Singer, songwriter and vocal powerhouse Amanda Somerville — known for her work with projects including Avantasia, Kiske/Somerville, Trillium and Exit Eden, as well as her long association with EPICA — has revealed that she has been diagnosed with what she described as a “malignant and aggressive brain tumor.”

This is one of those stories where the music takes a back seat.

Somerville has spent decades building a remarkable career across the rock, metal and symphonic worlds, lending her voice to albums, tours and collaborations with some of the scene’s biggest names.

Now, however, she faces a battle considerably more important than anything that happens on a stage.

🖤 Amanda Somerville Shares Serious Health Diagnosis

Somerville has revealed that doctors have diagnosed her with a malignant and aggressive brain tumor.

Those words alone carry enormous weight.

At this stage, the important thing is not to speculate beyond what Somerville herself has chosen to make public.

Details surrounding the exact type of tumour, treatment plan and longer-term outlook should remain hers to share when — and if — she wishes.

For fans, friends and fellow musicians, the focus is understandably on supporting Amanda and her family through what will undoubtedly be an incredibly difficult period.

🎤 A Voice Familiar Across The Metal World

Amanda Somerville’s career is unusual in the best possible way.

She has never been confined to one band.

Instead, her voice has appeared across a remarkable number of projects spanning symphonic metal, power metal, progressive music, melodic rock and hard rock.

Even listeners who don’t immediately recognise the name may very well have heard her somewhere.

Her work has placed her alongside some of the biggest names in European metal.

🌹 Her Long Connection With EPICA

Somerville has had a particularly strong relationship with EPICA.

She has worked with the Dutch symphonic-metal giants in several capacities over the years, including studio contributions and live appearances.

She has also stepped into major performance situations when required, becoming a trusted part of the wider EPICA musical family.

That relationship introduced her voice to countless symphonic-metal fans around the world.

But EPICA represents only one part of the story.

🔥 Taking The Stage With Avantasia

Somerville has also toured extensively with Tobias Sammet’s Avantasia, one of power and symphonic metal’s most spectacular collaborative projects.

Avantasia shows routinely bring together an almost absurd collection of vocal talent.

Multiple singers.

Multiple generations.

Different styles.

Huge productions.

And songs that often sound as though somebody attempted to squeeze an entire fantasy film into eight minutes.

Somerville fit naturally into that environment.

Her combination of power, control and theatrical presence made her a hugely valuable part of Avantasia’s live world.

⚡ Kiske/Somerville

One of Somerville’s most prominent collaborations came alongside legendary Helloween vocalist Michael Kiske.

The pair formed Kiske/Somerville, combining two extremely distinctive voices within melodic hard rock and metal.

The project released Kiske/Somerville in 2010 and later returned with City Of Heroes in 2015.

Putting Kiske and Somerville together made immediate sense.

Both are capable of enormous melodic performances, but their voices have sufficiently different colours to create genuine contrast.

It was never simply two singers trying to out-sing each other.

It was about chemistry.

🌑 Trillium Gave Somerville Her Own Heavy-Music Platform

Somerville also created Trillium, giving her another outlet for her songwriting and heavier musical instincts.

Rather than simply appearing as a guest vocalist, Trillium allowed her to place her own creative identity at the centre.

The project reinforced something fans had understood for years:

Amanda Somerville wasn’t simply a hired voice.

She was a songwriter and artist with her own musical perspective.

🖤 Exit Eden Brought Another Side Of Her Voice Forward

Then came Exit Eden.

The symphonic-metal project built around multiple female vocalists became known for transforming songs from outside the metal world into enormous orchestral rock arrangements.

Pop songs suddenly grew guitars.

Dance tracks developed dramatic strings.

Everything became approximately 400% more theatrical.

Somerville’s voice became another crucial part of that sound.

It also demonstrated her versatility.

She could move between delicate melodic passages and full-scale symphonic-metal power without losing her own identity.

🎶 Much More Than A Metal Singer

Amanda Somerville has always been difficult to categorise neatly.

