31 December 2025. 6:00am.

No fireworks. No stadium-sized farewell concert. No VJ dramatically smashing a television with a guitar.

Just one final music videoโ€ฆ and then MTV Music UK was gone.

After decades of music television being part of the furniture of British pop culture, MTVโ€™s dedicated UK music channels reached the end of the road on New Yearโ€™s Eve 2025.

And MTV Music chose possibly the most perfect โ€” and painfully ironic โ€” song imaginable to bring the curtain down.

The Buggles โ€“ โ€œVideo Killed the Radio Star.โ€

Yep.

That song.

The very music video that launched MTV in America back in 1981 was brought back to effectively close the circle more than four decades later.

You couldnโ€™t script it better, mun. ๐Ÿ“บ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿ•• 6:00am โ€” And Then There Was Silence

The final hours of MTV Music werenโ€™t business as usual.

Its last-day schedule became one enormous farewell party, looking back across the songs and videos that had filled the channel.

The schedule included MTVโ€™s Best Of The Century, The 50 Biggest Singles Of 2025, MTV Musicโ€™s 100 Most-Played Videos, before the channel entered its final goodbye programming late that night and again during the early hours.

Then came 6:00am on Wednesday, 31 December.

Game over.

MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s and Club MTV ceased broadcasting in the UK and Ireland at around 6am, alongside MTV Live.

And whoever was responsible for choosing the last songs clearly understood the assignment.

๐ŸŽถ MTV Musicโ€™s Last-Ever Video

The honour went to:

The Buggles โ€“ โ€œVideo Killed the Radio Starโ€

Of course it bloody did.

The song had famously been the first music video broadcast when the original American MTV launched on 1 August 1981.

More than 44 years later, it became MTV Music UKโ€™s final video.

Talk about bringing things full circle.

The channelโ€™s farewell message thanked viewers for watching and celebrated the hits and videos that had appeared across MTV Music over the years.

Then came The Buggles.

And that was that.

๐Ÿ“บ Video killed the radio star.

๐ŸŒ The internet killed the music television star.

Thereโ€™s probably a concept album in there somewhere.

๐Ÿ’” MTV 80s Had One Last Electric Dream

MTV Music wasnโ€™t disappearing alone.

MTV 80s also reached the end of its broadcasting life that morning after a final two-hour celebration of the decade that gave us enormous hair, enormous guitar solos, enormous shoulder pads and enough synthesisers to power Swansea.

Its final song?

Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder โ€“ โ€œTogether in Electric Dreamsโ€

Oh, come on.

Thatโ€™s emotional warfare.

The channel used its final hours as a celebration of iconic โ€™80s music and videos before thanking viewers for watching.

If youโ€™re going to pull the plug on an โ€™80s channel, finishing with Together in Electric Dreams is about as beautifully bittersweet as it gets.

๐Ÿ‘‹ MTV 90s Simply Said โ€œGoodbyeโ€

Then there was MTV 90s.

Its final choice required absolutely no explanation whatsoever.

Spice Girls โ€“ โ€œGoodbyeโ€

Subtle?

Nope.

Effective?

Absolutely.

For anyone who grew up during the โ€™90s, MTV was part of a completely different way of discovering music.

There was no algorithm quietly deciding what youโ€™d probably enjoy next.

You watched.

You waited.

And sometimes something completely unexpected appeared.

Maybe it became your new favourite song.

Maybe you hated it.

Maybe you spent the entire video waiting for the little graphic to appear so you could finally find out what the bloody band was called.

That randomness was half the magic.

๐Ÿชฉ Club MTV Refused to Stop the Music

Club MTV also picked a brilliantly appropriate final track:

Rihanna โ€“ โ€œDonโ€™t Stop the Musicโ€

Againโ€ฆ

Whoever programmed these final songs deserves a pint.

Rather than ending with something miserable, Club MTV basically left the dancefloor shouting:

KEEP GOING!

And in a strange way, thatโ€™s exactly what happened.

The channels disappeared.

The music didnโ€™t.

๐ŸŽต The Final Songs

The final UK music-channel selections were:

  • MTV Music: The Buggles โ€“ Video Killed the Radio Star
  • MTV 80s: Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder โ€“ Together in Electric Dreams
  • MTV 90s: Spice Girls โ€“ Goodbye
  • Club MTV: Rihanna โ€“ Donโ€™t Stop the Music
  • MTV Live: Robyn โ€“ Dancing on My Own

Whatever channel you were watching, though, the message was the same.

The dedicated MTV music-channel era in Britain was finished.

๐Ÿ“บ MTV Didnโ€™t Completely Disappear

Thereโ€™s an important distinction here.

MTV itself didnโ€™t shut down completely in Britain.

The main MTV channel remained.

What disappeared were the dedicated linear music channels โ€” MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live.

The surviving flagship MTV service had long since become far more focused on entertainment and reality programming rather than the wall-to-wall music videos that originally made those three letters synonymous with music television.

And thatโ€™s why 31 December 2025 still felt significant.

It wasnโ€™t necessarily the death of the MTV brand.

It was the death of a particular way of experiencing music.

๐ŸŽธ When Music Television Actually Meant Music

For younger readers, explaining the importance of music television is surprisingly difficult.

Imagine a world without instantly searching for virtually any song you fancy.

No endless personalised playlists.

No immediately opening an artistโ€™s entire back catalogue.

No scrolling through fifteen-second clips until your attention span packs its bags and moves to Benidorm.

You turned on the television.

And somebody else chose what happened next.

