Mötley Crüe with Neil Strauss (2001) – Book Review

Authors: Mötley Crüe with Neil Strauss
Published: 2001
Genre: Autobiography / Hard Rock / Heavy Metal / Music Memoir
Riff Report Rating: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 5/5

There are rock autobiographies that tell you what happened backstage.

Then there’s The Dirt, which kicks the backstage door off its hinges, empties the minibar, destroys the dressing room, makes several catastrophically poor decisions and somehow wakes up three cities away wondering where its trousers went.

Welcome to Mötley bloody Crüe. 🤘🔥

Published in 2001, The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band tells the story of Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, Vince Neil and Mick Mars, with journalist Neil Strauss helping assemble four wildly different perspectives into one enormous, filthy, frequently horrifying account of rock ’n’ roll excess.

And when we say excess…

We mean EXCESS.

Drugs. Booze. Sex. Fame. Death. Arguments. Arrests. Addiction. Car crashes. Broken relationships. Band implosions. Comebacks. Hotel destruction. Stadiums. Strip clubs. Rehab.

Basically, if someone had told these lads to calm down, they apparently interpreted it as a personal challenge.

But underneath all that chaos is a surprisingly dark story about four damaged people who somehow created one of the biggest rock bands of the 1980s.

Strap yourselves in, Riffers.

This one’s absolutely filthy. 😈

💄 WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD

Before Mötley Crüe became arena-filling rock stars, they were four musicians trying to survive Los Angeles.

And early-’80s LA was the perfect environment for them.

The Sunset Strip was exploding.

Bands were everywhere.

Flyers covered walls.

Clubs were packed.

Hair was getting bigger.

Leather trousers were getting tighter.

And hairspray manufacturers were presumably buying yachts.

Into this madness came Mötley Crüe.

Nikki Sixx had the vision.

Tommy Lee had the drums and seemingly enough energy to power California.

Vince Neil had the voice and frontman swagger.

And Mick Mars brought the guitar riffs and the slightly terrifying appearance of a bloke who’d been dug out of an ancient crypt five minutes before soundcheck.

Together?

Magic.

Dangerous, dysfunctional magic.

🎸 FOUR BAND MEMBERS. FOUR DIFFERENT STORIES.

One of the cleverest things about The Dirt is its structure.

This isn’t simply Nikki Sixx telling the history of Mötley Crüe.

Nor is it a sanitised authorised biography where everyone conveniently remembers events the same way.

They absolutely do not.

The members tell stories from their own perspectives, frequently contradicting one another.

Someone remembers an incident one way.

Someone else basically says:

“Nah. That’s bollocks.”

And that’s brilliant.

Because that’s how memories actually work.

Especially memories involving events from decades earlier where the participants weren’t exactly surviving on mineral water and eight hours of sleep.

The conflicting accounts make The Dirt feel chaotic.

But Mötley Crüe were chaotic.

It fits perfectly.

🔥 TOO FAST FOR LOVE

Mötley Crüe’s rise was astonishing.

Their debut album Too Fast for Love arrived in 1981 and captured the rawness of a band still climbing out of the clubs.

Then came Shout at the Devil in 1983.

And suddenly things became enormous.

The image.

The pentagrams.

The leather.

The fire.

The make-up.

The songs.

Mötley Crüe looked dangerous.

Parents hated them.

Teenagers therefore immediately needed their records.

Rock ’n’ roll economics at its finest. 😂

The band had found its identity.

Unfortunately, they’d also discovered that fame provided practically unlimited opportunities to behave like absolute lunatics.

😈 THE SUNSET STRIP BECOMES THEIR PLAYGROUND

This is where The Dirt earns its reputation.

The stories become increasingly outrageous.

Mötley Crüe weren’t simply participating in the Sunset Strip scene.

For a period, they practically were the Sunset Strip scene.

Their lifestyle became inseparable from the band’s mythology.

There are tales involving groupies, drugs, alcohol, trashed hotel rooms and behaviour so ridiculous that occasionally you need to put the book down and remind yourself:

These people somehow survived long enough to write this.

But reading The Dirt decades later creates an interesting tension.

Some stories are hilarious.

Others have aged very differently.

There are moments involving women, substances and destructive behaviour that aren’t remotely glamorous when viewed without the rose-tinted mythology surrounding ’80s rock excess.

And that’s actually one of the reasons the book remains fascinating.

It doesn’t just show the party.

It shows the consequences.

🚗 THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

One of the darkest moments in Mötley Crüe’s history came in December 1984.

Vince Neil had been drinking with Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley, drummer with Hanoi Rocks.

The pair went out in Neil’s car.

There was a crash.

Razzle was killed.

Two people travelling in another vehicle were seriously injured.

Suddenly the ridiculous rock ’n’ roll circus wasn’t funny anymore.

