A Saturday Headliner That Left the Field (and the Fans) Divided

Glastonbury. The holy grail of music festivals. The place where legends are born, careers are crowned, and magic happens beneath Somerset skies. Itโ€™s where Bowie mesmerised, Beyoncรฉ redefined, and McCartney had the boomers crying into their cider. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐ŸŽถ

So, when it was announced that Neil Young โ€” one of the godfathers of grunge, folk-rock royalty, and a bona fide protest-poet โ€” would be closing the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night at Glastonbury 2025, reactions were mixed. ๐Ÿคจ

Some screamed โ€œYESS MUN! About time!โ€ Others tilted their heads and asked, โ€œReally? In this slot?โ€

And now, post-performance, with walkouts galore, BBC silence, and fans either furious or euphoric, itโ€™s safe to say… Neilโ€™s Glasto set will go down as one of the most divisive in the festivalโ€™s long, loud history.

Letโ€™s unpack the full tale: from the booking to the backlash, the setlist to the speculation, and why this headline slot mightโ€™ve just been one big misfire for the ages.

๐ŸŒฑ THE BUILD-UP: A LEGEND RETURNS TO WORTHY FARM

Neil Young is no stranger to Glastonbury. He last played back in 2009, delivering a tight, spirited set that featured plenty of fan favourites โ€” โ€œRockinโ€™ in the Free World,โ€ โ€œOld Man,โ€ and an 11-minute version of โ€œCortez the Killerโ€ that still lives rent-free in many peopleโ€™s heads.

So when rumours of his 2025 return started swirling โ€” confirmed just months before the festival โ€” many long-time fans saw it as a gift from the music gods.

But there were early warning signs.

Neil’s recent UK gigs had been more experimental, often filled with obscure deep cuts, and noticeably lacking in banger density. Heโ€™s always done things his way โ€” no crowd-pleasing nonsense, no apologies. Just the music. ๐ŸŽต

Still, heโ€™s NEIL BLOODY YOUNG, mun. You donโ€™t turn down the legend. Surely Glasto knew what they were doing, right?

Wellโ€ฆ about that.

๐ŸŽค SATURDAY NIGHT โ€“ WHEN THINGS GOT WEIRD

The sun was setting. Flags were waving. Glittery faces were wobbling with anticipation. And yet, there was a strange energy in the Pyramid Stage crowd.

Many had just witnessed pure chaos over at the Woodsies Stage, where a surprise Prodigy DJ set had bodies bouncing like ping-pong balls in a tumble dryer. Others were emotionally shattered after a powerful sunset performance by Cat Power doing her Dylan tribute.

And then came Neil.

He shuffled on stage like your weird uncle at Christmas, wearing a battered flannel shirt and mumbling something indecipherable into the mic before launching intoโ€ฆ โ€œVampire Bluesโ€.

Bold choice. Obscure. Slow. Murky. ๐Ÿฆ‡

Then came โ€œFrom Hank to Hendrixโ€. Then โ€œWalk On.โ€ Still no major hits. Still no fire.

By song four, a steady trickle of people began to quietly vacate the field. Then a bigger flow. Then an outright exodus.

It was like watching someone slowly air out a room with a broken fan.

๐Ÿ‘‹ THE WALKOUTS: GLASTO MASS EXIT STRATEGY

Weโ€™ve seen walkouts before. Kanyeโ€™s headline slot in 2015 had its fair share. So did Jay-Z. Even The Killers struggled against a torrential downpour one year.

But this? This felt unprecedented.

By the halfway mark, entire sections of the Pyramid field were emptying. Groups were spotted walking arm-in-arm toward Silver Hayes, muttering things like:

โ€œI thought we were getting Harvest โ€” not Harvest Moonlight with Jazz Overtures.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s trolling us, right? This is a protest performance against mainstream banger culture?โ€

โ€œI came for โ€˜Like a Hurricaneโ€™, not a hurricane of meh.โ€

Some bolted for The Other Stage, where Jamie xx was throwing a laser-fuelled rave. Others justโ€ฆ sat down and waited for it to end like a weird therapy session.

It wasnโ€™t that Neil was bad, per se โ€” the playing was tight, the sound was decent โ€” but the energy felt misaligned with what people expect from a final-night blowout.

You could almost feel the collective craving for catharsis, and what they got instead was an introspective folk odyssey. A beautiful mismatch.

๐Ÿ“บ THE BBC BLACKOUT โ€“ WHY DIDNโ€™T THEY AIR IT?

This is where it gets juicy. As news of the underwhelming set spread, people rushed to BBC iPlayer or their telly boxes to catch up.

Exceptโ€ฆ they couldnโ€™t.

The BBC had not broadcast Neilโ€™s set live, nor was it immediately available on replay. In fact, as of the Monday morning after Glasto โ€” still nada.

No footage. No official coverage. Just one clip of โ€œHeart of Goldโ€ floating around on TikTok, filmed by a shaky-handed fan behind a suspiciously yawning toddler. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

So what gives?

Here are the top conspiracy theories doing the rounds:

1. Neil Pulled the Plug Himself

Heโ€™s known to be precious about his recordings, especially live ones. Some reckon Neil didnโ€™t want the set immortalised.

