Henry Rollins (1994) – Book Review

Author: Henry Rollins
Published: 1994
Genre: Memoir / Hardcore Punk / Tour Diaries / Music History
Riff Report Rating: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 5/5

Forget private jets.

Forget five-star hotels.

Forget backstage champagne.

Forget the glamorous fantasy of rock ’n’ roll touring entirely.

Get in the bloody van.

Henry Rollins’ Get in the Van: On the Road with Black Flag is one of the rawest, angriest and most exhausting books ever written about life in a touring band.

This isn’t the story of musicians becoming rich.

It’s the story of musicians trying to find somewhere to sleep.

It’s petrol money.

Cheap food.

Hostile audiences.

Violence.

Police.

Promoters.

Endless driving.

Band tension.

Physical exhaustion.

Mental exhaustion.

And then doing the whole thing again tomorrow.

Published in 1994 and built heavily around Rollins’ journals from his years fronting Black Flag, Get in the Van doesn’t simply describe the American hardcore underground.

It drops you straight into the middle of it.

By page 50, you’ll practically smell the van.

By page 100, you’ll want a shower.

By the end?

You’ll understand why touring Black Flag wasn’t a career.

It was bloody survival. 🚐🔥🤘

🏴 BLACK FLAG BEFORE HENRY

Before Henry Rollins entered the picture, Black Flag were already one of America’s most important underground punk bands.

Formed in Hermosa Beach, California, in the late 1970s, the band centred around guitarist and songwriter Greg Ginn.

And Black Flag weren’t exactly interested in making life easy for themselves.

Their music was aggressive.

Confrontational.

Stripped down.

Uncomfortable.

Their famous four-bar logo became one of the most recognisable symbols in punk history.

And their DIY approach would become enormously influential.

This was before musicians could upload a track online from their bedroom and potentially reach millions.

Want people in another city to hear your band?

Get in the van.

Want to build an audience?

Get in the van.

Want to play a city where nobody has booked bands like yours before?

Find a promoter.

Make some calls.

Put up flyers.

Drive for ten hours.

Play.

Sleep on somebody’s floor.

Then…

get back in the van.

💪 ENTER HENRY ROLLINS

Henry Rollins — then known as Henry Garfield — was a young punk fan from Washington, D.C.

He wasn’t some carefully auditioned rock vocalist selected by management.

He was part of the scene.

A fan.

A participant.

A bloke who happened to know Black Flag and eventually found himself joining them.

Imagine going from watching your favourite band to becoming their singer.

Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?

Yeah.

About that…

😂

Rollins joined Black Flag in 1981.

And very quickly, the dream became something considerably more complicated.

🎤 HENRY CHANGES THE BAND

Rollins brought enormous physical intensity to Black Flag.

Shaved head.

Muscular frame.

Tattooed.

Aggressive stage presence.

He looked like he was preparing to fight the microphone.

And sometimes the audience seemed interested in joining in.

The Rollins-era Black Flag became one of hardcore’s most visually imposing bands.

But Rollins wasn’t simply acting tough.

The journals reveal someone far more complicated.

Angry.

Isolated.

Observant.

Self-critical.

Sometimes funny.

Sometimes absolutely miserable.

And frequently exhausted beyond belief.

That’s one of the reasons Get in the Van works so well.

The mythology disappears.

🚐 THE VAN IS THE REAL STAR

Honestly, they could’ve called this book:

WHY DOES EVERYTHING SMELL?

Touring at Black Flag’s level wasn’t glamorous.

The van became transport.

Bedroom.

Living room.

Storage unit.

Argument chamber.

Occasionally sanctuary.

Several sweaty musicians packed together for enormous distances.

Minimal privacy.

Very little money.

Unpredictable food.

Constant fatigue.

And the knowledge that after driving hundreds of miles, the gig might still be cancelled.

Or nobody might turn up.

Or everyone might turn up and attempt to punch you.

Rock ’n’ roll!

🤘😂

🛣️ DIY TOURING BEFORE THE INTERNET

This might be the most historically valuable aspect of the book.

