AMON AMARTH are preparing to unleash their next studio album, The Allfather Awakens, and according to members of the Swedish melodic death metal giants, the recording process proved remarkably straightforward — with the band describing the sessions as “very smooth sailing.”

For a band whose songs regularly involve Vikings, bloodshed, burning villages, Norse gods and enough battle imagery to make your average history teacher nervous, it appears the actual creation of the new record involved considerably less warfare.

AMON AMARTH are gearing up for another chapter with The Allfather Awakens, their latest full-length assault of melodic death metal.

And while the finished record promises all the thunderous guitars, pounding drums and unmistakable Viking atmosphere fans expect, behind the scenes things apparently came together without too much drama.

Sometimes the gods smile upon the studio.

⚔️ ‘It Was Very Smooth Sailing’

Members of AMON AMARTH have been discussing how The Allfather Awakens came together, describing the recording experience as unusually comfortable and efficient.

Their assessment?

“It was very smooth sailing.”

Considering the amount of work involved in making a modern metal album — writing, arranging, rehearsing, recording guitars, bass, drums, vocals, editing, mixing and inevitably listening to the same snare hit approximately nine thousand times — smooth sailing is probably the best outcome any band could hope for.

Particularly one so fond of boats.

Very on brand, lads.

🎸 Experience Clearly Makes A Difference

AMON AMARTH are hardly newcomers figuring out how a recording studio works.

After decades together and a catalogue stretching across numerous albums, the band have developed an extremely clear understanding of their musical identity.

They know what an AMON AMARTH riff should feel like.

They know where Johan Hegg’s colossal roar needs to sit.

They know when a melody needs room.

And they certainly know when a song requires enough double-kick drumming to launch a longship across the North Sea.

That experience can make the creative process considerably more focused.

Rather than spending weeks wondering what sort of band they’re supposed to be, AMON AMARTH can concentrate on making the strongest version of the music they already understand instinctively.

🔥 The Allfather Awakens Is A Very AMON AMARTH Title

And then there’s that album title.

The Allfather Awakens.

Subtle?

Absolutely not.

Perfect for AMON AMARTH?

Completely.

The Allfather is, of course, a title closely associated with Odin, the central figure of Norse mythology who has appeared throughout countless stories involving wisdom, war, death, magic and prophecy.

In other words:

Exactly the sort of bloke likely to turn up somewhere inside an AMON AMARTH song.

The title immediately suggests the band are diving straight back into the mythological world that has helped define their music for decades.

🐦‍⬛ Odin And AMON AMARTH Are Natural Companions

Norse mythology has always been one of the band’s greatest creative playgrounds.

Rather than simply sticking Viking imagery onto album covers, AMON AMARTH have repeatedly drawn from sagas, mythology and Scandinavian history to build entire songs around gods, warriors, voyages and battles.

Odin sits naturally at the centre of that universe.

He is simultaneously associated with knowledge and warfare.

A seeker of wisdom.

A god of the dead.

A figure accompanied by ravens.

And somebody willing to make fairly extreme sacrifices for knowledge.

Heavy metal hardly needs to exaggerate any of that.

The mythology arrived metal enough already.

💀 AMON AMARTH Have Built One Of Metal’s Most Recognisable Sounds

Plenty of bands play melodic death metal.

Very few sound immediately like AMON AMARTH.

Those enormous harmonised guitar lines.

The galloping rhythms.

The combination of brutality and melody.

And, towering above everything, Johan Hegg’s unmistakable growl.

You can often identify an AMON AMARTH track within seconds.

That consistency has been one of their greatest strengths.

They’ve evolved their production and expanded their songwriting over the years, but they’ve never become embarrassed about the basic reason people fell in love with the band.

Big riffs.

Huge melodies.

Viking stories.

Headbanging.

Job done.

🛡️ They’ve Never Needed To Chase Trends

Another reason AMON AMARTH have endured is that they don’t seem particularly interested in whatever happens to be fashionable.

Metal trends have shifted repeatedly during their career.

Nu metal exploded.

Metalcore dominated.

Deathcore emerged.

Djent happened.

Progressive metal expanded.

Social media began turning thirty-second song clips into marketing strategies.

AMON AMARTH?

Still writing songs that sound like an army of Vikings has discovered electricity.

There’s something wonderfully reassuring about that.

🎶 But Consistency Doesn’t Mean Repetition

Of course, maintaining a recognisable identity doesn’t mean simply recording the same album forever.

AMON AMARTH have gradually broadened their approach over the years.

Some songs lean harder into classic heavy metal.

Others emphasise death-metal aggression.

Some become almost anthemic enough for entire festival fields to sing along.

And the band’s increasingly huge live production has influenced the scale of the music itself.

You can hear songs designed to work in front of thousands of people.

That doesn’t necessarily mean simplifying everything.

It means understanding where the massive moments need to land.

