Well then.

MTV has managed to kick the hornetโ€™s nest, throw the hornetโ€™s nest into the pit, and then wonder why everyone wearing a battle jacket looks annoyed. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ˜‚

The nominations for the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards have arrived โ€” but one familiar category is conspicuous by its absence.

๐ŸŽธ BEST ROCK IS GONE

Yep.

The Best Rock category has been dropped from the 2026 VMAs after being part of the awards in various forms for more than three decades.

And considering this is the MTV Video Music Awards โ€” an institution whose history is absolutely soaked in guitars, leather trousers, hairspray, smashed instruments and musicians doing things television executives probably wished they hadnโ€™t โ€” it feels like one hell of a decision.

Rock hasnโ€™t disappeared.

Rock hasnโ€™t stopped selling tickets.

Rock hasnโ€™t stopped filling festivals.

And it certainly hasnโ€™t stopped producing music videos.

So naturally, the rock community is asking:

What the bloody hell is occurring, mun?! ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ“บ ROCK AND MTV USED TO GO HAND-IN-HAND

There was a time when saying MTV immediately made you think about music videos.

Mad concept, we know.

For generations of music fans, MTV helped turn bands into global superstars.

The channel became synonymous with huge videos, outrageous personalities and artists who understood that three or four minutes of television could change their careers overnight.

Rock played a gigantic role in that history.

Think about the artists who became inseparable from the MTV era.

Bon Jovi.

Guns Nโ€™ Roses.

Aerosmith.

Nirvana.

Green Day.

Foo Fighters.

Metallica.

Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Linkin Park.

The relationship between rock music and MTV wasnโ€™t some little side story.

It was part of the bloody furniture.

๐Ÿ† LAST YEARโ€™S CATEGORY WAS STACKED

The decision becomes even stranger when you look at the 2025 Best Rock nominees.

The category included:

  • ๐ŸŽธ Coldplay โ€” โ€œAll My Loveโ€
  • ๐Ÿ–ค Evanescence โ€” โ€œAfterlifeโ€
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Green Day โ€” โ€œOne Eyed Bastardโ€
  • ๐ŸŽค Lenny Kravitz โ€” โ€œHoneyโ€
  • ๐Ÿค˜ Linkin Park โ€” โ€œThe Emptiness Machineโ€
  • โšก Twenty One Pilots โ€” โ€œThe Contractโ€

Thatโ€™s hardly evidence of a genre gasping for air.

Youโ€™ve got veteran stadium giants alongside bands still commanding enormous modern audiences.

Then 2026 rolls around andโ€ฆ

Best Rock has vanished.

Poof.

Gone.

Someoneโ€™s apparently unplugged the Marshall stack and wheeled it out the back door. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿค” SO WHERE DOES ROCK GO NOW?

MTV hasnโ€™t abandoned guitar-based music completely.

The Best Alternative category remains part of the 2026 awards.

But hereโ€™s where things become messy.

Rock and alternative obviously overlap.

They always have.

But theyโ€™re not automatically the same thing.

Trying to shove the enormous modern rock landscape underneath one broad alternative umbrella feels a little like replacing the beer tent at Download with a bloke carrying a six-pack and saying:

โ€œBasically the same thing, lads.โ€

No.

No it bloody isnโ€™t. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿบ

Rock in 2026 stretches across everything from classic rock and punk to indie rock, hard rock, post-hardcore, alternative rock, metal-adjacent acts and bands experimenting with electronic and pop influences.

The scene is absolutely enormous.

๐ŸŽต THE 2026 BEST ALTERNATIVE CATEGORY

Among the artists appearing in the Alternative conversation this year is Olivia Rodrigo, whose track โ€œThe Cureโ€ has landed a Best Alternative nomination.

Tame Impalaโ€™s โ€œDraculaโ€ is also among the songs competing in the category.

And thatโ€™s precisely where the debate gets interesting.

Because once Best Rock disappears, Alternative suddenly has an enormous amount of territory potentially dumped onto its shoulders.

What happens to bands that are clearly rock but donโ€™t comfortably fit MTVโ€™s idea of alternative?

Where does hard rock go?

Where does punk go?

Where do heavier guitar bands go?

