At the 2026 Grammy Awards, no less. About time, mun. About. Bloody. Time.
After a career that helped invent alternative music as we know it, inspired everyone from goth kids to indie sadboys, and proved that melancholy can be both massive and magnificent, The Cure walked away with two major wins:
- Best Alternative Music Performance for the devastating slow-burn epic Alone
- Best Alternative Music Album for the towering late-career triumph Songs of a Lost World
Yes. Their first Grammys. Ever. Let that roll around your skull for a bit. 🖤
FORTY YEARS OF SADNESS, FINALLY REWARDED 🌑
This isn’t some nostalgia nod or polite “lifetime achievement” pat on the back. This is the Grammys finally admitting what fans have known since Disintegration ruined their emotional stability: The Cure still matter. Hugely.
Songs of a Lost World isn’t a band chasing relevance or trying to squeeze onto a playlist called Sad Indie Vibes Vol. 47. It’s The Cure doing what they’ve always done — making music that feels like standing alone at 2am with your thoughts, your memories, and the quiet realisation that time is undefeated.
And Alone? That track hits like fog rolling in off the Severn at night. Slow. Heavy. Unavoidable. It’s not flashy, it doesn’t beg for attention — it just exists, looming and powerful, daring you to feel something.
ROBERT SMITH: STILL KING OF THE BEAUTIFUL MISERABLE 🖤👑
Let’s be honest — Robert Smith accepting a Grammy feels slightly surreal. This is a man who built a career on emotional honesty, outsider art, and doing things his own way, now holding the industry’s shiniest gold trophy while looking like he’d rather be anywhere else. Perfect. No notes.
The Cure never needed awards to validate them. Their influence is already carved into the DNA of alternative music — from post-punk and goth to shoegaze, indie, emo, and beyond. But there’s something deeply satisfying about seeing the establishment finally catch up.
NOT A COMEBACK — A STATEMENT 💀🎶
What makes this win hit harder is that it proves The Cure aren’t just surviving — they’re still creating work that stands shoulder to shoulder with anything in modern alternative music. No gimmicks. No nostalgia bait. Just atmosphere, honesty, and emotional weight.
This is a band decades deep into their career dropping an album that feels urgent, relevant, and utterly uncompromising.
That’s rare. That’s special. That’s Grammy-worthy — even if it took the Academy several decades to realise it.
THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT 🤘
The Cure winning their first Grammys in 2026 isn’t just overdue — it’s poetic.
The kings of beautiful misery finally getting their flowers while still standing in the shadows.
Black clothes. Heavy hearts. Gold trophies.
Only took them forty-odd years, mun.
Proper job. 🖤🔥
