One song. One scene. Absolute emotional carnage, mun. 🎸🌌

If you didn’t feel something when the final seconds of Stranger Things rolled into silence and David Bowie’s towering anthem ‘Heroes’ crept in through the speakers… check your pulse, butt. 🖤

The series finale pulled its final trick straight from the emotional playbook of the gods, dropping Bowie’s Berlin-era masterpiece into the closing credits like a slow-motion gut punch. Result? A massive global streaming surge, timelines flooded with tears, and Bowie once again proving he exists on a different plane to the rest of us.

🎬 THE MOMENT THAT BROKE THE INTERNET (AND OUR HEARTS)

No explosions. No big dialogue dump. Just the screen fading out, the story done, and that unmistakable opening line floating in like a ghost with perfect timing.

“I… I will be king.”

Reader, the hairs on our arms packed their bags and stood to attention.

Within hours of the finale landing, ‘Heroes’ rocketed back up streaming charts worldwide. Spotify playlists ballooned. YouTube views spiked. Vinyl collections were dragged out like sacred relics. Somewhere in Wales, someone definitely whispered “lush” and hit repeat. 🎧

🧠 WHY ‘HEROES’ WAS THE ONLY RIGHT CHOICE

Let’s be real. ‘Heroes’ isn’t just a song. It’s a feeling. A defiant stand in the face of absolute chaos. A brief, burning moment of bravery when the odds are stacked, the walls are closing in, and the world looks knackered.

Which makes it basically the unofficial mission statement of Stranger Things.

Kids on bikes vs cosmic horror. Friendship over fear. Love over oblivion. Hope, even when the Upside Down is chewing the scenery. Slapping Bowie over that ending wasn’t fan service. It was storytelling with taste.

Proper job.

📈 THE BOWIE EFFECT STRIKES AGAIN

This isn’t the first time Bowie’s catalogue has enjoyed a post-screen revival, but this one hits different. This wasn’t nostalgia bait. This was cultural alignment. A modern myth closing its doors with one of the greatest songs ever written echoing behind it.

For younger fans, ‘Heroes’ is now welded to the emotional core of the show. For older heads, it’s a reminder of why Bowie remains untouchable, timeless, and eternally cooler than anyone else in the room.

One song. Nearly 50 years old. Still knocking people sideways.

🖤 STRANGER THINGS MAY BE OVER… BUT BOWIE NEVER IS

The gates to the Upside Down might be shut, but Bowie’s catalogue just reminded the world it doesn’t age, doesn’t fade, and doesn’t politely step aside for trends.

‘Heroes’ is back where it belongs. In heavy rotation. In the charts. In your chest. In that place where great music lives forever.

We can be heroes… just for one day.
Turns out, that day was the Stranger Things finale.

Now excuse us while we stare out of the window dramatically and put it on again.
Only rock ’n’ roll, butt. 🤘🔥

📈 FROM CULT CLASSIC TO STREAMING MONSTER

Before the finale landed on New Year’s Day 2026, “Heroes” was already doing respectable business. Bowie never really leaves rotation, does he? The song was averaging around 94,000 streams per day across major platforms.

Then the final episode aired.

The lights dimmed. The credits rolled. Bowie sang.

And suddenly… chaos.

🚨 THE STREAMING SPIKE

Within three days of the episode airing, “Heroes” pulled in approximately:

  • 342,000 streams on January 1
  • 456,000 streams on January 2
  • 470,000 streams on January 3

That’s roughly 1.27 million streams in just 72 hours. 🧨
A jump of nearly 500% compared to its usual daily numbers.

Not bad for a song released in 1977, eh?

🎬 WHY ‘HEROES’ HIT SO HARD

This wasn’t nostalgia-by-numbers. It was precision emotional warfare.

“Heroes” is a song about defiance. About ordinary people standing tall in impossible moments. About hope that lasts just long enough to matter. Slapping that over the final moments of Stranger Things was like pouring petrol on a bonfire of feelings.

The result?
Millions of viewers reaching for their phones like:
👉 “Right. I need that song in my life again. Now.”

You could practically hear Spotify servers sweating.

🧠 BOWIE: FOREVER THE FINAL BOSS

This isn’t Bowie’s first posthumous chart resurrection, and it won’t be the last. His catalogue has this eerie ability to resurface exactly when the world needs it most. Different generation. Same goosebumps. 🖤⚡

“Heroes” now sits proudly alongside other Stranger Things-boosted revivals, but there’s something extra poetic about this one. No synth-pop gimmicks. No retro winks. Just Bowie, standing centre stage, still soundtracking the end of worlds.

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

This wasn’t just a streaming spike.
It was a reminder.

Great songs don’t age.
They wait.

And when the moment’s right, they kick the door off the charts and shout “WE CAN BE HEROES, JUST FOR ONE DAY” at a brand-new generation.

Tidy work, Netflix. Proper job, Bowie.
Long live the Thin White Duke. 🤘🔥

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
