Members of Tool, Pearl Jam, Korn, Garbage, Fugazi and Bikini Kill are among those supporting an online fundraiser for the punk-rock trailblazer
The rock community has once again proved that when one of its own is facing the fight of their life, the riffs stop being background noise and the entire scene steps forward together. 🤘💜
Musicians connected to Tool, Pearl Jam, Korn, Garbage, Fugazi, Bikini Kill, Green Day and Bad Religion are among the artists and industry figures who have donated to an online fundraiser supporting L7 bassist Jennifer Finch, following her diagnosis with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
The fundraiser was launched on 13 July 2026 by Finch’s friends, family and bandmates to help cover the extensive medical and home-care costs associated with her treatment and recovery.
After an enormous response from fans, musicians and organisations across the alternative music world, the campaign passed its original $350,000 target, raising more than $365,000 at the time of reporting. (People.com)
🧠 Jennifer Finch Undergoing Treatment
The 59-year-old bassist is currently receiving treatment after complications required her to undergo multiple surgeries.
Those procedures have reportedly resulted in physical limitations, meaning Finch now requires extensive professional support, including in-home nursing, medical equipment, physical therapy and speech therapy.
Funds raised will also help with other essential home-care expenses while she focuses on treatment and recovery. Organisers have said additional money will support the preservation of Finch’s artistic legacy and help complete a major creative project planned for release in 2027. (Louder)
It is heartbreaking news for a musician whose basslines, attitude and unstoppable presence have been part of L7’s identity for four decades.
🤘 Huge Names Step Forward
The list of people supporting the campaign reads like the guest list for the loudest alternative festival imaginable.
Among the notable contributions reported were:
- Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion and Epitaph Records, alongside Gina Gurewitz – $10,000
- Garbage – $8,000
- Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill – $5,000
- Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam – $5,000
- Adrienne Armstrong, wife of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong – $5,000
- Maynard James Keenan of Tool – $2,500
- Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman – $2,500
- Brian “Head” Welch of Korn – $1,000
- Guy Picciotto of Fugazi – $1,000
Thousands of fans have also contributed, shared the campaign and posted messages of love for Finch across social media. (People.com)
This is what the rock world does best, butt.
Behind the distortion, sweat, smashed guitars and festival mud, there is a genuine community — one that circles the wagons when somebody needs help.
🎸 Finch To Miss L7’s Farewell Tour
Finch will no longer be able to join L7 for the North American leg of the band’s upcoming Last Hurrah Tour.
Despite everything she is currently facing, she reportedly encouraged her bandmates to continue with the shows in her absence.
That decision says plenty about Finch’s strength, her commitment to L7 and the love she has for the band’s fans.
L7 vocalist and guitarist Donita Sparks said the group had been devastated by the news and was surrounding Finch with love, describing her as family and emphasising the strength of the community supporting her. (Pitchfork)
The farewell dates will therefore continue, but there is no escaping the fact that Finch’s absence will be deeply felt.
That bass sound, that stage presence and that beautifully rebellious energy cannot simply be replaced.
🔥 A Genuine Alternative-Rock Trailblazer
Jennifer Finch joined L7 in the 1980s and became an essential part of the group’s classic line-up alongside Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner and Demetra Plakas.
Together, they created music that was filthy, furious, funny and completely uninterested in asking anybody’s permission.
L7 crashed through punk, grunge, alternative rock and metal at a time when women in heavy music were still being patronised, underestimated or pushed towards the edge of the stage.
The band responded by turning the amps up.
Tracks including Pretend We’re Dead, Shitlist, Fuel My Fire, Andres and Wargasm became snarling alternative anthems, packed with riffs, sarcasm and enough attitude to flatten a backstage catering tent.
Their 1992 album Bricks Are Heavy remains one of the defining records of the alternative explosion, while Finch’s bass work gave the band’s sound its thick, rumbling backbone.
But L7’s impact went far beyond albums and chart positions.
They helped kick doors open for women in punk, grunge and heavy rock, inspiring countless musicians to pick up instruments, start bands and make a glorious racket of their own.
💜 More Than Music
Finch’s creative life has never been limited to playing bass.
She has also worked as a photographer, writer and designer, documenting scenes and communities from inside the culture rather than simply observing from the pavement.
That wider artistic legacy is one of the reasons the fundraiser’s organisers are also looking towards preserving her work and supporting the completion of future creative projects.
For fans, this campaign is not merely about helping a famous musician.
It is about supporting somebody who has spent decades contributing to the culture, energy and visual history of alternative music.
🗣️ The Riff Report Says…
There are moments when the rock community’s tough exterior cracks open and reveals the massive beating heart underneath.
This is one of those moments.
Jennifer Finch has spent decades standing on stages, hammering out basslines and helping L7 inspire generations of outsiders, misfits, punks, rockers and anyone who ever felt stronger after turning a loud song up.
Now, the same community she helped build is standing behind her.
Seeing musicians from Tool, Pearl Jam, Korn, Garbage, Fugazi, Bikini Kill, Green Day and Bad Religion join thousands of fans in supporting Jennifer is powerful — but it should not be surprising.
Rock music has always been at its best when it becomes more than entertainment.
It becomes family.
Everyone at The Riff Report Blog sends Jennifer Finch our love, strength and very best wishes as she continues treatment.
Keep fighting, Jennifer. The whole rock world is standing beside you. 💜🤘
Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Standing with Jennifer Finch.
