Today marks one year since the world lost one of the most important, influential and unmistakable voices in rock and heavy metal history.
Ozzy Osbourne passed away at the age of 76, leaving behind a career that did far more than entertain millions of people. He helped reshape the entire sound, image and attitude of heavy music.
For more than five decades, Ozzy stood at the centre of rockโs loudest, strangest and most unforgettable moments. He was the voice of Black Sabbath, a solo superstar, a television personality, a festival founder and one of the most recognisable figures popular culture has ever produced.
But above everything else, he was Ozzy.
There was nobody else quite like him.
The Voice That Helped Create Heavy Metal
When Black Sabbath emerged from Birmingham at the end of the 1960s, the musical landscape changed forever.
The combination of Tony Iommiโs crushing guitar riffs, Geezer Butlerโs dark lyrics, Bill Wardโs thunderous drumming and Ozzyโs haunting vocals created something that sounded dangerous, unsettling and completely new.
Their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath, arrived in 1970 and helped lay the foundations for what would become heavy metal.

Those achievements alone would be enough to secure anyoneโs place in music history.
But Ozzyโs true impact cannot be measured by record sales, trophies or chart positions.
His influence can be heard in generations of musicians.
Metallica, Slipknot, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Ghost and countless others have all existed within a world that Black Sabbath and Ozzy helped create.
Every crushing riff, dark lyric and theatrical metal performance carries at least a little of that original Sabbath spirit.
The Wild Man of Rock
Ozzyโs career was never short of chaos.
His life became surrounded by legendary stories, outrageous behaviour and moments that seemed almost impossible to believe.
There were wild tours, infamous incidents and enough rock and roll madness to fill several books.
Yet beneath the headlines was a man with an incredible sense of humour, a deep love for his family and a genuine connection with his fans.
That softer and funnier side of Ozzy became known to millions through The Osbournes.
The reality television series turned the Osbourne family into household names and introduced Ozzy to an entirely new audience.
Suddenly, the Prince of Darkness was not only known as the terrifying frontman of Black Sabbath.
He was also the confused, loveable dad wandering around the house, shouting for Sharon and trying to understand how the television remote worked.

Despite everything, his desire to return to the stage never disappeared.
Ozzy repeatedly spoke about wanting to perform again and say a proper goodbye to the fans who had supported him throughout his career.