Get in the Van documents what underground touring actually required before the internet transformed everything.

No social media.

No Google Maps.

No instant ticket platforms.

No group chats.

No GPS.

No quick Instagram post saying:

“CARDIFF TONIGHT! WHO’S COMING?!”

Information travelled slowly.

Contacts mattered.

Phone numbers mattered.

Zines mattered.

Word of mouth mattered.

If somebody in another city knew a bloke who knew someone with access to a VFW hall?

Congratulations.

You might have a gig.

Black Flag helped build touring routes that later underground bands could follow.

That contribution to punk culture is enormous.

💸 THERE’S NO MONEY, MUN

One of the great myths about being in a famous band is that fame automatically equals wealth.

Black Flag could be famous within hardcore circles and still be absolutely skint.

That’s the underground.

You can have people wearing your band’s logo in multiple countries and still be wondering whether you’ve got enough money for petrol.

Get in the Van constantly reminds you how precarious everything was.

Every breakdown mattered.

Every poorly attended show mattered.

Every promoter who didn’t pay mattered.

There was no enormous financial cushion.

If something went wrong?

You dealt with it.

Then you drove to the next gig.

👊 THE SHOWS COULD BE VIOLENT

This is where the book becomes genuinely disturbing.

Black Flag shows could be confrontational.

Violence wasn’t unusual.

Members of the audience might attack the band.

Fights could erupt.

Police attention followed punk gigs.

And Rollins frequently became a target.

The barrier between performer and audience wasn’t what you’d expect at a modern arena show.

Sometimes there barely was a barrier.

Rollins’ stage presence challenged people.

Some challenged him back.

Physically.

The resulting environment could be genuinely dangerous.

And Get in the Van doesn’t romanticise the exhaustion that comes with constantly expecting trouble.

🚔 PUNK VS THE POLICE

The relationship between early Los Angeles hardcore and law enforcement was notoriously tense.

Punk shows could attract significant police attention.

Venues became reluctant to host bands.

Gigs were disrupted.

Promoters struggled.

The entire scene could feel under siege.

Whether every punk involved interpreted every confrontation accurately is another question — these are Rollins’ journals and therefore his perspective — but the atmosphere comes through clearly.

The band doesn’t feel like part of an entertainment industry.

They feel like outsiders moving from city to city through a hostile landscape.

🖤 THE JOURNALS MAKE IT HIT DIFFERENTLY

This is what separates Get in the Van from a conventional autobiography.

Rollins isn’t simply sitting decades later saying:

“Yeah, touring was pretty difficult.”

You’re reading thoughts recorded close to when events happened.

That changes everything.

There’s less hindsight.

Less mythology.

Less:

“Of course, looking back, I now realise…”

Instead you get immediacy.

He’s angry now.

He’s exhausted now.

He’s lonely now.

He hates someone now.

That rawness can be uncomfortable.

But it’s incredibly powerful.

😡 HENRY ISN’T ALWAYS LIKEABLE

And thank God for that.

A sanitised version of Get in the Van would be pointless.

Rollins can come across as furious, judgemental, isolated and difficult.

Sometimes you’ll agree with him.

Sometimes you’ll understand him.

Sometimes you’ll want to reach into the book and say:

“Henry, mate. Have a sandwich and calm down.”

😂

But that’s the point.

These are journals.

They’re not PR statements.

Human beings think unpleasant things.

Especially human beings who haven’t slept properly, are living in a van and have just been punched by someone during a gig.

The honesty gives the book its power.

🎸 GREG GINN AND THE BLACK FLAG MACHINE

Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn looms large over the story.

Ginn was the band’s musical driving force and a fiercely independent figure.

Through SST Records, Black Flag didn’t merely release their own music.

They helped create an infrastructure for American underground rock.

SST would become enormously important.

But within Black Flag, relationships could be complicated.

The band changed line-ups repeatedly.

Musicians came and went.

Musical direction evolved.

And the relentless workload created enormous pressure.

This wasn’t four best mates having a laugh in a van.

It was often much more intense than that.

