Today, the rock world is raising its guitars, cranking the amps and collectively shouting โHappy Birthday!โ to one of the most recognisable, influential and downright brilliant musicians ever to walk onto a stage.
The legendary Sir Brian May turns 79 today, and letโs be honest, the man remains cooler than most of us could ever hope to be โ even if we were handed a homemade guitar, a wall of Vox amps and the keys to Wembley Stadium. ๐ค
As the unmistakable guitarist of Queen, Brian May helped create a sound that didnโt merely dominate rock music โ it blasted straight through the roof, orbited the planet and came back wearing sequins.
๐ธ THAT SOUND. THAT HAIR. THAT RED SPECIAL.
There are guitarists you recognise after a few bars.
Then thereโs Brian May.
You recognise him after about half a second.
That soaring, harmonised guitar tone has become one of the defining sounds of British rock music. Built around his beloved Red Special, the guitar Brian created with his father during his teenage years, his playing has always sounded completely unlike anyone else.
Warm, powerful, theatrical and capable of turning a single note into something that feels big enough to shake an arena, Brianโs style became one of Queenโs greatest weapons.
And what a weapon it was.
From the opening charge of Tie Your Mother Down to the majestic solo in Bohemian Rhapsody, Brian never simply played guitar parts. He created entire landscapes.
His solos sang.
His riffs stomped.
His layered harmonies sounded like an orchestra being launched into space.
Proper job, mun. ๐ถ๐
๐ HELPING QUEEN CONQUER THE WORLD
Alongside Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, Brian May helped turn Queen into one of the biggest and most beloved bands in music history.
Queen were never interested in doing anything quietly.
Their songs were massive.
Their performances were massive.
Their ambition was enormous.
While Freddie commanded the stage with unmatched charisma, Brian stood nearby with the Red Special, delivering riffs and solos that gave Queen their unmistakable musical muscle.
He also wrote some of the bandโs most famous songs, including:
- We Will Rock You
- The Show Must Go On
- Who Wants to Live Forever
- Hammer to Fall
- Save Me
- Fat Bottomed Girls
- I Want It All
That list alone would be enough to secure anyoneโs place in rock history.
But Brian didnโt just write hits. He wrote songs that became part of global culture.
You donโt merely listen to We Will Rock You.
You stomp it.
You clap it.
You hear it at football grounds, arenas, festivals and sporting events across the planet.
Two stomps and a clap. Thatโs all it takes.
Brian May wrote one of the most instantly recognisable rhythms ever created, and somewhere right now, an entire stadium is probably doing it badly after several pints. ๐บ๐
๐ฅ A LIVE AID MOMENT FOR THE AGES
When Queen stepped onto the stage at Live Aid in 1985, they delivered what many consider the greatest live performance in rock history.
Freddie Mercury owned the crowd, but Brian Mayโs guitar work helped give the performance its thunder.
The band had only a short set, yet they managed to make Wembley Stadium feel like it belonged entirely to them.
That performance has been replayed, analysed, celebrated and copied countless times, but its magic remains untouchable.
Queen didnโt simply perform at Live Aid.
They conquered it.
Brian May was right there in the middle of the storm, Red Special in hand, hair flowing like some sort of cosmic rock wizard. โก๐งโโ๏ธ
๐ THE ROCK STAR WHO STUDIES THE STARS
Because being one of the greatest guitarists of all time apparently wasnโt enough, Brian May is also a highly respected astrophysicist.
Yes, while the rest of us struggle to remember where we left the car keys, Brian has spent his life understanding the universe.
He completed his PhD in astrophysics decades after first beginning his studies, proving that it is never too late to return to something you love.
His scientific work, passion for space and involvement in major astronomical projects have made him a genuinely unique figure.
There arenโt many people who can discuss interplanetary dust in the afternoon and then casually play the Bohemian Rhapsody solo in the evening.
That is an outrageously unfair amount of talent for one human being.
Leave some for the rest of us, Brian. ๐๐
๐ฆ A PASSIONATE VOICE FOR ANIMALS
Away from music and science, Brian has become a committed campaigner for animal welfare.
Through his work and public advocacy, he has repeatedly spoken up for wildlife and supported efforts to protect animals from cruelty.
His dedication has shown that behind the giant riffs and stadium anthems is a man with enormous compassion.
He may be a knight of the realm, a rock icon and a scientist, but Brian has always used his platform to fight for causes he believes in.
Thatโs not just rock royalty.
Thatโs proper class. โค๏ธ
๐ค KEEPING QUEENโS LEGACY ALIVE
Decades after Queen first took over the world, the bandโs music remains everywhere.
New generations continue to discover their albums.
Crowds still sing every word.
Films, documentaries, tribute shows and massive tours have kept Queenโs legacy alive, but the songs have never really gone away.
Brian May and Roger Taylor have continued performing Queenโs music around the world, ensuring those extraordinary songs still receive the full arena-sized treatment they deserve.
There is something truly special about seeing Brian step forward beneath the lights, lift the Red Special and play a solo heard by millions for generations.
The sound begins, the crowd erupts, and suddenly rock history feels completely alive.
๐ถ A LEGACY WRITTEN IN RIFFS
Brian Mayโs influence stretches far beyond Queen.
Countless guitarists have tried to recreate his tone.
Bands have borrowed his layered harmonies.
Songwriters have studied his arrangements.
Performers have watched Queenโs concerts and learned what it means to make a stadium feel like the smallest, loudest pub gig on Earth.
Yet nobody has ever sounded exactly like him.
That is the mark of a true original.
Brian May didnโt follow a path laid down by somebody else.
He built his own guitar, created his own sound and helped form one of the greatest bands the world has ever seen.
Not bad for a lad armed with six strings, a sixpence and hair that has apparently defeated the ageing process entirely. ๐ธ๐
