Tucked between the steelworks haze of Port Talbot and the crashing waves of the Aberavon seafront stood a building that started life as a leisure centre… but became a temple of live music mayhem. The Afan Lido (or Aberavon Lido if you’re posh or lost) wasn’t just about pool parties and badminton tournaments – it became one of Wales’s most unassuming but utterly iconic gig venues. 🏊♂️➡️🎤
So, grab a pint 🍺, a pasty 🥟, and let’s cannonball straight into the history of the bands that brought noise, sweat and sheer carnage to this legendary Welsh venue…
🏗️ THE BUILDING BLOODY STARTED AS A SWIMMING POOL?!
Yep. Opened in 1965 by the Queen herself (diolch Liz), Afan Lido was meant to be a swanky sports & leisure palace. Indoor pools, squash courts, a sports hall with moveable seating – you get the vibe. But what no one expected was that within a few years, it would be echoing with the sound of Marshall stacks, flying pints, and mosh pits forming on the netball court. 😂
🎸 THE GIGS BEGIN – LATE ’60s TO ’70s
Forget your arenas – the Lido was intimate, LOUD, and local. And the bands that showed up? Absolute legends.
🎸 Rory Gallagher – May 23, 1970
The Irish blues-rock wizard brought his Strat and his soul to Aberavon, lighting the spark for decades of shows to come. Imagine hearing “Bullfrog Blues” bouncing off concrete walls in Port Talbot. Tidy!
🎸 Status Quo – June 15, 1979
The Quo stomped into town with more denim than an entire cattle ranch. Heads were banged, hips were shaken, and probably a few pool floaties were nicked after the encore.
⚡ THE WILD ’80s – HAIRSPRAY, MOSH PITS & MISCHIEF
The ’80s hit, and Lido got heavy. No more Mr. Nice Venue. The line-ups read like the pages of Kerrang! turned up to 11.
🤘 Motörhead – multiple gigs early 80s
Lemmy and the lads brought the Ace of Spades thunder and possibly cracked the swimming pool tiles. If you didn’t leave with hearing loss and a sore neck, were you even there?
🎯 The Jam – 1982
Mod revival in the valleys, butt! Paul Weller strutted onto that humble sports hall stage with a Union Jack guitar and a whole load of attitude. The ska shoes must’ve been worn thin.
🌀 ’90s CHAOS – BRITPOP, RAVES & THE VALLEYS INDIE BOOM
By the ’90s, Aberavon Lido had become the go-to for bands one album away from superstardom or spiralling into beautiful madness.
🌈 Super Furry Animals & Grandaddy – 1998
Furries and freaky synths? Yes mun. The Lido hosted a night of indie psychedelic madness with Welsh icons and cult American oddballs on the same bill. Probably smelt like hash and anticipation.
🌻 The Levellers – also 1998
Crusty folk-punk legends with fiddles and attitude – the Levellers turned the Lido into a field party without the mud.
🧢 Noughties Mayhem – FROM CHAVS TO CHAOS
You thought things were loud in the ’80s? Enter the age of Goldie Lookin Chain, skinny jeans, and eyeliner.
💿 Goldie Lookin Chain – 2005
“Guns Don’t Kill People…” echoed across Aberavon. Tracksuits? Check. Laughs? Check. Total chaos? CHECK. This gig is now the stuff of local legend, and probably caused a minor spike in cider sales.
🩸 Lostprophets, Bring Me the Horizon + More – 2006
Before stadiums came calling, this lot tore it up in the Lido. BMTH were just baby-faced screamers back then – now look at ’em. This was the breeding ground for future Reading/Download headliners. Shame about a few things in retrospect, but the mosh was mighty.
🔥 THE FIRE THAT ENDED AN ERA – ABERAVON LIDO’S FINAL CURTAIN CALL
Just when it felt like the Lido might ride another decade of sweaty gigs and sports hall chaos, fate had other ideas – and it came with flames. 😢
On December 16th, 2009, a devastating fire broke out at the Afan Lido complex. What started as smoke quickly became a full-blown inferno that ripped through the building’s roof and heart – including the concert hall and the actual swimming pool. Yes, really. 🔥🏊♂️
💬 “How does a swimming pool catch fire, butt?”
Great question. We’re still asking it. The pool was full of water, lifeguards, and dreams – but somehow the blaze said, “I’ll burn that anyway.”
Firefighters battled for hours, but the flames danced their way through the structure like it was kindling. Over 100 firefighters were called in, and the skies over Port Talbot filled with smoke, disbelief, and a faint smell of melting Speedos.
The official cause was later pinned to an electrical fault near the sauna and spa area. Bit ironic really – the only room that’s meant to be hot became too hot. No one was seriously hurt, but the damage was so bad the Lido was condemned and permanently closed.
From there, the fate was sealed. The Lido was flattened in 2011, leaving behind ashes, echoes, and the ultimate pub quiz mystery:
“What Welsh swimming pool burnt down despite being full of water?”
Answer: Aberavon Lido. The most rock ‘n’ roll pool in history.

🕯️ A LIDO LEGACY
Aberavon Lido wasn’t just a venue. It was a moment. A memory. A madness. It gave South Wales some of its loudest nights, its biggest bands, and stories that echo louder than any headliner.
So next time you’re strolling down the seafront or scoffing chips from Franco’s, just remember – the walls of that long-gone leisure centre once held Motörhead at full volume.
And that’s something worth shouting about.
