Jim Morrison was always going to grab the headlines.

He had the leather trousers, the hypnotic stare, the wild poetry and the kind of unpredictable stage presence that made audiences lean forward while venue staff quietly checked where the fire exits were.

He was dangerous, magnetic and completely impossible to ignore.

But while Morrison became the face of The Doors, another member of the band was quietly creating the shadows around him.

That man was Ray Manzarek.

Manzarek’s keyboards did far more than decorate The Doors’ songs. They gave the music its atmosphere, its intelligence and its unmistakable sense of unease.

Morrison brought the poetry.

Ray Manzarek gave it somewhere dark and mysterious to live. 🎹🖤

🌊 It All Began on Venice Beach

The story of The Doors began in 1965 when Ray Manzarek bumped into Jim Morrison on Venice Beach in California.

The pair already knew each other from film school, but Morrison revealed that he had started writing songs.

One of those early compositions was “Moonlight Drive”.

Manzarek immediately recognised that Morrison’s words had something special. They were poetic, cinematic and unlike the straightforward pop lyrics dominating much of the radio at the time.

Ray reportedly heard the potential straight away.

From that conversation, the foundations of The Doors began to form.

Guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore later joined, completing one of the most distinctive line-ups in rock history.

Four musicians.

Four completely different personalities.

One sound that nobody else could imitate.

🎹 The Keyboard Sound That Defined The Doors

Most rock bands of the 1960s were built around guitars, bass and drums.

The Doors were different.

The band did not regularly use a permanent bass guitarist during live performances. Instead, Manzarek often played bass notes using a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass with his left hand while performing organ and keyboard parts with his right.

That is difficult enough to imagine, never mind actually doing it while Jim Morrison is prowling around the stage like a poetic panther who has misplaced his trousers.

Manzarek made it look effortless.

His Vox Continental organ became one of the most recognisable sounds of the psychedelic era.

It could sound playful, haunting, jazzy or completely sinister.

Sometimes it felt like a carnival.

Sometimes it felt like a church service being held by ghosts.

Sometimes it sounded like something was following you home.

That was Ray Manzarek’s genius.

He did not simply play notes.

He created environments.

🔥 “Light My Fire” — One of Rock’s Greatest Keyboard Moments

The opening keyboard part of “Light My Fire” remains one of the most instantly recognisable introductions in rock music.

Within seconds, Manzarek pulls the listener into The Doors’ strange and intoxicating world.

The song was written primarily by Robby Krieger, but Ray’s arrangement and playing helped transform it into something enormous.

His extended keyboard solo brought jazz improvisation, classical influences and psychedelic experimentation into the middle of a rock single.

It was intelligent without becoming boring.

Complex without losing its swagger.

It sounded like Bach had wandered into a smoky Los Angeles club, necked three whiskies and decided to join a psychedelic rock band.

Tidy work, mun. 🎹🔥

🌧 “Riders on the Storm” — Beauty With Something Sinister Underneath

Few songs capture the brilliance of Ray Manzarek better than “Riders on the Storm”.

The rain begins.

The thunder rolls.

Then Manzarek’s electric piano enters, gliding through the track like headlights moving across a wet road at midnight.

His playing is subtle, but it is absolutely essential.

He never overcrowds the song.

Instead, he creates space.

Every note adds tension, atmosphere and a growing sense that something is not quite right.

The song is beautiful, but there is danger beneath the surface.

It sounds like a peaceful night drive until you realise the car behind you has been following for the past fifty miles.

That feeling of elegance mixed with menace was central to The Doors’ music.

Ray Manzarek mastered it.

🎭 Morrison Was the Chaos — Manzarek Was the Control

Jim Morrison’s unpredictability became part of The Doors’ legend.

At his best, he could hold an audience completely still with a whisper before sending them into chaos with a scream.

At other times, his drinking, confrontational behaviour and refusal to follow expectations created enormous pressure for everyone around him.

