The Weekend Download Festival Was Born
Before the giant stages, before the legendary headline sets, before the endless debates about the weather, the campsites and who delivered the greatest Download performance of all time, there was one historic weekend that changed the UK rock and metal scene forever.
On 31st May and 1st June 2003, thousands of rock fans descended upon Donington Park for the very first Download Festival, unknowingly becoming part of music history.
Twenty-three years later, Download has grown into one of the most famous rock festivals on the planet, but that first event remains something truly special.
For many fans, it wasn’t just another festival.
It was the rebirth of Donington.
🎸 The End Of Monsters Of Rock… And The Beginning Of Something New
For decades, Donington Park was synonymous with the legendary Monsters of Rock Festival.
From AC/DC and Iron Maiden to Metallica and Aerosmith, the site hosted some of the greatest names in rock history throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
When Monsters of Rock disappeared after 1996, many feared the iconic venue’s days as the home of British rock festivals were over.
Thankfully, they couldn’t have been more wrong.
In 2003, Download Festival arrived and immediately proved that Donington still belonged to the rock and metal community.
And what a way to start.
💷 Tickets Were Just £82.50!
One of the things that makes older festival posters and ticket stubs so fascinating is seeing how much things used to cost.
A full weekend camping ticket for Download 2003 cost just £82.50.
That works out at roughly £155 in today’s money, which still feels like an absolute bargain compared to modern festival prices.
Even better, every ticket came with something incredibly futuristic for the time.
A download code.
Fans could redeem tracks from artists performing at the festival, giving Download its name and embracing the emerging digital music era years before streaming became the norm.
In 2003, that felt incredibly cutting-edge.
🔥 Iron Maiden Lead The Charge
If there was one band capable of launching Download Festival into the history books, it was Iron Maiden.
The East London metal legends headlined the first night and delivered exactly what fans expected.
Huge singalongs.
Massive stage production.
Classic songs.
Eddie.
Everything a Donington crowd could ever want.
Many attendees still rank Maiden’s performance among the greatest headline sets in Download history.
🎤 Audioslave Save The Day
The second headline slot originally belonged to Limp Bizkit.
However, the band pulled out before the festival, leaving organisers scrambling for a replacement.
Enter Audioslave.
Featuring former members of Rage Against The Machine alongside the late and great Chris Cornell, Audioslave were one of the hottest bands in rock at the time.
Their appearance helped give the brand-new festival instant credibility and provided a fitting climax to Download’s debut weekend.
⚡ Metallica’s Legendary Secret Set
Ask anyone who attended Download 2003 about their favourite memory and there’s a good chance Metallica will come up.
The metal giants surprised fans with a secret appearance on The Scuzz Stage just days before releasing their controversial new album St. Anger.
Word spread around the site at lightning speed.
Within minutes, fans were sprinting across the festival grounds trying to squeeze into the tent.
What followed became one of the most famous secret performances in Download history.
The thought of seeing Metallica in such an intimate setting now feels almost impossible.
Back then, it actually happened.
🖤 Keith Flint Brings Chaos To The Main Stage
One of the most fascinating moments from Download 2003 came courtesy of Keith Flint.
While most people knew him as the wild-haired frontman of The Prodigy, Flint arrived at Donington with his short-lived rock project simply called Flint.
Photos from the event show Keith commanding the main stage with his trademark energy and intensity.
The project may not have lasted long, but seeing one of Britain’s most iconic performers embracing rock and metal at Download remains a memorable part of the festival’s history.
Looking back now, it feels like a unique snapshot of a different era.
🌟 Future Superstars Everywhere
The first Download line-up was packed with artists who would go on to become huge names over the following years.

- Apocalyptica

And then there was a little band called…
Evanescence.
🦇 Evanescence’s First Ever UK Performance
It’s hard to imagine now, but Download 2003 marked Evanescence’s debut UK performance.
Amy Lee and company were riding a wave of momentum thanks to the success of Bring Me To Life.
Few people watching that set could have predicted just how enormous the band would become.
Today, Evanescence are Download veterans and festival favourites.
Back then, they were introducing themselves to a UK audience for the very first time.
☀️ Before The Legacy Existed
Perhaps the most incredible thing about Download 2003 is that nobody knew what it would become.
There was no legendary history.
No famous campsites.
No Download Dog.
No endless social media debates.
Just thousands of fans taking a chance on a brand-new festival carrying the torch for Donington’s rock heritage.
Those fans helped build what Download would eventually become.
Every headline set, every muddy field, every unforgettable moment since can be traced back to that first weekend in 2003.
