Your Complete Guide to Choosing the Perfect Festival Home 🤘

When people think about festivals, they imagine massive stages, roaring crowds, cold beers and unforgettable performances. What they don’t think about is the place they’ll spend almost half their weekend…

Their tent.

A good tent can turn a brilliant festival into an unforgettable experience.

A bad tent can turn it into three days of sleepless nights, wet clothes, broken poles and questioning every life decision that brought you to a muddy field.

Whether you’re heading to Steelhouse, Bloodstock, Download, or your first local camping festival, this guide will help you choose the perfect tent, look after it properly, and avoid the mistakes thousands of festival-goers make every single summer.

So grab a brew (or a beer), and let’s find your perfect festival home.

🎪 Step 1 – How Big Should Your Tent Be?

Manufacturers have a funny way of measuring tents.

A two-person tent technically fits two people…

…but only if neither of you breathes, moves or owns luggage.

As a rule of thumb:

PeopleRecommended Tent Size
12–3 Person
24 Person
35–6 Person
Family6–8 Person

Remember you’ll also need room for:

  • Sleeping bags
  • Air beds
  • Clothing
  • Walking boots
  • Cooler boxes
  • Festival merch
  • Camping chairs
  • Waterproofs
  • Food
  • Charging equipment

Extra space also makes changing clothes considerably easier.

Nobody wants to attempt putting jeans on while lying diagonally across an air mattress.

🏕 Different Types of Festival Tent

Not every tent suits every festival.

Dome Tent

The classic festival choice.

Advantages

✅ Cheap

✅ Easy to transport

✅ Simple to pitch

✅ Plenty available

Downsides

❌ Limited standing room

❌ Can struggle in strong winds if poorly secured

Perfect for beginners.

Tunnel Tent

Longer with separate living and sleeping areas.

Perfect for couples and longer festivals.

Advantages include:

  • More storage
  • Better headroom
  • Large porch
  • Comfortable living space

Pop-Up Tent

The dream…

…until it’s time to pack it away.

Pros

  • Ready in seconds
  • Great for beginners
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Hard to repack
  • Less durable
  • Usually less weatherproof

Air Tents

Inflatable beams replace poles.

Simply pump them up.

Advantages:

  • Extremely quick
  • Very stable
  • Strong in poor weather
  • Comfortable

Disadvantages:

  • Higher price
  • Slightly heavier

If you attend multiple festivals every year, they’re a fantastic investment.

Bell Tents

Want to camp in luxury?

Bell tents provide:

  • Standing room
  • Huge living space
  • Excellent ventilation
  • Comfort

Ideal for family camping or glamping areas.

🌧 Waterproof Ratings Explained

One of the biggest numbers you’ll see is the Hydrostatic Head (HH) rating.

This tells you how waterproof the fabric is.

Under 1500mm

Suitable only for fair weather.

Avoid for UK festivals.

2000–3000mm

Ideal for most festivals.

Will comfortably handle showers and overnight rain.

4000–5000mm

Excellent protection.

Ideal for mountain festivals like Steelhouse or unpredictable British summers.

5000mm+

Built for serious weather.

If you’re expecting driving rain and strong winds, this is the safest option.

🌬 Wind Resistance

British festivals often become extremely windy.

Always check:

  • Fibreglass or aluminium poles
  • Number of guy ropes
  • Peg quality
  • Pole thickness

Replace the cheap pegs supplied with stronger steel pegs if possible.

It’s a small upgrade that could save your weekend.

🌞 Blackout Bedrooms

One of the greatest inventions in camping.

Benefits include:

  • Cooler during the day
  • Less sunlight
  • Better sleep
  • Easier afternoon naps

Without blackout material you’ll probably wake up around 6am as your tent transforms into a greenhouse.

🌡 Ventilation

Good ventilation keeps condensation under control.

Look for:

  • Mesh windows
  • Roof vents
  • Multiple openings
  • Breathable fabrics

Without ventilation you’ll wake up surrounded by damp walls—even if it hasn’t rained.

🚪 Porch Areas

A porch is worth its weight in gold.

It provides somewhere to leave:

  • Muddy boots
  • Wet waterproofs
  • Camping chairs
  • Cooler boxes
  • Bags

Keeping muddy gear outside your sleeping area makes a huge difference.

🎨 Making Your Tent Easy To Find

Every campsite eventually becomes a sea of identical green tents.

After twelve hours of live music…

they all look exactly the same.

Decorate yours with:

🏴 Welsh flags

🎸 Band flags

🎈 Bright ribbons

💡 Solar fairy lights

🌈 Colourful bunting

🦆 Inflatable ducks (yes, really!)