Sounds terrifying now, doesnโ€™t it? ๐Ÿ˜‚

But it was brilliant.

Music television could throw something at you that youโ€™d never intentionally search for.

Rock.

Metal.

Hip-hop.

Dance.

Pop.

Alternative.

Indie.

Absolute nonsense.

Then suddenlyโ€ฆ

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!

And youโ€™ve discovered your new favourite band.

๐Ÿค˜ MTV and Rock Were Once Joined at the Hip

For rock and metal fans especially, MTV occupies an enormous place in music history.

Videos werenโ€™t just advertisements for songs.

They became events.

Bands could build entire identities through them.

The visual spectacle became part of rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll itself.

And then there was Headbangers Ball.

For generations of metal fans, programmes like that werenโ€™t simply television shows.

They were gateways.

You could discover bands, see interviews, watch videos and get dragged further into the wonderfully ridiculous world of heavy music.

Before social media allowed every band on Earth to communicate directly with fans, television exposure could be absolutely enormous.

MTV could take an artist and suddenly put them in front of millions.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Britain Got Its Own MTV

MTV Europe launched in 1987, with the UK eventually receiving its own dedicated MTV service in 1997.

From there, MTV became deeply embedded in British youth culture.

And it wasnโ€™t alone.

Over the years we had an entire ecosystem of music television.

Kerrang!

The Box.

Kiss.

Q.

Scuzz.

MTV2.

VH1.

4Music.

You could lose an entire Saturday flicking between music channels.

Then, slowly, they started disappearing.

In 2024, another major chunk of British music television vanished when channels including Kerrang!, The Box and Kiss closed.

Then came MTVโ€™s dedicated music services at the end of 2025.

One by one, the old music-TV universe faded away.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Soโ€ฆ What Killed MTV Music?

The obvious answer is sitting in your pocket.

The way we consume music has completely changed.

Why wait half an hour hoping your favourite video appears when you can search for it immediately?

Why watch someone elseโ€™s playlist when an app can generate one specifically for you?

Why wait for music news when youโ€™ve already seen the announcement on social media ten seconds after the band posted it?

Streaming fundamentally changed the relationship between television and music.

Dedicated linear music channels struggled as audiences moved towards on-demand services, video platforms and social media.

Convenience won.

It nearly always does.

But convenience isnโ€™t necessarily the same thing as magic.

๐Ÿ˜ข We Lost Something With the Randomness

This is the bit that gets us.

Algorithms are incredibly good at giving us things weโ€™re likely to enjoy.

But sometimes music discovery shouldnโ€™t be comfortable.

Sometimes you need something completely unexpected thrown at your face.

Something weird.

Something loud.

Something from a genre youโ€™d normally never touch.

Music television did that naturally.

You might switch on for Green Day and accidentally discover Slipknot.

You might wait for Metallica and stumble across The Prodigy.

You might leave the telly running while making a cuppa and return wondering why some bloke wearing leather trousers is screaming from the top of a mountain.

Discovery happened by accident.

And those accidents could change your musical life.

๐ŸŽฌ The Music Video Isnโ€™t Dead

Thankfully, the closure of MTVโ€™s dedicated music channels doesnโ€™t mean the death of music videos.

Far from it.

Bands still spend huge amounts of creativity, effort and money making them.

Videos still introduce songs, build an artistโ€™s visual identity and occasionally become cultural events.

The difference is where we watch them.

The music video escaped television.

Now it lives online.

The format survived.

The delivery system changed.

And maybe thatโ€™s the strangest part of MTVโ€™s story.

MTV helped turn the music video into one of the defining art forms of modern popular culture.

Then technology eventually made the television channel itself unnecessary.

๐Ÿ”„ โ€œVideo Killed the Radio Starโ€

Which brings us back to that final song.

Of all the thousands upon thousands of videos that could have closed MTV Music UKโ€ฆ

The Buggles were perfect.

In 1981, Video Killed the Radio Star represented a new era.

Music wasnโ€™t simply something you heard anymore.

You watched it.

Forty-four years later, the same video returned as another era ended.

Except this time the revolution wasnโ€™t television replacing radio.

It was on-demand digital media replacing scheduled television.

The first video became the last.

Thatโ€™s not just clever scheduling.

Thatโ€™s music history completing a bloody great circle.

๐Ÿ“บ 31 December 2025 โ€” 6:00am

For millions of people, nothing particularly dramatic happened at six oโ€™clock that morning.

They were asleep.

Getting ready for work.

Recovering from the Christmas cheese board.

Preparing for New Yearโ€™s Eve.

But somewhere inside Britainโ€™s broadcasting infrastructure, a collection of channels that represented decades of music culture reached the end.

The final videos played.

The goodbye messages appeared.

The feeds disappeared.

And MTV Music UK became history.

No encore.

No surprise reunion.

Just silence.

But somewhere, inevitably, somebody opened a video online and pressed play.

Because MTV Music may have goneโ€ฆ

but weโ€™re never going to stop watching music.

And if you were there for the days of waiting three bloody hours for your favourite video to come back around?

Raise a glass. ๐Ÿบ

We had it good, butt.

๐Ÿค˜ The Riff Report Wants Your MTV Memories!

Were you watching when MTV Music signed off?

Did you grow up glued to MTV, MTV2, VH1, Kerrang!, Scuzz or The Box?

What music video stopped you dead the first time you saw it?

And โ€” the big one โ€” should proper music television make a comeback?

Get involved and tell us your memories.

Because channels disappearโ€ฆ

but the riffs donโ€™t. ๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud.