🌊 A Smooth Recording Process Can Be A Very Good Sign

When musicians describe recording as difficult, tortured or chaotic, there is a strange temptation to assume that means the resulting album will somehow be more meaningful.

Rock mythology loves suffering.

But sometimes things simply work.

The musicians are prepared.

The songs are strong.

Everyone knows what they’re doing.

The performances come together.

And nobody needs to throw a guitar through the control-room window.

That’s not boring.

That’s professionalism.

If AMON AMARTH felt the sessions flowed naturally, it suggests the band entered the studio with a strong understanding of the record they wanted to make.

🤘 These Songs Will Eventually Have To Survive The Live Test

For AMON AMARTH, studio recordings are only half the job.

Eventually these songs need to work live.

And AMON AMARTH concerts aren’t exactly intimate acoustic evenings.

Their shows have become full-scale metal spectacles.

Viking imagery.

Giant stage pieces.

Fire.

Battle scenes.

Massive lighting.

And, occasionally, entire crowds sitting down and pretending they’re rowing boats.

Yes.

Metal audiences voluntarily became human oarsmen.

Somewhere Odin is probably confused but supportive.

Any material from The Allfather Awakens will eventually need to stand beside songs that already generate enormous reactions from festival crowds.

That’s a serious test.

🚣 The Rowing Pit Still Makes Absolutely No Sense — And We Love It

We have to talk about it.

Most metal bands produce circle pits.

AMON AMARTH somehow convinced audiences to sit on the floor and row.

Thousands of people.

Moving backwards and forwards.

Together.

Like the world’s most heavily tattooed exercise class.

It should be ridiculous.

It is ridiculous.

It is also absolutely brilliant.

That sense of communal fun is something AMON AMARTH have mastered particularly well.

Their subject matter might involve death, gods and warfare, but their concerts often feel like giant celebrations.

🎸 The Guitar Work Remains Central

Strip away the Viking ships, pyro and mythology and you still need songs.

AMON AMARTH’s longevity ultimately comes down to guitar writing.

Those melodic leads give the music its emotional identity.

Without them, the band could easily become another straightforward death-metal act.

Instead, the guitars often carry melodies large enough to feel almost cinematic.

That contrast is essential.

Brutal vocals over heroic guitar lines.

Aggression paired with melody.

It’s the musical equivalent of watching somebody swing an axe while a sunset looks absolutely lovely behind them.

🔥 Following A Long And Successful Career

Every new AMON AMARTH album now arrives with the weight of an enormous back catalogue behind it.

Fans already have favourites.

Songs they’ve heard dozens of times live.

Albums connected to different periods of their lives.

That creates a challenge for any veteran band.

New material has to justify its existence.

Nobody wants a record that feels like an excuse to tour the classics again.

AMON AMARTH have generally avoided that trap by continuing to write albums designed to become part of their live identity rather than separate from it.

The Allfather Awakens now gets its chance to join that lineage.

🖤 Heavy Metal And Mythology Remain Perfect Partners

There’s a reason mythology continues appearing throughout metal.

It gives musicians enormous emotional territory.

Heroism.

Death.

Sacrifice.

Fear.

Destiny.

Revenge.

Gods behaving badly.

Humans behaving worse.

And dramatic weather.

Lots of dramatic weather.

Norse mythology in particular fits heavy music beautifully because its stories frequently contain a sense of inevitability.

Even the gods know that Ragnarök is coming.

They fight anyway.

You don’t need much imagination to hear a distorted guitar underneath that concept.

⚔️ The Allfather Awakens Sounds Like AMON AMARTH Entering Another Battle

What makes the band’s comments about the recording process encouraging is the apparent confidence behind them.

No crisis.

No suggestion they struggled for direction.

No indication that everybody spent six months arguing about whether track four needed another tambourine.

Just a band working efficiently and getting the album made.

After so many years together, that kind of creative chemistry isn’t guaranteed.

Plenty of long-running groups eventually find the studio becoming harder rather than easier.

AMON AMARTH apparently experienced the opposite.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

If The Allfather Awakens was recorded with the confidence suggested by the band’s comments, AMON AMARTH could be preparing another seriously formidable addition to their catalogue.

“Very smooth sailing” might sound almost suspiciously calm for a record presumably filled with Viking warfare, but it’s exactly what you want to hear from musicians this experienced.

The band know who they are.

They know what their fans expect.

And, crucially, they still seem enthusiastic about finding new songs within that unmistakable AMON AMARTH world.

Now comes the fun bit.

Hearing what all that smooth sailing actually produced.

Because sooner or later, The Allfather Awakens will leave the studio and head towards the stage.

And when those new riffs finally arrive live?

Prepare the longships.

Prepare the horns.

And apparently prepare to sit on the bloody floor and row.

The Allfather is awakening. ⚔️🔥🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