💿 DAMAGED

Rollins’ first album with Black Flag was the landmark Damaged, released in 1981.

And what an album.

“Rise Above.”

“Six Pack.”

“TV Party.”

“Police Story.”

“Damaged I.”

It’s furious.

Claustrophobic.

Funny in places.

Bleak in others.

And absolutely foundational to American hardcore.

Rollins sounds like someone trying to physically escape through the microphone.

The album remains essential because the aggression isn’t merely sonic.

There’s frustration underneath it.

Alienation.

Boredom.

Social pressure.

The feeling that the world surrounding you is completely bloody ridiculous.

Punk, basically.

🍺 TV PARTY!

One of Black Flag’s great tricks was that they could be intensely serious and completely sarcastic.

“TV Party” is ridiculous.

And brilliant.

A song mocking people wasting their lives sitting around drinking beer and watching television became one of the band’s most recognisable tracks.

It’s also a reminder that hardcore wasn’t permanently grim.

There was humour.

Stupid humour.

Sarcasm.

Scene jokes.

Punk would be unbearable if everyone spent 24 hours a day staring angrily at capitalism.

Sometimes you’ve got to take the piss.

🐌 BLACK FLAG SLOWS DOWN

Here’s something especially interesting for readers who think hardcore simply means:

PLAY EVERYTHING FASTER!

Black Flag evolved.

The band incorporated slower, heavier and increasingly abrasive material.

Albums such as My War challenged sections of the hardcore audience.

The second side of My War is particularly important.

Slow.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Some punks hated it.

But those crushing tracks would later influence musicians connected to sludge, grunge and other forms of heavy alternative music.

That’s the beautiful thing about bands refusing to give audiences exactly what they expect.

Sometimes everyone complains.

Then ten years later half the scene is copying you.

🧠 ROLLINS VS HIMSELF

The most fascinating conflict in the book isn’t necessarily Black Flag versus audiences.

Or Black Flag versus police.

Or Henry versus the band.

It’s:

Henry Rollins versus Henry Rollins.

His internal monologue can be brutal.

He isolates himself.

He questions relationships.

He seems uncomfortable with vulnerability.

He throws himself into physical discipline.

He writes.

He observes.

He appears simultaneously desperate for connection and determined to push people away.

That’s where Get in the Van becomes something more than a punk-history book.

It’s a portrait of a young man trying to construct an identity under extreme circumstances.

🌍 EUROPE

Black Flag’s touring eventually extended internationally.

And reading about underground touring across different countries adds another dimension.

Different venues.

Different scenes.

Different expectations.

But plenty of the same problems.

Bad accommodation remains bad accommodation regardless of language.

😂

The wider touring also demonstrates just how far hardcore had travelled.

This supposedly tiny underground American scene had developed international connections.

Without major-label machinery.

Without mainstream radio.

Without MTV turning everyone into celebrities.

People found the records.

People exchanged tapes.

People read zines.

People wrote letters.

Community built the network.

🔥 THE PRICE OF NEVER STOPPING

This is where the title becomes almost philosophical.

Get in the van.

Again.

Again.

Again.

There’s something admirable about the commitment.

But eventually you start asking:

At what cost?

Relationships suffer.

Bodies suffer.

Mental health suffers.

Band friendships deteriorate.

Everyone becomes exhausted.

The lifestyle that initially represented freedom can eventually become another kind of prison.

You’re not working a conventional job.

Great.

But you’re also driving overnight to play to 70 people for almost no money before sleeping on a filthy floor.

Freedom is complicated, butt.

💥 BLACK FLAG IMPLODES

By 1986, Black Flag was finished.

After years of relentless touring, shifting line-ups, musical evolution and internal tension, the band reached the end.

Rollins moved forward.

So did Greg Ginn.

And Black Flag’s influence only became larger with time.

That’s often how underground music works.

The band exists.

People complain.

The band breaks up.

Ten years later everyone says:

“They changed everything.”

😂

Black Flag’s importance to hardcore, alternative rock and DIY touring culture is enormous.

