Right then butt… imagine this for a second.

The sun’s starting to dip over Vivary Park. The beer queues are flowing nicely. Somebody nearby is already dressed like it’s 1984. There’s eyeliner everywhere. Leather jackets despite it being 22 degrees. Smoke machines pumping into the evening sky. Synth bass rattling through the trees.

And then suddenly…

“OH HEAVEN… A PLACE ON EARTH…”

Wrong artist, sure — but you get the vibe. 😅

That’s exactly the sort of glorious retro chaos heading to Taunton this August as the brand-new Electric Summer Festival prepares to make its debut — bringing together legendary icons of synth-pop alongside modern electronic acts keeping the genre alive and kicking in 2026.

And honestly? This lineup has absolutely no business being this good for a first-year festival.

🌟 A FESTIVAL BUILT FOR PEOPLE WHO STILL LOVE REAL MUSIC

There’s something genuinely refreshing about Electric Summer.

In a festival landscape dominated by algorithm-core playlists, TikTok trends, and 12-second attention spans, this feels like an event built for people who genuinely LOVE music.

Not just background noise.
Not just “content.”
Not just something to film for Instagram stories before talking over the band.

This is music for:

  • proper fans,
  • old-school gig-goers,
  • synth obsessives,
  • alternative club veterans,
  • and anyone who’s ever dramatically stared out of a rain-covered train window pretending they were in an 80s music video.

And honestly? We respect the hell out of that. 🤘

Festival organiser Jez Damsell and Souvenir Events clearly understand the emotional connection people have with this music.

Because synth-pop wasn’t just catchy.

It was emotional.
Futuristic.
Weird.
Stylish.
Political.
Romantic.
Massive.

And its influence is STILL everywhere today.

Without these artists, entire generations of electronic music, industrial rock, alternative dance, darkwave, synthwave, and even modern metal wouldn’t sound the same.

🎤 HOWARD JONES — THE HOMECOMING HEADLINE EVERYONE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT

Let’s start with the big one.

Howard Jones returning to Taunton for his ONLY UK show of 2026 is honestly a massive booking for a debut festival.

This isn’t some heritage act phoning it in either.

Howard Jones has remained one of the hardest-working and most respected names in electronic music for over four decades — constantly touring, evolving, and still pulling huge crowds around the world.

The bloke literally played LIVE AID.

That alone places him in rock and pop history forever.

But beyond the history, it’s the songs that still hit hardest.

Tracks like:

  • New Song
  • Hide And Seek
  • What Is Love?
  • Pearl In The Shell
  • Things Can Only Get Better

…still feel huge live.

There’s a warmth and humanity to Howard’s music that’s aged beautifully.

And knowing this show carries personal significance because Taunton has been his home for over 20 years adds another emotional layer entirely.

This won’t just feel like another festival set.

It’ll feel like a celebration.

A proper hometown moment.

And honestly, we reckon the atmosphere when he walks on stage is going to be absolutely electric. ⚡

⚡ HEAVEN 17 ARE STILL ABSOLUTE TITANS

Then you’ve got Heaven 17.

A band whose music somehow sounds MORE relevant every single year.

Temptation remains one of the greatest synth-pop tracks ever written and still fills dancefloors across clubs, festivals, and alternative nights all over the UK.

Meanwhile (We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang still sounds bold, fearless, and politically sharp decades after release.

That’s the thing about the best electronic music.

It doesn’t age.

It mutates.

It evolves with culture.

And Heaven 17 have remained one of the genre’s most influential acts because they always understood that synth music could still carry emotion, politics, rebellion, and personality.

Plus — let’s be honest — hearing Temptation in a packed festival field with everyone singing at full volume is going to be one of those “core memory” festival moments. 🍻

🖤 BLANCMANGE ARE ABOUT TO SOUND INCREDIBLE IN A PARK SETTING

Now let’s talk about Blancmange.

If you know, you KNOW.

There’s something wonderfully strange and hypnotic about Blancmange’s sound that’s always separated them from the rest of the 80s synth scene.

Living On The Ceiling still feels gloriously weird in the best possible way, while tracks like Don’t Tell Me remain staples for alternative DJs everywhere.

And in an outdoor summer festival environment?

Oh mate.

Those atmospheric synth textures drifting through the evening air are going to sound gorgeous.

