๐ŸŽง White Trash Millionaire, In My Blood, Blame It On the Boom Boom

4๏ธโƒฃ Magic Mountain (2014)

The most chaotic good of their catalogue โ€“ fast, fierce, a bit fuzzy, and all fire.
๐ŸŽง Me and Mary Jane, Fiesta del Fuego

5๏ธโƒฃ Kentucky (2016)

Home turf pride. They went independent, came back stronger, and laid down their most personal record to date.
๐ŸŽง The Rambler, Cheaper to Drink Alone

6๏ธโƒฃ Black to Blues (EP) (2017)

Blues covers with a fuzz pedal twist. Muddy Waters would be grinning.
๐ŸŽง Built for Comfort, Champagne & Reefer

7๏ธโƒฃ Family Tree (2018)

Funky, flirty, full of soul. Groovier than ever but still heavier than your mamโ€™s Sunday roast.
๐ŸŽง Bad Habit, Burninโ€™, Southern Fried Friday Night

8๏ธโƒฃ Black to Blues Vol. 2 (EP) (2019)

Another smokinโ€™ set of covers. Raw, respectful, and rowdy.
๐ŸŽง Big Legged Woman, Me and the Devil Blues

9๏ธโƒฃ The Human Condition (2020)

Dark and reflective. Released mid-pandemic, and it hit like a brick through a barn window.
๐ŸŽง Again, Ringinโ€™ in My Head

๐Ÿ”Ÿ Screaminโ€™ at the Sky (2023)

The rebirth! First album with Steve Jewell Jr. on bass, and itโ€™s a riff-hungry return to form. Massive choruses, bigger confidence.
๐ŸŽง Out of Pocket, Nervous, When the Pain Comes

๐Ÿ”ฅ LIVE = ABSOLUTE CARNAGE

If youโ€™ve ever seen BSC live, you know this already: they donโ€™t just play, they detonate.

  • Ben Wells jumps higher than most Welsh rugby players
  • John Fred is dripping sweat by song two and usually attacking cymbals like they owe him money
  • Chris? That voice is even better live โ€“ gritty, emotional, and thunderous
  • And Steve? Slotted in like heโ€™s been there since day one โ€“ tidy as anything ๐Ÿงผ

Whether itโ€™s a sweaty club, a festival stage, or a mud-drenched tent in the valleys โ€“ Black Stone Cherry bring southern heat like no one else. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿงก THE HEART OF THE BAND

What makes BSC special? Itโ€™s not just the riffs (though theyโ€™re spicy af) โ€“ itโ€™s the sincerity. These lads mean it. Whether theyโ€™re singing about struggles, small-town hope, losing loved ones, or love gone sideways, it always comes from somewhere real.

Theyโ€™re not pretending to be cowboys, they are cowboys โ€“ just with Les Pauls instead of lassos.

Even during lineup changes, industry chaos, and pandemics, BSC stayed grounded. No egos. No bullshit. Just family, fans, and furious southern rock. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ–ค

๐Ÿงจ THE RIFF REPORT ESSENTIAL PLAYLIST

๐ŸŽธ Lonely Train โ€“ The origin story
๐ŸŽธ White Trash Millionaire โ€“ Anthemic and proud
๐ŸŽธ Me and Mary Jane โ€“ That RIFF
๐ŸŽธ Again โ€“ Punchy, emotional, epic
๐ŸŽธ Soulcreek โ€“ Feels like home
๐ŸŽธ Out of Pocket โ€“ Screaminโ€™ BSC 2.0
๐ŸŽธ Peace is Free โ€“ Emotional arm-in-arm magic
๐ŸŽธ Bad Habit โ€“ Filthy in the best way
๐ŸŽธ The Rambler โ€“ Grab a tissue, seriously
๐ŸŽธ Blame It On The Boom Boom โ€“ Ridiculous fun

๐ŸŽค RIFF REPORT VERDICT:

Black Stone Cherry are the sound of the modern South โ€“ loud, proud, sweaty, and full of heart. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ’ฅ Whether you’re necking bourbon in a biker bar or blasting riffs on a Welsh hillside, these lads bring the fire and the feels every single time.

They’ve evolved, adapted, and never sold out. Just real music from real musicians with mud on their boots and magic in their fingers.

Cheers to the Cherry boys โ€“ Diolch for keeping rock dirty, honest, and alive! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿป Want more? Letโ€™s build a BSC BBQ Playlist, Top 20 Deep Cuts, or compare their riffs to chicken wings. You know weโ€™ve got you covered. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŽถ

Michael

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