Through it all, Manzarek remained one of the band’s steadying forces.

While Morrison explored the boundaries of performance, Ray maintained the musical structure.

He kept the songs moving.

He anchored the improvisation.

He helped ensure that the entire performance did not disappear into complete chaos.

That stability gave Morrison the freedom to take risks.

Behind the wild frontman stood three exceptional musicians who could react instantly to whatever happened next.

Manzarek was often the musical compass.

Morrison might have appeared to be leading the band into the wilderness, but Ray knew where the road was.

🎼 More Than a Rock Keyboard Player

Manzarek’s musical background reached far beyond rock ’n’ roll.

His playing drew inspiration from:

  • Classical music
  • Jazz
  • Blues
  • Boogie-woogie
  • Psychedelia
  • Rhythm and blues
  • Early rock ’n’ roll

That broad musical knowledge helped The Doors move between completely different moods.

They could sound aggressive on “Break On Through (To the Other Side)”.

They could sound strange and theatrical on “People Are Strange”.

They could sound apocalyptic on “The End”.

They could sound sweaty, fast and dangerous on “L.A. Woman”.

Manzarek adapted to every song.

He knew when to dominate and when to disappear into the background.

He could fill an entire room with sound, then leave just enough silence to make Morrison’s next lyric feel even more unsettling.

That kind of restraint is just as important as technical ability.

Ray had both.

🚪 The Doors Were Never Just Jim Morrison

Rock history loves a frontman.

It loves mythology, chaos and tragedy.

As a result, bands are often reduced to the most famous person standing at the front of the stage.

Queen becomes Freddie Mercury.

Nirvana becomes Kurt Cobain.

The Doors becomes Jim Morrison.

But The Doors were never simply Morrison and three backing musicians.

John Densmore’s jazz-influenced drumming gave the music swing, tension and movement.

Robby Krieger’s guitar playing added blues, flamenco, psychedelia and some of the band’s greatest songwriting.

Ray Manzarek gave The Doors their instantly recognisable musical identity.

Morrison gave them the voice, the words and the danger.

Each member was essential.

Remove Manzarek’s keyboards from those records and something enormous disappears.

The darkness becomes less convincing.

The mystery fades.

The doors do not open quite as wide.

🕯 Keeping the Music Alive

Jim Morrison died in Paris in 1971 at the age of 27, bringing the classic era of The Doors to a tragic end.

The surviving members initially continued making music together, but the unique chemistry of the original four could never truly be recreated.

Manzarek continued working as a musician, producer, writer and performer.

He produced music for influential Los Angeles punk band X, helping shape another important chapter of the city’s musical history.

He also continued performing The Doors’ music, often alongside Robby Krieger, introducing the songs to generations of fans who had never experienced the original band.

Until his death in 2013, Ray remained a passionate storyteller and one of the strongest guardians of The Doors’ legacy.

He spoke about the group with energy, humour and an almost spiritual belief in what they had created.

To Manzarek, The Doors were never simply an old band from the 1960s.

They were an idea.

A meeting point between music, poetry, theatre and danger.

🤘 The Riff Report Verdict

Jim Morrison grabbed the headlines because he was built for them.

He was charismatic, unpredictable, poetic and doomed in exactly the way rock mythology loves.

But Ray Manzarek gave The Doors their depth.

He gave them musicality.

He gave them menace.

His organ turned simple chords into swirling nightmares.

His electric piano made storms feel colder.

His left hand replaced the missing bassist while his right hand created some of the most famous keyboard parts ever recorded.

He did not simply stand behind Morrison.

He built the musical world Morrison inhabited.

The singer may have been the figure standing in the spotlight, but Ray Manzarek controlled the darkness surrounding him.

More than fifty years later, those keyboards still sound strange, beautiful and slightly dangerous.

Exactly as they should.

Rest easy, Ray. 🎹🖤

The storm is still rolling.

The riders are still riding.

And the music is still opening doors.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Forever Strange. 🤘🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