The more unique your tent looks, the easier it’ll be to find after dark.

💡 Solar Lights

Battery-powered lighting makes life much easier.

Useful options include:

  • Solar fairy lights
  • Rechargeable lanterns
  • Head torches
  • Motion lights

Avoid candles.

Seriously.

🔋 Charging Devices

Modern festivals usually offer charging lockers, but it’s wise to carry your own power.

Take:

  • Power banks
  • USB lanterns
  • Spare charging cables
  • Car charger (if allowed)

Never rely solely on festival charging stations.

🛏 Sleep Comfort

Don’t underestimate your sleeping setup.

Options include:

Sleeping Mat

Lightweight but basic.

Air Bed

Comfortable but can lose air.

Camp Bed

Excellent support.

Sits off the ground.

Ideal for longer festivals.

Pair it with:

  • Warm sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Blanket for colder nights

Even in July, UK nights can become surprisingly chilly.

🥾 Footwear Storage

Always leave muddy boots in the porch.

A cheap plastic storage tray keeps mud from spreading throughout the tent.

Future-you will be grateful.

🐄 Where Should You Pitch?

Avoid:

❌ Bottom of hills

❌ Near toilets

❌ Main walkways

❌ Food stalls

❌ Generator areas

Choose somewhere:

✅ Slightly elevated

✅ Flat

✅ Close enough to facilities

✅ Far enough away from noise

🚽 Toilet Distance

Close sounds convenient…

until queues begin at 2am.

Too far means long walks in the dark.

Aim for somewhere around a three to five-minute walk away.

🍔 Near Food?

Convenient?

Absolutely.

Quiet?

Not remotely.

Expect generators, deliveries and hungry festival-goers from sunrise.

🎵 Quiet Camping vs Party Camping

Think honestly about your weekend.

Do you want:

🎉 Music until dawn?

Or…

😴 Some actual sleep?

Most festivals offer quieter camping areas.

They’re worth considering if you’re there for the bands rather than the campsite parties.

🔒 Keeping Your Gear Safe

Never leave valuables in your tent.

Carry:

  • Phone
  • Wallet
  • Keys
  • Medication
  • Camera equipment

Use festival lockers whenever possible.

Remember—a tent zip offers privacy, not security.

🧹 Leave No Trace

One of the biggest issues after festivals is abandoned camping gear.

Take everything home.

Recycle where possible.

If your tent is still usable, don’t leave it behind.

Respect the farmers, organisers and volunteers who work tirelessly to host these events year after year.

🛠 Festival Tent Repair Kit

Always pack:

  • Gaffer tape
  • Spare pegs
  • Guy ropes
  • Mallet
  • Tent repair patches
  • Zip ties
  • Multi-tool
  • Small sewing kit

A five-minute repair can save your entire weekend.

💷 How Much Should You Spend?

£40–£80

Great for occasional campers.

£100–£200

The sweet spot for most festival-goers.

Excellent value.

£250–£500

High-quality materials.

Ideal for frequent festival visitors.

£500+

Premium tents built to last many years.

⭐ The Riff Report’s Top Tent Buying Tips

Before handing over your hard-earned cash, ask yourself:

✅ Is it waterproof enough for UK weather?

✅ Can I pitch it on my own?

✅ Will it fit my camping gear?

✅ Does it have a blackout bedroom?

✅ Is there enough ventilation?

✅ Can it survive strong winds?

✅ Does it have a porch?

✅ Can I carry it from the car park?

✅ Is it easy to pack away?

If you answer “yes” to all of those, you’re well on your way to finding your perfect festival tent.

🤘 Final Thoughts

Your tent isn’t just somewhere to crash after the headline act—it’s your home, your shelter, your changing room, your meeting point and your sanctuary when the heavens open or your feet need a well-earned rest.

The right tent lets you wake up refreshed, dry and ready to charge back into the arena for another day of riffs, circle pits and unforgettable memories. The wrong one can leave you soaked, sleep-deprived and wondering why you didn’t spend a little extra in the first place.

Buy the best tent you can comfortably afford, practise putting it up before you leave home, and treat it well after the festival by drying it properly before storing it away. A quality tent can last for years and become part of countless adventures.

At The Riff Report, we’ve seen tents survive blazing sunshine, sideways Welsh rain, mountain winds and late-night campsite chaos. The campers who have the best weekends are rarely the ones with the biggest tents—they’re the ones who arrive prepared.

So pitch smart, camp responsibly, look after your neighbours, and most importantly…

Stay dry. Stay safe. Stay loud. We’ll see you down the front. 🤘⛺🍻