Someone was dead.

The Dirt doesn’t have the luxury of treating Mötley Crüe’s excess as harmless entertainment because eventually that lifestyle produced devastating real-world consequences.

The tragedy remains one of the darkest chapters in the band’s history.

And rightly so.

💉 NIKKI SIXX DIES… AND COMES BACK

Then there’s Nikki Sixx.

Good grief.

Sixx’s heroin addiction became increasingly severe as Mötley Crüe’s success grew.

Eventually, in December 1987, he overdosed.

He was declared dead before being revived.

Think about that.

Mötley Crüe’s bassist had effectively pushed his addiction to the point where his body stopped.

For many people, that would represent the ultimate wake-up call.

With Nikki Sixx, even dying didn’t immediately end the madness.

The incident later inspired “Kickstart My Heart”, one of Mötley Crüe’s biggest and most enduring songs.

It’s a fantastic track.

But knowing the reality behind it makes the song hit differently.

This wasn’t some invented rock ’n’ roll fantasy.

The bloke genuinely nearly didn’t make it.

🥁 TOMMY LEE: HUMAN FIREWORK

If Nikki Sixx often feels like the dark architect of Mötley Crüe, Tommy Lee comes across as its permanently exploding firework.

Tommy is chaos.

Pure chaos.

He’s enthusiastic about practically everything.

Drums.

Partying.

Women.

Cars.

Motorcycles.

Doing something incredibly dangerous because somebody suggested it might be fun.

The man seemingly possessed two settings:

OFF

and

LET’S SEE WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DO THIS.

His sections provide some of the book’s funniest moments, but there’s darkness here too.

Relationships deteriorate.

Fame becomes suffocating.

Bad decisions accumulate.

The endless party eventually develops one hell of a hangover.

🎤 VINCE NEIL: FRONTMAN CHAOS

Vince Neil’s story is equally complicated.

As Mötley Crüe’s singer, he became one of the defining faces of the glam-metal era.

Blond hair.

Leather.

Sports cars.

Parties.

Stadium stages.

He looked like somebody had asked 1985 to design a rock star.

But Vince’s chapters also contain enormous tragedy.

Beyond the Razzle crash, Neil endured the devastating loss of his young daughter Skylar, who died from cancer in 1995.

It’s impossible to read those sections with the same grin you’ve probably had during some of the earlier madness.

The tone changes completely.

Suddenly you’re not reading about some cartoon Sunset Strip frontman.

You’re reading about a father experiencing unimaginable grief.

Those moments give The Dirt considerably more emotional depth than its notorious reputation might suggest.

🎸 MICK MARS: THE QUIET WEAPON

Then there’s Mick Mars.

And honestly?

Mick might be one of the most fascinating people in the entire book.

While everyone else appears to be running around Los Angeles setting fire to their lives, Mick often feels like the exhausted adult who accidentally became trapped in a travelling circus.

His dry humour is magnificent.

But his story is also painful.

Mars has lived with ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory condition that caused him enormous physical difficulties.

Yet night after night, he played.

And those riffs became essential to Mötley Crüe.

“Live Wire.”

“Looks That Kill.”

“Dr. Feelgood.”

“Kickstart My Heart.”

“Girls, Girls, Girls.”

Take Mick Mars out of the equation and Mötley Crüe simply doesn’t sound like Mötley Crüe.

The bloke is an absolute riff machine. 🎸🔥

💰 WHEN THE BAND BECAME MASSIVE

By the second half of the 1980s, Mötley Crüe were enormous.

Theatre of Pain.

Girls, Girls, Girls.

And then…

💉 DR. FEELGOOD

Released in 1989, Dr. Feelgood became the band’s commercial peak.

The irony?

They had finally cleaned themselves up.

After years of trying to record while completely wrecked, sobriety helped Mötley Crüe produce arguably their strongest album.

Apparently remembering what happened in the studio can be useful.

Who knew? 😂

Songs like “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart,” “Same Ol’ Situation” and “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)” became enormous.

The Crüe were now genuine arena-rock royalty.

Surely nothing could go wrong.

Oh, come on.

You’ve been paying attention.

💥 VINCE LEAVES MÖTLEY CRÜE

The 1990s arrived.

Grunge exploded.

The musical landscape changed dramatically.

And Mötley Crüe began falling apart internally.

Vince Neil left the band in 1992 amid disagreements over the band’s direction.

In came John Corabi.

And here’s where The Dirt becomes particularly interesting for music fans.

The self-titled Mötley Crüe album released in 1994 sounds significantly different from the band’s classic work.

Heavier.

Darker.

More contemporary.

Some fans love it.

Others treat it like somebody replaced their Jack Daniel’s with herbal tea.

Commercially, though, it couldn’t reproduce the band’s ’80s success.