And Get in the Van explains why better than most books ever could.

🎤 THE AUDIOBOOK IS A DIFFERENT BEAST

If you enjoy the book, the audio version is absolutely worth exploring too.

Hearing Rollins himself deliver material from the journals adds another layer.

The anger.

The sarcasm.

The exhaustion.

The humour.

That unmistakable voice.

Suddenly you’re not merely reading Henry’s younger thoughts.

Older Henry is performing them back at you.

It can feel almost like spoken word colliding with punk history.

Which makes perfect sense considering where Rollins’ career eventually went.

📚 THIS ISN’T A NORMAL ROCK AUTOBIOGRAPHY

That’s crucial.

If you arrive expecting:

“Then our album went platinum and we bought Ferraris…”

Wrong van, mate.

Black Flag’s story is almost the inverse of the classic rock-star narrative.

The bigger their underground reputation became, the harder they seemed to work.

There’s no giant commercial payoff at the end.

No stadium victory lap.

No enormous mansion.

The reward was:

the work itself.

Play.

Travel.

Create.

Survive.

Repeat.

There’s something incredibly punk about that.

⚠️ ONE PERSON’S DIARY ISN’T THE WHOLE HISTORY

As powerful as the book is, there’s an important caveat.

This is Henry Rollins’ experience.

His journals.

His emotions.

His interpretation.

That doesn’t automatically make every judgement the definitive history of Black Flag.

Other members experienced the band differently.

Promoters experienced events differently.

Fans experienced shows differently.

Memory and perspective matter.

So if you’re researching Black Flag seriously, don’t stop here.

Read other accounts.

Listen to interviews.

Explore the wider SST story.

But as a document of what touring Black Flag felt like to Henry Rollins?

It’s extraordinary.

🤘 WHY GET IN THE VAN STILL MATTERS

Because modern musicians exist in a completely different world.

You can release music globally without pressing a physical record.

You can promote a gig instantly.

You can navigate to a venue using your phone.

You can communicate with fans directly.

You can potentially build an audience without leaving your bedroom.

Black Flag operated before all of that.

They physically carried their music into new territories.

The network was built mile by mile.

Gig by gig.

Floor by floor.

Flyer by flyer.

Van by van.

That’s why the title is perfect.

If you wanted it badly enough?

Get in the van.

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Get in the Van is one of the essential books about punk rock.

Not because it explains every aspect of Black Flag.

It doesn’t.

Not because Henry Rollins is always right.

He isn’t.

It’s essential because it captures something incredibly difficult to reconstruct:

what the underground actually felt like while it was happening.

Dirty.

Exciting.

Violent.

Boring.

Funny.

Lonely.

Exhausting.

Inspiring.

All at once.

There’s virtually no glamorous nostalgia because much of the material was written before anyone knew this period would become legendary.

That’s priceless.

The people sleeping on floors weren’t thinking:

“One day music historians will consider this culturally significant.”

They were thinking:

“Whose turn is it to drive?”

And that’s why we love this book.

⭐ RIFF REPORT RATING: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 – 5/5

Brutal, honest, exhausting and absolutely essential.

If you play in a band and dream about touring, read it.

If you’re interested in American hardcore, read it.

If you’ve ever wondered how underground bands built audiences before social media, read it.

And if you’ve ever complained because your festival hotel didn’t include breakfast?

Read it twice. 😂

Get in the Van strips away the romance of touring and somehow makes the commitment behind it even more impressive.

No private jet.

No luxury bus.

No five-star suite.

Just a band.

Some equipment.

A road map.

A gig hundreds of miles away.

And four words:

GET IN THE VAN. 🚐🤘🔥

💬 OVER TO YOU, RIFFERS!

Have you read Get in the Van?

What’s your favourite Black Flag era or album — Damaged, My War, Slip It In or something else?

And here’s one for the gigging musicians:

What’s the worst van, hotel, floor, campsite or absolutely questionable sleeping arrangement you’ve ever endured while following or playing music? 😂

Get stuck into the comments, butt. 👇🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