You can already picture it:

  • lights cutting through the trees,
  • smoke drifting across the crowd,
  • everyone swaying with drinks in hand,
  • random middle-aged blokes suddenly remembering every lyric from 1983.

Absolute scenes, mun. 😅

🌌 THE SUPPORTING LINEUP DESERVES SERIOUS LOVE TOO

One thing we massively appreciate at The Riff Report is when festivals support newer acts instead of relying entirely on nostalgia.

Electric Summer absolutely gets that balance right.

🖤 Black Nail Cabaret

Flying in from Hungary, Black Nail Cabaret bring dark electronic energy dripping in atmosphere and theatrical flair.

Think gothic clubs.
Industrial moods.
Cold synth textures.
Huge stage presence.

Exactly the sort of act that’ll gain loads of new fans from this festival.

🎛️ Mesh

Anyone who’s followed the UK electronic scene properly already knows Mesh are cult heroes.

The Bristol-based alternative electronic rock outfit have spent years building a devoted fanbase across Europe thanks to emotionally charged songwriting and massive synth-driven soundscapes.

One of those bands people discover once and then never stop talking about.

⚡ Agency-V

Agency-V are one of the names people should seriously keep an eye on.

Supporting Gary Numan during his Glastonbury warm-up shows in 2025 massively raised their profile, and Electric Summer feels like another huge step forward for them.

If you like modern dark electronic music with proper atmosphere and cinematic vibes, get there early.

Trust us.

🌃 Neon Fields

Local representation too! 🙌

Neon Fields are helping wave the flag for the South West with a sound inspired by:

  • Depeche Mode
  • Muse
  • Gary Numan

Which honestly sounds like a recipe for absolute synth-rock chaos and we are fully onboard with it.

🎧 AND YES… THERE’S GOING TO BE LOADS OF DANCING

Festival DJ duties fall to legendary producer and remixer Paul Dakeyne.

Meaning the gaps between bands won’t feel like downtime.

They’ll feel like one giant retro nightclub in a park.

Expect:

  • huge singalongs,
  • synth classics,
  • alternative bangers,
  • and at least one bloke trying to moonwalk after too many ciders.

It’s basically guaranteed.

❤️ A FESTIVAL THAT ACTUALLY GIVES BACK

One of the loveliest things about Electric Summer is its support for Nordoff and Robbins.

A donation from every ticket sold will help fund music therapy work across the UK — supporting vulnerable people through the power of music.

And honestly, in a world where live music venues continue to struggle and the industry often feels increasingly corporate, seeing festivals support meaningful causes genuinely matters.

Music changes lives.
Always has.
Always will.

🎪 WHY ELECTRIC SUMMER FEELS IMPORTANT

This might sound dramatic…

…but festivals like Electric Summer genuinely matter.

Because they remind people that alternative music scenes still exist outside whatever Spotify playlists are trending this week.

They give older fans a chance to reconnect with music they love.

They introduce younger audiences to legendary artists they may have never experienced live before.

And they create community.

That’s what great festivals always do.

Whether it’s a metal festival in Wales, a punk all-dayer in a tiny venue, or a synth-pop celebration in Somerset — it’s all the same spirit underneath.

People gathering because music means something to them.

And honestly? That’s beautiful.

Even if half the crowd wakes up with sore knees the next morning. 😅

🍻 THIS COULD BECOME A HUGE EVENT FOR THE SOUTH WEST

For a debut year, Electric Summer already feels ambitious.

The location is gorgeous.
The lineup is genuinely quality.
The genre focus gives it identity.
And the atmosphere sounds like it’s going to be immaculate.

There’s real potential for this festival to become an annual fixture if people get behind it.

And with so many UK festivals either disappearing or becoming painfully expensive, it’s genuinely exciting seeing new independent events trying to build something different.

Especially ones rooted in actual love for music culture.

🎹 FINAL RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Electric Summer looks like one of the most interesting new UK festivals we’ve seen in ages.

It feels passionate.
It feels authentic.
And most importantly…

…it feels FUN.

No forced corporate nonsense.
No gimmicks.
Just brilliant music, iconic artists, exciting newer acts, and a crowd ready to dance their absolute heads off in a park until the stars come out.

And honestly?

That sounds absolutely lush, mun. ⚡🎹🤘

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
