For years, the humble compact disc has been treated like the forgotten relic of the music world.

Streaming took over. Vinyl became cool again. Cassettes somehow returned from the dead wearing sunglasses and charging £18 for six songs.

Meanwhile, CDs were left rattling around in car gloveboxes, stacked beside old PlayStation games and buried inside enormous zip-up wallets containing everything from AC/DC and Korn to a homemade compilation labelled “Summer Bangers 2004.”

But hold onto your jewel cases, because the compact disc is apparently making one hell of a comeback. 💿⚡

In 2026, CD sales are reportedly growing at around six times the rate of vinyl sales.

That sounds massive.

It sounds like the CD has stormed back into the record shop, kicked over the vinyl display and demanded its old shelf space back.

There is, however, an important catch.

📈 The Big CD Revival Comes With a Statistical Twist

The headline does not necessarily mean CDs are outselling vinyl.

It means CD sales are growing faster in percentage terms.

Vinyl has already enjoyed years of renewed popularity, with collectors buying classic albums, coloured pressings, deluxe editions and limited releases that cost roughly the same as a weekend away in Tenby.

Because vinyl is already selling from a much bigger base, its growth naturally looks slower.

CDs, on the other hand, have spent years sitting at a lower sales level. That means even a smaller increase can produce a much larger percentage jump.

So while CD sales may be growing six times faster, vinyl can still be shifting more copies overall.

It is a bit like a pub band gaining 1,000 new followers while Metallica gains 5,000. The pub band has experienced the bigger percentage rise, but Lars Ulrich is probably not holding an emergency meeting just yet.

Still, the fact that CDs are growing at all is properly exciting.

The format that many believed had been buried by downloads and streaming is climbing back out of the grave, brushing off the dust and demanding an encore.

💿 Why Are CDs Becoming Popular Again?

The answer is probably a mixture of affordability, nostalgia, collectability and the simple joy of owning music.

Streaming is brilliantly convenient, but it can also make music feel temporary.

Songs appear in playlists, disappear into algorithms and are often skipped before the first chorus has even arrived.

A CD is different.

You buy it. You own it. You place it on your shelf. You read the booklet. You stare at the artwork. You discover who produced the album and which band member thanked their cat in the liner notes.

It creates a connection that a tiny image on a phone screen cannot quite replace.

And unlike vinyl, buying CDs does not always require a small bank loan and a difficult conversation with your partner.

💷 CDs Are Still Affordable

One of the biggest reasons behind the renewed interest is price.

Vinyl collecting is brilliant fun, but it can get painfully expensive.

A new album can cost £30, £40 or considerably more when limited editions, imports and deluxe box sets become involved.

Then, naturally, the band announces another pressing in “toxic swamp green with blood-red splatter” and suddenly your bank account is weeping in the corner.

CDs usually offer the same album, artwork and booklet for far less money.

That makes them a much easier entry point for younger fans who want to start collecting physical releases.

It also makes them ideal for those of us who love buying albums but still need enough money left over for gig tickets, festival food and at least one unnecessarily large hoodie.

🤘 Rock and Metal Fans Never Truly Abandoned CDs

Within the rock and metal scene, CDs never completely disappeared.

They may have lost their mainstream dominance, but fans continued buying them at gigs, festivals, independent shops and merch tables.

Walk into a venue and you will often find CDs stacked next to vinyl, shirts, patches, hoodies and one suspiciously expensive signed drum skin.

For independent bands, CDs remain one of the easiest ways to sell music directly to fans.

They are cheaper to manufacture than vinyl, easy to carry on tour and perfect for signing after a show.

A box of CDs can be thrown into the back of a van without requiring three roadies and a forklift.

They are also brilliant souvenirs.

That album bought after a sweaty club gig becomes tied to the memory of the night.

You remember the riffs, the crowd, the ringing ears and the moment somebody spilled warm lager down the back of your shirt during the opening song.

Lovely stuff. 🍺

🎸 Buying CDs Helps Support Bands

Streaming is useful for discovering artists, but the money musicians receive from individual streams is often tiny.

Buying a CD directly from a band can provide far more immediate support.

That cash can help pay for:

  • Fuel for the tour van
  • Rehearsal room hire
  • Recording costs
  • Equipment repairs
  • Accommodation
  • Food that does not come from a motorway service station at midnight

When fans buy physical music at the merch stand, the artist gets meaningful support and the buyer leaves with something they can keep.

Everybody wins.

Well, apart from the drummer who has to carry the remaining boxes back to the van.

📖 The Return of Album Artwork and Liner Notes

The shift towards streaming changed the way people experienced albums.

Artwork became a thumbnail.

Lyrics were hidden behind menus.

Production credits were often ignored entirely.

CDs bring those details back.

Opening the case and unfolding the booklet is part of the experience.

You can follow the lyrics, look through band photos and discover the full list of musicians, producers and recording studios involved.

For rock and metal fans, that stuff matters.

Album artwork has always been part of heavy music culture.

From iconic logos and fantasy landscapes to disturbing creatures and beautifully miserable black-and-white photographs, the visuals help build the world around the music.

A CD booklet may be smaller than a vinyl sleeve, but it still gives the artwork room to breathe.

🚗 The Car CD Player Still Has Plenty of Life Left

Another reason for the revival may be sitting inside millions of cars.

Not everyone owns a brand-new vehicle with wireless streaming, giant touchscreens and enough technology to control the weather.

Plenty of drivers are still travelling around with a trusty CD player in the dashboard.

For those people, CDs remain perfect.

Slide one in, press play and enjoy the entire album.

