If you’ve been sitting there patiently waiting for Mötley Crüe to finally announce album number ten, you might want to put the kettle on. Actually, make a flask. You could be waiting a while.
Mötley Crüe bassist and chief songwriter Nikki Sixx has poured a fairly enormous bucket of cold water over hopes that the legendary Los Angeles hellraisers will record another traditional full-length studio album.
And he didn’t exactly leave much room for interpretation.
“Honestly, I know fans don’t want to hear this, but I don’t believe in making full-length records anymore.”
Oof.
There goes the neighbourhood. 💀
According to Sixx, the modern music business simply doesn’t make the traditional album process particularly appealing anymore.
Instead, Mötley Crüe could continue dropping individual songs and shorter releases whenever inspiration strikes.
So Crüe fans shouldn’t necessarily panic that new music is finished.
But another 10-track slab of sleaze, riffs and questionable life decisions?
That suddenly looks considerably less likely.
💿 SAINTS OF LOS ANGELES COULD ACTUALLY BE THE LAST MÖTLEY CRÜE ALBUM
Here’s the slightly bonkers part.
Mötley Crüe’s last proper studio album was Saints of Los Angeles, released all the way back in 2008.
Yep.
2008.
Back when Facebook was still vaguely fun, smartphones hadn’t completely eaten civilisation and festival beer was merely expensive rather than requiring a small mortgage.
Saints of Los Angeles was the Crüe’s ninth studio album and featured the classic line-up of Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars and Tommy Lee.
Nearly two decades later, it may turn out to have been their final full-length record.
That doesn’t mean Mötley Crüe haven’t recorded anything since.
Far from it.
The band reunited in the studio for music connected to The Dirt in 2019, while another major chapter arrived after John 5 replaced Mick Mars on guitar.
And in 2024 we got the three-track Cancelled EP, featuring:
- Dogs of War
- Cancelled
- Fight for Your Right — their take on the Beastie Boys classic.
It was the first Mötley Crüe release to feature John 5 and appeared to suggest that a new creative chapter might be beginning.
But anyone hoping those tracks were merely an appetiser before album number ten might want to lower expectations.
⚡ NIKKI SIXX WANTS “LIGHTNING STRIKES”
Sixx’s argument is essentially about how people consume music now.
Making an album is a bloody enormous undertaking.
To produce ten genuinely strong songs, a band might write 20 or more, demo them, rewrite them, arrange them, record them and then spend months getting everything sounding exactly right.
And after all that?
A huge chunk of listeners might stream one song.
Sixx explained that this change in listening habits has altered the way he thinks about making music.
Radio has changed.
Streaming continues to evolve.
And instead of disappearing into a studio for months to construct another traditional LP, Sixx likes the idea of capturing those moments when inspiration suddenly arrives.
A musical lightning strike.
Something happens.
An emotion hits.
A riff appears.
Sixx calls the lads.
Studio.
BANG.
New Mötley Crüe song.
There is something wonderfully rock ‘n’ roll about that approach, to be fair.
Rather than sitting around saying:
“Right boys, Warner wants 12 tracks by October.”
It’s more:
“I’ve got a riff. Where’s Tommy?”
Probably somewhere involving a drum kit suspended upside down over an arena.

🎸 DOES THE ALBUM REALLY NOT MATTER ANYMORE?
This is where things get interesting.
Because Sixx isn’t entirely wrong.
The way we consume music has changed massively.
Streaming platforms encourage playlists, singles and instant releases. TikTok can turn one track into a worldwide phenomenon while the remaining songs on an album receive a fraction of the attention.
Bands no longer necessarily need the traditional:
Single → album announcement → second single → album → tour
cycle.
They can simply release music whenever they fancy.
For a veteran band like Mötley Crüe, that arguably makes even more sense.
They don’t need a new album to sell concert tickets.
Let’s face it.
When tens of thousands of people pile into an arena to see Mötley Crüe, they’re mostly waiting for:
🎸 Kickstart My Heart
🔥 Dr. Feelgood
😈 Shout at the Devil
🏍️ Girls, Girls, Girls
❤️ Home Sweet Home
Nobody is standing near the front screaming:
“PLAY TRACK SEVEN OFF THE NEW ONE!”
Well…
Someone probably is.
There’s always one.