Do they simply disappear from the VMAs unless theyโ€™re massive enough to break into one of the general categories?

Thatโ€™s the bit rock fans should be watching.

๐Ÿค˜ ROCK IN 2026 ISNโ€™T DEAD โ€” NOT EVEN CLOSE

The timing feels particularly strange because guitar music isnโ€™t exactly hiding in somebodyโ€™s garage.

Look around.

Download Festival continues attracting enormous crowds.

Bloodstock remains one of Britainโ€™s great celebrations of heavy music.

Wacken Open Air turns a German village into the capital of heavy metal every summer.

Bands like Linkin Park, Sleep Token, Ghost, Turnstile, YUNGBLUD, Deftones, Bring Me The Horizon and countless others are demonstrating just how broad the modern rock and alternative landscape has become.

Legacy bands continue packing stadiums.

Young fans are discovering older bands through streaming, TikTok, films, television programmes and festival appearances.

Vinyl continues thriving.

Band shirts are everywhere.

Guitar music keeps reinventing itself.

The idea that rock somehow doesnโ€™t deserve its own category because it isnโ€™t culturally relevant anymore simply doesnโ€™t stack up.

๐Ÿ”ฅ THE GRAMMYS CERTAINLY HAVENโ€™T GIVEN UP ON ROCK

You only need to glance at the 2026 Grammy Awards to see how seriously other major institutions are still treating guitar music.

The Grammys maintained dedicated categories including:

Best Rock Performance

Best Metal Performance

Best Rock Song

Best Rock Album

Best Alternative Music Performance

Best Alternative Music Album

Thatโ€™s six separate categories recognising different corners of the guitar-driven universe.

Meanwhile MTV has apparently looked at Rock and Alternative and thought:

โ€œAhhh, chuck it all in one drawer. Itโ€™ll be tidy.โ€

Absolutely not, butt. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐ŸŒ™ THE VMAs ARE STILL MASSIVE

None of this means the 2026 VMAs are suddenly irrelevant.

Far from it.

The nominations announced on 18 August 2026 are headed by Madonna, who has picked up a whopping 11 nominations.

Taylor Swift follows with nine, while Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have collected seven nominations each.

The ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on Sunday, 27 September 2026, with the show broadcast across MTV, CBS and Paramount+ in the United States.

There are huge artists involved.

There will undoubtedly be enormous performances.

Thereโ€™ll probably be at least one celebrity reaction shot turned into a meme before the first advert break.

Itโ€™s the VMAs.

Chaos is basically contractual. ๐Ÿ˜‚

But thatโ€™s exactly why losing Best Rock matters.

๐ŸŽธ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Weโ€™re obviously slightly biased here.

The clue is literally in our name.

The RIFF Report.

Weโ€™re unlikely to celebrate someone removing the riff category. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค˜

But this isnโ€™t about demanding that rock dominate every awards ceremony.

Pop deserves recognition.

Hip-hop deserves recognition.

R&B deserves recognition.

Country deserves recognition.

K-pop deserves recognition.

Alternative deserves recognition.

Dance deserves recognition.

And rock deserves recognition too.

Simple as that.

Rock music helped build MTV.

Some of the most iconic images in MTV history involve guitar bands.

Some of the biggest VMA performances ever came from rock artists.

And generations of viewers discovered bands because MTV stuck their videos on television.

Removing Best Rock doesnโ€™t kill rock music.

Not even remotely.

The bands will continue touring.

Festivals will continue selling tickets.

Fans will continue forming pits.

Kids will continue buying their first guitars.

And somewhere in Wales, somebody will still be standing halfway up a mountain in horizontal rain watching a band absolutely smash it while holding a pint thatโ€™s slowly becoming 40% rainwater.

Thatโ€™s rock โ€˜nโ€™ roll, mun. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ˜‚

MTV can remove the category.

They canโ€™t remove the riffs.

๐Ÿ’ฌ WHAT DO YOU RECK?

Was MTV right to drop Best Rock from the 2026 VMAs?

Should Rock and Alternative simply be combined?

Or should MTV bring Best Rock straight back for 2027?

Sound off, butt. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ”ฅ

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿค˜