No adverts.

No notifications.

No mobile signal disappearing halfway through a guitar solo because you have driven into a Welsh valley.

Just riffs.

The car CD collection is also a sacred thing.

You may only have room for six albums, but those six albums will remain in the vehicle for approximately fourteen years.

🛒 Charity Shops Have Become CD Goldmines

Second-hand shops have also helped make CD collecting exciting again.

Charity shops, markets and independent record stores are packed with albums available for a few quid.

A proper rummage can uncover classic releases from bands such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, AC/DC and Foo Fighters.

Of course, you may need to dig through twelve Robbie Williams albums, several forgotten dance compilations and something called Relaxing Panpipes Volume Seven before finding them.

That is all part of the hunt.

There is genuine excitement in discovering a great album sitting unnoticed on a shelf.

It feels like rescuing a small piece of rock history.

🕰️ Nostalgia Is Playing a Huge Part

For listeners who grew up during the 1990s and 2000s, CDs carry powerful memories.

They remember saving pocket money for album release day.

They remember taking the booklet onto the bus and reading every lyric before reaching home.

They remember copying songs onto an MP3 player and spending an hour renaming tracks because the computer had identified the whole album as “Unknown Artist.”

They remember carefully choosing which CDs to take on holiday.

They remember the heartbreak of opening the case and discovering the disc was not inside.

That nostalgia matters.

The people who grew up buying CDs are now older, often with more disposable income and a strong desire to reconnect with the music and objects that shaped them.

The same thing happened with vinyl, retro gaming and practically every toy advertised on Saturday morning television.

👀 Younger Fans Are Discovering Physical Music Too

This revival is not only being driven by older collectors.

Younger listeners who grew up with streaming are discovering the appeal of physical music for the first time.

To them, owning a CD can feel personal and unusual.

Streaming provides almost unlimited choice, but unlimited choice can also make everything feel disposable.

Buying an album creates commitment.

You have chosen that record.

You have paid for it.

You have given it a place in your collection.

That encourages listeners to spend more time with complete albums rather than jumping between random songs.

And in a world built around endless scrolling, sitting down and listening from track one to the end can feel almost rebellious.

🔥 Could the Album Format Be Making a Comeback?

The renewed interest in CDs may also suggest that fans are rediscovering the joy of albums.

Streaming services often push playlists, singles and shuffled listening.

CDs encourage you to experience the running order chosen by the artist.

The dramatic opener.

The unexpected slower track.

The massive anthem in the middle.

The closing song that leaves you staring into space after it finishes.

Great albums are journeys.

Rock and metal have always understood that.

Concept albums, double records and furious 35-minute blasts of punk chaos all rely on pacing, mood and track order.

Listening from beginning to end gives those records the attention they deserve.

⚔️ CD Versus Vinyl — Do We Really Need a Winner?

Whenever physical music is discussed, the debate quickly becomes a battle.

Vinyl versus CD.

Analogue versus digital.

Huge artwork versus practical storage.

Warm sound versus crisp clarity.

But there does not need to be a winner.

Vinyl offers ritual and collectability.

Removing the record from its sleeve, placing it on the turntable and lowering the needle makes listening feel like an event.

CDs offer convenience, value and durability.

They take up less space, cost less and do not need flipping halfway through the album.

Both formats provide something streaming cannot fully replicate: ownership.

You can hold them, display them, lend them, sign them and keep them even if a licensing agreement changes.

No app can suddenly remove a CD from your shelf.

Unless the app has developed arms, in which case we have much bigger problems.

🎶 Streaming Still Has Its Place

None of this means streaming is the enemy.

Streaming is one of the best tools available for discovering new bands, exploring back catalogues and building festival playlists.

It allows fans to hear artists from around the world instantly.

It is convenient, accessible and unlikely to disappear.

The best outcome is not physical music replacing streaming.

It is both existing together.

Discover the band through streaming.

See them live.

Buy the CD from the merch stand.

Then annoy everyone in the car by playing it repeatedly on the drive home.

Proper job. 🤘

💿 The Real Winner Is Physical Music

The biggest story here is not that CDs are growing faster than vinyl.

It is that people still care about owning music.

After years of predictions that physical formats would vanish, fans continue buying records, CDs, tapes and deluxe editions.

They want artwork.

They want booklets.

They want shelves filled with albums.

They want objects connected to memories.

A physical album can remind you of a gig, a relationship, a road trip or a difficult period that music helped you survive.

That emotional connection is powerful.

It is why music collections matter.

They are not just piles of plastic.

They are personal histories told through riffs, choruses and terrible purchasing decisions.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

So, are CDs back?

Absolutely.

They may not have overtaken vinyl, and the “six times faster” headline needs a little context, but the renewed interest is still brilliant news.

The compact disc has survived downloads, streaming, cracked cases, broken hinges and decades of being used as an emergency coaster.

Now it is finding a new audience while welcoming back the fans who never stopped loving it.

Dust off the old stereo.

Dig out that enormous CD wallet.

Head to the merch stand at your next gig and pick up an album.

You may discover a forgotten classic, support a brilliant independent band or finally replace that copy of Back in Black that has skipped during the same guitar solo since 2003.

The CD was never dead, butt. It was just waiting for the encore. 💿🔥🤘

🎤 OVER TO YOU

Are you buying CDs again?

Did you ever stop collecting them?

Are you loyal to vinyl, fully committed to streaming or currently surrounded by enough physical music to open your own shop?

Let us know and keep supporting the artists who keep our speakers loud and our necks permanently damaged.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. 🐉🎸🔥

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