2. Technical Issues

There are whispers that the BBCโ€™s feed from the Pyramid Stage suffered problems, though that doesnโ€™t explain the total lack of promo.

3. Editorial Choice

Some believe the Beeb just chose not to air it live, anticipating the slow pace and fearing it would kill the festival buzz.

4. Damage Control

Maybe, just maybe, someone at BBC HQ saw the walkouts and thoughtโ€ฆ best not give this airtime.

Either way, the lack of broadcast has only added fuel to the fire. Fans are fuming. Others are laughing. And some are calling it โ€œa beautiful mystery โ€” Neilโ€™s final protest.โ€

๐Ÿ“‹ THE SETLIST: OBSCURE GEMS OR SELF-SABOTAGE?

Hereโ€™s what we managed to piece together from setlist leaks, fan footage, and our own (slightly disoriented) notes:

  1. Vampire Blues
  2. From Hank to Hendrix
  3. Walk On
  4. Peace Trail
  5. Donโ€™t Be Denied
  6. Heart of Gold โ€“ finally, a lifeline!
  7. Like a Hurricane โ€“ but done in an ambient shoegaze style (!?)
  8. Iโ€™m the Ocean
  9. Harvest Moon โ€“ a moment of beauty, if you were still awake
  10. Rockinโ€™ in the Free World โ€“ slower, with extended spoken-word intro

Itโ€™s not a bad setlist โ€” but for Glastonburyโ€™s Sunday night finale? Some fans were expecting fireworks. What they got was flickering candlelight and a long, emotional sigh.

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ WAS IT REALLY THAT BAD?

Letโ€™s be fair. Plenty of ride-or-die Neil fans were in absolute bliss. They loved the deep cuts. The slower pace. The moodiness. The lack of pandering.

Some even called it a masterclass in anti-commercial artistry, a final โ€œscrew youโ€ to the TikTok generation that only wants big drops and confetti.

One fan told The Riff Report:

โ€œI came to be moved, not entertained. Neil moved me. The walkouts? Thatโ€™s just people who donโ€™t get it.โ€

Cool. But Glasto isnโ€™t a private concert. Itโ€™s a communal experience, and Neilโ€™s refusal to meet the crowd halfway left many feeling abandoned.

๐Ÿง  THE REAL PROBLEM: THE WRONG SLOT

Hereโ€™s the rub: this wasnโ€™t a bad setโ€ฆ it was a badly timed one.

Had Neil been booked for the Sunday legends slot, with people basking in the afternoon sun, sipping overpriced cider, and embracing nostalgia? It wouldโ€™ve been lush, mun.

But instead, he closed the entire festival โ€” a spot that demands energy, drama, catharsis. Think The Cure. Think Foo Fighters. Even Elton John gave the people what they wanted.

Neil Young gave themโ€ฆ Neil Young. Raw, real, slow, and steady.

For better or worse.

๐Ÿงจ HOW GLASTO HANDLES THIS IN FUTURE

Will this go down as a lesson for Emily Eavis and the Glasto bookers? Possibly.

Thereโ€™s a fine line between curating meaningful art and understanding the rhythm of the festival. And while thereโ€™s always room for surprises, the final night needs to bring people together, not split them down the middle like a poorly-tuned harmonica.

Expect future bookings to favour bands and artists that bring communal energy โ€” not introspective poetry and mood lighting.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ FAN REACTIONS โ€“ THE INTERNET NEVER FORGETS

Some of our favourite Glasto-goer takes from Twitter, Reddit and field chats:

โ€œI love Neil Young. But tonight was like watching an old dog refuse to chase the stick. Respect the legend. But that was not it.โ€ โ€“ @northernsoundboy

โ€œThe crowd leaving Neilโ€™s set looked like the start of the zombie apocalypse. Never seen so many glitter-covered corpses dragging their feet.โ€ โ€“ @sophiebeats_

โ€œIt was transcendental. You had to listen not party. Thatโ€™s the point.โ€ โ€“ Reddit user NeilWasRight69

โ€œBBC dodging the whole thing like it never happened. Did we hallucinate it?โ€ โ€“ @festivalowl

๐Ÿ FINAL VERDICT: A LEGEND MISPLACED

Neil Youngโ€™s Glastonbury 2025 performance will go down in the books โ€” just maybe not for the reasons anyone hoped.

Was it brave? Yes. Was it authentic? Absolutely. Was it the right choice for Sundayโ€™s closing slot at the worldโ€™s biggest festival?

Nah, butt. Not even close.

It was a beautiful mismatch. A legendary figure who showed up as himselfโ€ฆ but at the wrong party. People didnโ€™t want to feel feelings. They wanted to scream, cry, hug strangers and watch fireworks explode into the night sky.

Neil gave them philosophy. The crowd wanted fire.

๐Ÿ’ฌ YOUR TURN: WHAT DID YOU THINK?

Was Neil Youngโ€™s Glasto set a misunderstood masterpiece or a Sunday night snoozefest?

Should the BBC air it anyway? Did you stay? Did you walk? Did you cry into your falafel?

Sound off in the comments. Diolch for making it through, legend. And remember โ€” Glastonbury never really ends. It just takes a year-long nap. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