Yes, she is strongly associated with metal.

But her background stretches across considerably more musical territory.

Singer.

Songwriter.

Vocal coach.

Producer.

Collaborator.

Session musician.

Her ability to move between musical worlds has made her invaluable to countless projects over the years.

Some musicians build their career around one band.

Somerville built hers around connection.

Different artists.

Different records.

Different stages.

Different musical worlds.

❤️ The Metal Community Responds When One Of Its Own Needs Support

Heavy music can occasionally appear intimidating from the outside.

Black shirts.

Screaming.

Fire.

Skulls everywhere.

But anybody who has spent real time inside the rock and metal community knows how quickly that exterior disappears when somebody needs help.

Fans rally.

Musicians rally.

Bands share messages.

People who have never met one another suddenly feel connected because the same records mattered to them.

Somerville’s diagnosis is the sort of news that reaches far beyond individual fanbases.

EPICA listeners know her.

Avantasia fans know her.

Helloween fans know her.

Symphonic-metal fans know her.

Melodic-rock fans know her.

Her career has touched enormous parts of the scene.

🧠 Brain Tumours Are Serious Medical Conditions

The phrase “malignant and aggressive brain tumor” understandably sounds frightening.

And it is a serious diagnosis.

But beyond acknowledging that seriousness, speculation isn’t helpful.

Brain tumours can differ enormously depending on their type, location, grade and individual circumstances.

Only Somerville and her medical team know the complete picture.

So rather than trying to interpret incomplete information, the respectful approach is simple:

Listen to what Amanda chooses to share.

Give her space when she needs it.

Support her when she asks for it.

🖤 Family Comes Before Music

For fans, the instinct is naturally to wonder what this means for future records, appearances or touring.

But those questions can wait.

Health comes first.

Family comes first.

Everything else is secondary.

Tours can be rescheduled.

Albums can wait.

Stages will still be there.

Right now, Amanda Somerville needs the opportunity to focus on herself and the people closest to her.

🎤 Decades Of Music Have Already Made An Impact

Whatever comes next, Somerville’s musical contribution is already substantial.

She has performed on major stages.

Appeared across numerous records.

Worked with internationally recognised musicians.

Helped bring projects to life both in studios and on tour.

And built a reputation as one of the most versatile voices operating around the European rock and metal scene.

That doesn’t disappear because touring stops.

Music has a habit of staying with people long after the performance itself ends.

🌹 EPICA And Avantasia Fans Know Exactly What She Brings

Anyone who has watched Somerville perform alongside major symphonic and power-metal acts understands why musicians repeatedly wanted her involved.

She brings more than technical ability.

There’s professionalism.

Presence.

Adaptability.

The ability to fit inside somebody else’s musical world without disappearing inside it.

That combination is rare.

And it’s why her career has crossed so many different projects.

🤘 The Entire Rock And Metal Community Will Be Rooting For Her

There are moments when competition between bands, genres and fanbases suddenly feels completely irrelevant.

This is one of them.

Whether you discovered Amanda Somerville through EPICA, Avantasia, Kiske/Somerville, Trillium, Exit Eden or somewhere else entirely, the reaction will be much the same.

Shock.

Concern.

And enormous goodwill.

🖤 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

There isn’t much clever to say about news like this.

Amanda Somerville has spent years giving her voice to music that has meant an enormous amount to rock and metal fans around the world.

Now she’s facing something far bigger than music.

A diagnosis of a malignant and aggressive brain tumor is frightening, and the months ahead may involve challenges that nobody outside Amanda’s immediate circle can fully understand.

So this isn’t the moment for speculation.

It’s the moment for support.

For respecting her privacy.

For listening when she wants to speak.

And for reminding her just how many people across the rock and metal world are standing behind her.

From everyone at The Riff Report Blog, our thoughts are with Amanda Somerville, her family, friends and loved ones.

Amanda — the metal community is with you. 🖤🤘