Eventually Vince returned.

Because with Mötley Crüe, nobody ever really leaves without the possibility of another chapter.

💔 THE PARTY HAS A PRICE

This is the part that makes The Dirt more than just a collection of outrageous anecdotes.

Eventually, everything costs something.

Addiction costs something.

Fame costs something.

Constant touring costs something.

Treating people badly costs something.

Living as though tomorrow doesn’t exist becomes a problem when tomorrow keeps arriving.

Marriages collapse.

Friendships fracture.

People die.

Children suffer.

Band members stop trusting one another.

Money creates new arguments instead of solving old ones.

That’s the real story of The Dirt.

The outrageous behaviour gets the headlines.

The consequences make the book worth reading.

📖 NEIL STRAUSS DESERVES CREDIT

Turning decades of Mötley Crüe chaos into something readable couldn’t have been easy.

Imagine receiving four people’s memories of the same drug-fuelled night in 1987 and attempting to establish a coherent timeline.

Good luck, butt. 😂

But Neil Strauss helps organise everything without making it feel too polished.

That’s important.

The Dirt shouldn’t read like a corporate band biography.

It needs to feel dangerous.

Messy.

Contradictory.

Occasionally unreliable.

The rotating perspectives allow each member’s personality to emerge clearly.

By the end, you don’t necessarily know exactly what happened every single time.

But you absolutely understand the people involved.

🎬 THE NETFLIX FILM

Many people discovered the story through the 2019 Netflix adaptation of The Dirt.

The film introduced Mötley Crüe’s madness to a new generation and naturally compresses decades of history into something considerably more streamlined.

But if you’ve only watched the film?

Read the book.

Seriously.

There’s vastly more here.

More context.

More darkness.

More ridiculousness.

More contradiction.

More insight into how these four personalities somehow functioned together.

The film gives you the highlights.

The book gives you the scars.

⚠️ HAS THE DIRT AGED WELL?

Now here’s the tricky bit.

Yes and no.

As a music autobiography?

Absolutely.

As an historical document of the Sunset Strip era?

It’s essential.

But some of the behaviour described within these pages is deeply troubling.

There are attitudes and incidents that shouldn’t simply be dismissed with:

“Well, it was rock ’n’ roll.”

That’s bollocks.

And interestingly, the book becomes more powerful when you stop trying to romanticise everything.

Mötley Crüe’s story is simultaneously thrilling and horrifying.

Sometimes within the same paragraph.

You can admire the music without pretending every action deserves applause.

And you can laugh at the ridiculous stories while recognising when the joke stopped being funny.

That complexity is exactly why The Dirt remains such a compelling read.

🤘 WHY THE BOOK STILL MATTERS

Because this might be the definitive document of rock excess eating itself alive.

Mötley Crüe achieved the dream.

They formed a band.

They escaped obscurity.

They made hit records.

They toured the world.

They became rich.

They became famous.

They got practically everything young musicians dream about.

And then they discovered none of those things automatically make you happy.

That’s the story underneath the hairspray.

Underneath the Jack Daniel’s.

Underneath the leather trousers.

Underneath the mountains of drugs.

Four blokes created something massive together while repeatedly coming dangerously close to destroying themselves and each other.

It’s difficult to stop reading.

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band is one of the greatest rock autobiographies ever published.

Not because Mötley Crüe behaved outrageously.

Plenty of bands did.

It’s great because the book doesn’t completely hide what that behaviour eventually became.

The fun turns into addiction.

The partying turns into dependency.

The recklessness produces tragedy.

The friendships become toxic.

The money causes arguments.

And behind the giant stage shows are four deeply flawed human beings desperately trying to keep an increasingly enormous machine running.

It’s hilarious.

It’s disgusting.

It’s heartbreaking.

It’s shocking.

It’s frequently unbelievable.

And occasionally you’ll find yourself staring at the page thinking:

“THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THAT HAPPENED.”

Then you remember you’re reading about Mötley Crüe.

And suddenly it seems entirely possible.

⭐ RIFF REPORT RATING: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 – 5/5

Essential reading for rock fans — but don’t mistake the madness for a lifestyle guide.

The Dirt isn’t really a celebration of excess.

Read properly, it’s almost a warning about it.

The music was enormous.

The personalities were bigger.

The consequences were bigger still.

And somehow, against seemingly every law of probability…

Mötley Crüe survived.

Well, bloody hell.

Pass the hairspray. 🤘🔥

💬 OVER TO YOU, RIFFERS!

Have you read The Dirt?

Did you read the book before watching the Netflix film — and which version tells the Crüe story best?

And while we’re starting arguments…

What’s the greatest Mötley Crüe album ever made?

Get stuck into the comments, mun. 😈🤘

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. 🐉🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
