Jim Morrison was always going to grab the headlines.

He was dangerous, magnetic and completely impossible to ignore.
But while Morrison became the face of The Doors, another member of the band was quietly creating the shadows around him.
That man was Ray Manzarek.
Manzarekโs keyboards did far more than decorate The Doorsโ songs. They gave the music its atmosphere, its intelligence and its unmistakable sense of unease.

The story of The Doors began in 1965 when Ray Manzarek bumped into Jim Morrison on Venice Beach in California.
The pair already knew each other from film school, but Morrison revealed that he had started writing songs.
One of those early compositions was โMoonlight Driveโ.
Manzarek immediately recognised that Morrisonโs words had something special. They were poetic, cinematic and unlike the straightforward pop lyrics dominating much of the radio at the time.
Ray reportedly heard the potential straight away.
From that conversation, the foundations of The Doors began to form.
Guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore later joined, completing one of the most distinctive line-ups in rock history.

His playing is subtle, but it is absolutely essential.
He never overcrowds the song.
Instead, he creates space.
Every note adds tension, atmosphere and a growing sense that something is not quite right.
The song is beautiful, but there is danger beneath the surface.

John Densmoreโs jazz-influenced drumming gave the music swing, tension and movement.
Robby Kriegerโs guitar playing added blues, flamenco, psychedelia and some of the bandโs greatest songwriting.
Ray Manzarek gave The Doors their instantly recognisable musical identity.
Morrison gave them the voice, the words and the danger.
Each member was essential.
Remove Manzarekโs keyboards from those records and something enormous disappears.
The darkness becomes less convincing.
The mystery fades.
The doors do not open quite as wide.

Jim Morrison died in Paris in 1971 at the age of 27, bringing the classic era of The Doors to a tragic end.
The surviving members initially continued making music together, but the unique chemistry of the original four could never truly be recreated.
Manzarek continued working as a musician, producer, writer and performer.
He produced music for influential Los Angeles punk band X, helping shape another important chapter of the cityโs musical history.
He also continued performing The Doorsโ music, often alongside Robby Krieger, introducing the songs to generations of fans who had never experienced the original band.
Until his death in 2013, Ray remained a passionate storyteller and one of the strongest guardians of The Doorsโ legacy.
He spoke about the group with energy, humour and an almost spiritual belief in what they had created.
To Manzarek, The Doors were never simply an old band from the 1960s.
They were an idea.
A meeting point between music, poetry, theatre and danger.