💿 BUT ROCK FANS STILL BLOODY LOVE ALBUMS
Here’s the other side of it.
For rock and metal fans, the album still matters.
Big time.
We like the artwork.
We like the vinyl.
We like opening the booklet.
We like arguing about the track listing.
We like deciding that track four is criminally underrated.
We like ranking albums even though absolutely nobody asked us to.
And there is something about a full record that allows a band to create a proper snapshot of where they are creatively at that moment.
Mötley Crüe themselves built their legend on albums.
Too Fast for Love.
Shout at the Devil.
Theatre of Pain.
Girls, Girls, Girls.
Dr. Feelgood.
Those aren’t merely collections of songs.
They’re chapters.
Different looks.
Different sounds.
Different levels of hairspray.
Different levels of absolute chaos.
You can look at the album covers alone and practically watch the band’s history unfold.
That’s something a Spotify single simply can’t replicate.
😈 COULD SIXX CHANGE HIS MIND?
This is Mötley Crüe we’re talking about.
Never say never.
Remember when the band literally signed paperwork surrounding their farewell tour?
They played what was billed as their final show on 31 December 2015.
And then…
Well.
They’re touring again.

Rock ‘n’ roll retirement has always been slightly less reliable than a festival weather forecast.
Sixx himself has previously sounded extremely definitive about Mötley Crüe’s future only for circumstances to change later.
So if Nikki wakes up one morning with eight killer riffs bouncing around his skull and John 5 has another six waiting on his phone, nobody should be shocked if somebody suddenly says:
“Fancy making a record?”
That’s the beauty of rock bands.
Plans change.
🔥 THE JOHN 5 ERA STILL HAS PLENTY OF POTENTIAL
One reason some fans will undoubtedly be disappointed by Sixx’s comments is that we haven’t really heard what this version of Mötley Crüe could do across an entire album.
John 5 officially stepped into the touring role previously occupied by Mick Mars and has remained part of the band’s current line-up.
And whatever your feelings about the circumstances surrounding Mars’ departure — a whole other crate of backstage dynamite — John 5 is an absolutely ridiculous guitarist.
Give Sixx, John 5, Tommy Lee and Vince Neil ten new songs and plenty of studio time?
You’d certainly be curious.
Could they make another Dr. Feelgood?
Probably an unfair expectation.
Could they produce a dirty, modern, heavy Mötley Crüe record?
Absolutely worth finding out.
Unfortunately, Sixx currently doesn’t seem interested in finding out through a conventional album.
🎤 NEW CRÜE MUSIC ISN’T DEAD
And this is probably the biggest takeaway.
Nikki Sixx isn’t saying Mötley Crüe will never record another song.
Quite the opposite.
His preferred approach appears to be recording whenever the band genuinely has something worth recording.
Heartbreak?
Write something.
Joy?
Write something.
Rebellion?
Definitely write something.
That could mean singles.
EPs.
Soundtrack songs.
Random surprise releases.
Maybe another three-track blast like Cancelled.
In an odd way, that could actually keep things interesting.
Instead of waiting five years for an album, fans could suddenly wake up one Friday morning and discover:
NEW MÖTLEY CRÜE SINGLE OUT NOW.
No six-month promotional campaign.
No endless teaser videos.
Just riffs.
We’ll take that.
🤘 RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Would we love another full-length Mötley Crüe album?
Of course we bloody would.
There’s something beautifully old-school about putting on a rock album and listening from track one right through to the end — no shuffle, no algorithm deciding what comes next, just a band taking you somewhere for 45 minutes.
And Mötley Crüe are one of those bands whose history is inseparable from the album format.
But Sixx’s argument reflects the uncomfortable reality of modern music consumption.
The world has changed.
Mötley Crüe have changed.
The industry has definitely changed.
Perhaps the next chapter of Crüe isn’t another album.
Perhaps it’s just sporadic explosions of noise whenever Nikki Sixx gets that lightning strike.
And considering this is a band that has survived addiction, arguments, lawsuits, line-up changes, farewell tours, reunions and enough backstage insanity to fill several Netflix series…
We’re certainly not declaring the Mötley Crüe album dead just yet.
Because if rock history has taught us anything, it’s this:
Never trust the word “never” when Mötley Crüe are involved.
