Ah, the ’70s. A glorious, glittery, and at times downright grimy decade that birthed some of the loudest, wildest, and most legendary rock bands the worldโs ever seen. While the rest of the world was inventing microwave dinners and disco balls, rock music was kicking doors in, smashing guitars, and starting revolutions one power chord at a time.
So here it is, butt โ The Riff Reportโs definitive, opinionated, probably argument-starting list of the 12 best rock bands from the 1970s. ๐ค๐ฅ
๐ฅ 12. Blue รyster Cult
๐ More cowbell. Always more cowbell.
They werenโt the loudest or the flashiest โ but they were mysterious, melodic, and borderline mythical. โDonโt Fear the Reaperโ became a cultural reset, and their eerie, sci-fi vibes set them apart from the denim-and-leather brigade. Plus, the riffs? Underrated and still nasty.
Must-Hear Track: Godzilla (It stomps, literally)
๐ฆ 11. The Eagles
Smooth harmonies, sour relationships.
You either love โem or think theyโre a bit too soft for this list. But come on โ Hotel California is an eternal classic. They brought West Coast cool, impeccable songwriting, and a mountain of album sales. Also, they nearly killed each other several times. Proper rock behaviour.
Must-Hear Track: Life in the Fast Lane
๐น 10. Deep Purple
They invented smoke. And fire. And volume.
Youโve played that Smoke on the Water riff on your mateโs cheap Argos guitar โ donโt deny it. But beyond the beginner licks, Deep Purple were beasts: prog wizards, organ abusers, and live juggernauts who made the ’70s their thunderous playground.
Must-Hear Track: Highway Star
๐งท 9. Ramones
1-2-3-4 changed the world.
Four misfits from Queens, minimal chords, maximum attitude. They made punk real, raw, and ridiculously fast. Leather jackets became armour. Their legacy? Infinite. They didn’t need to solo โ they meant it, man.
Must-Hear Track: Blitzkrieg Bop
๐ช 8. Fleetwood Mac
Sex, drama, and a sprinkle of witchcraft.
They were in a band. They dated each other. They broke up. They wrote hits about it while still in the band. Rumours was basically a soap opera on vinyl. Stevie Nicks twirled through the trauma, Lindsey shredded through the sadness, and Mick just drummed like a wizard.
Must-Hear Track: The Chain (Especially THAT bassline)
โก 7. AC/DC
Riff machines from the land down under.
Dirty, simple, sweaty rock ‘n’ roll. Bon Scott was cheeky and wild. Angus Young wore a school uniform and shredded like a demon. Every song was a punch in the pub. And we wouldn’t change a thing.
Must-Hear Track: Let There Be Rock
๐ 6. Aerosmith
Toxic twins and tongue-twisting classics.
Before the MTV ballads, they were gritty blues-rock gods. Steven Tyler was a peacocking powerhouse, Joe Perry was a riff-blasting beast. Together? Chaos in snakeskin boots. They crashed, burned, and came back louder.
Must-Hear Track: Sweet Emotion
๐ 5. Queen
Opera meets arena rock.
Freddie Mercury was a rock deity, full stop. Brian May built his own guitar (like a mad professor). Together, they did everything โ glam, metal, ballads, disco โ and did it brilliantly. โBohemian Rhapsodyโ alone could earn them a Top 5 spot.
Must-Hear Track: Somebody to Love
๐ค 4. The Who
Amp-smashing, scream-hurling, drum-exploding legends.
The Who destroyed their gear before it was cool. Daltrey howled, Townshend windmilled, and Keith Moon… well, he lived like every gig was his last (and nearly made it true). They were the sound of rebellion โ and actual volume.
Must-Hear Track: Baba O’Riley (a.k.a. โTeenage Wastelandโ to casuals)
๐ 3. Led Zeppelin
They brought the thunder. Literally.
Zep werenโt just a band โ they were mythology. Robert Plantโs golden curls, Jimmy Pageโs dragon suits, Bonhamโs thunder thighs on the drumsโฆ They combined blues, folk, hard rock and actual wizardry into a sonic force no one could touch.
Must-Hear Track: When the Levee Breaks
๐ 2. Pink Floyd
Far out, man โ but also deeply, painfully in.
No band made emotional breakdowns sound this stunning. Floyd werenโt headbangers โ they were headphone legends. Dark Side of the Moon still sells better than most albums released last week. Theyโll break your heart and expand your mind in the same track.
Must-Hear Track: Comfortably Numb
๐ธ๏ธ 1. Black Sabbath
The birth. The riffs. The darkness.
They invented heavy metal. Four working-class lads from Birmingham made the devilโs music with a wink and a riff that could crush concrete. “Paranoid”? Classic. “Iron Man”? Iconic. Ozzy? Immortal. Sabbath werenโt just the best of the โ70s โ they redefined everything after.
Must-Hear Track: War Pigs (turn it up until your nan complains)
๐ค HONOURABLE MENTIONS (Don’t @ us):
- KISS โ Fire, face paint, and marketing madness
- Lynyrd Skynyrd โ Triple guitar attack and tragedy
- The Clash โ Punk with purpose
- ZZ Top โ Beard-driven boogie brilliance
- Judas Priest โ Setting the stage for the metal future
๐ค FINAL RIFF
From the sleaze of Sunset Strip to the foggy streets of Birmingham, the โ70s gave us the building blocks of everything we love about rock today. These werenโt just bands โ they were forces of nature, each blowing speakers and minds in equal measure.
So next time youโre spinning some vinyl or making a playlist for a road trip, dive into these bands and give thanks to the loud, the weird, and the wild that made the โ70s the most legendary decade in rock history.
๐ฌ Think we missed a band?
