Sometimes the song a band isnโ€™t convinced about ends up becoming the one that follows them around for the rest of their career.

For Hoobastank, that song was โ€œThe Reasonโ€. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

It became an absolutely massive early-2000s rock anthem, dominated radio, earned Grammy nominations and eventually smashed through the one-billion-view mark on YouTube.

Yet according to the story surrounding its release, Hoobastank werenโ€™t exactly banging on the record labelโ€™s door demanding it become a single.

Quite the opposite.

And if their original instincts had won the argument, one of the defining alternative-rock songs of the 2000s might have had a very different story.

๐ŸŽค โ€œThe Reasonโ€ Nearly Wasnโ€™t A Single

Released on Hoobastankโ€™s second studio album, also titled The Reason, in 2003, the song represented something considerably softer and more emotional than much of the bandโ€™s heavier alternative-rock material.

The band reportedly werenโ€™t initially keen on releasing it as a single.

Their label, Island Def Jam, apparently saw something they didnโ€™t.

After pressure from the label, Hoobastank eventually agreed to release the track โ€” and bloody hell, mun, that turned out to be quite an important decision.

Because โ€œThe Reasonโ€ didnโ€™t merely perform well.

It went stratospheric. ๐Ÿš€

Suddenly Hoobastank werenโ€™t simply another name riding the enormous alternative-rock wave of the early 2000s.

They had a song being played everywhere.

Radio.

Music television.

Rock stations.

Pop stations.

School discos.

Car stereos.

And probably somebodyโ€™s Nokia ringtone while they were waiting outside Greggs.

You genuinely couldnโ€™t escape it.

๐ŸŽถ A Song Pieced Together From Old Ideas

One of the more fascinating parts of โ€œThe Reasonโ€ is apparently how naturally its lyrics came together.

Frontman Doug Robb later explained that the words were written during one sitting, but rather than appearing completely out of thin air, they incorporated unfinished verses and ideas he had accumulated previously.

That makes the finished song feel almost like several unfinished emotional thoughts finally finding the right home.

And perhaps thatโ€™s part of the reason it connected with so many people.

Thereโ€™s nothing ridiculously complicated about it.

Itโ€™s essentially an admission of imperfection, regret and wanting to become better because somebody matters to you.

Then comes that chorus.

You know the one.

Even if you havenโ€™t deliberately listened to Hoobastank for twenty years, thereโ€™s a very good chance your brain can immediately summon the melody.

Thatโ€™s the mark of a proper anthem.

๐Ÿ’Ž The Music Video Was Supposed To Be VERY Different

Then thereโ€™s the video.

Anyone who remembers the golden age of Kerrang!, MTV2 and music television will probably remember Hoobastankโ€™s video involving a jewel heist and a seemingly devastating car accident.

But apparently, that wasnโ€™t the original plan.

The first concept was reportedly considerably darker.

The band initially envisioned a Matrix-inspired bank robbery, but the concept was rejected by the label for being too violent.

So the idea was reworked.

Instead, we got the now-famous jewel robbery storyline.

The video begins with what appears to be a woman lying in the road following a horrific accident.

The band perform around the unfolding story while the remaining characters execute a jewellery-store robbery, before the whole thing reveals itself to be part of an elaborate plan.

Does it have much to do with the actual meaning of โ€œThe Reasonโ€?

Not particularly. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Does it scream 2000s music video?

Absolutely.

And we bloody love it.

๐Ÿ“บ Remember When Music Videos Were Mini-Movies?

This was the era when rock bands could apparently walk into a meeting and say:

โ€œRight, weโ€™ve got this emotional song about regret and becoming a better person.โ€

And somebody would respond:

โ€œLovely. Soโ€ฆ jewel robbery?โ€

Perfect. No notes.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค˜

But thatโ€™s also why videos from this period remain so memorable.

Music videos werenโ€™t merely footage of bands performing.

They were often strange little movies featuring car crashes, robberies, supernatural nonsense, bizarre storylines and absolutely enormous production budgets.

You might have had no clue what was happening.

But youโ€™d remember it.

๐Ÿš€ Then โ€œThe Reasonโ€ Became Absolutely MASSIVE

Once released as a single, any uncertainty about the song quickly disappeared.

โ€œThe Reasonโ€ became Hoobastankโ€™s breakthrough international hit and spent months on the Billboard Hot 100, eventually reaching No. 2 in the United States.

Think about that for a second.

A rock band reportedly hesitant about releasing a song suddenly found themselves sitting one position away from the top of Americaโ€™s biggest singles chart.

The track also earned Hoobastank two Grammy nominations, helping turn the band into one of the most recognisable names from that entire era of American alternative rock.

And the song refused to disappear.

Thatโ€™s perhaps the most impressive bit.

Plenty of enormous singles dominate for six months before gradually becoming nostalgic curiosities.

โ€œThe Reasonโ€ just kept going.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Then A Whole New Generation Found It

Two decades after its original release, โ€œThe Reasonโ€ achieved another ridiculous milestone.

In 2023, its official music video surpassed one billion views on YouTube.

ONE. BILLION.

Thatโ€™s not merely nostalgia from people who owned the album back in the day.

Thatโ€™s generation after generation discovering โ€” or rediscovering โ€” the song.

And thatโ€™s where the story gets particularly brilliant.

A track Hoobastank apparently werenโ€™t convinced should even become a single ultimately became the song most closely associated with them around the world.

Lifeโ€™s funny like that.

๐Ÿ’ฟ The Early 2000s Rock Explosion

โ€œThe Reasonโ€ also arrived during an absolutely fascinating period for rock music.

The early 2000s had everything happening simultaneously.

Nu metal was enormous.

Pop-punk was everywhere.

Post-grunge was dominating American radio.

Emo was preparing to explode into the mainstream.

MTV still mattered.

Physical albums were still shifting serious numbers.

And somewhere in the middle of all that beautiful chaos were Hoobastank.

The bandโ€™s self-titled debut had already introduced them to a substantial audience, particularly through tracks including โ€œCrawling in the Darkโ€ and โ€œRunning Awayโ€.

But โ€œThe Reasonโ€ pushed them into another universe entirely.

It was softer.

It was ridiculously accessible.

It could sit comfortably alongside rock bands while simultaneously appearing on mainstream pop radio.

And whether the band expected it or not, theyโ€™d created something capable of crossing musical boundaries.

โค๏ธ Why Does โ€œThe Reasonโ€ Still Work?

Strip away the massive chart success, the music video and all the early-2000s nostalgia and thereโ€™s still a remarkably simple explanation.

People understand the emotion.

Everyone has screwed something up.

Everyone has disappointed somebody.

Most people have experienced that moment where they wish theyโ€™d handled something differently.

โ€œThe Reasonโ€ taps directly into that feeling without burying it beneath complicated metaphors.

Itโ€™s vulnerable without becoming ridiculously complicated.

Add that instantly recognisable chorus and youโ€™ve got the ingredients for something capable of surviving far beyond the musical era that created it.

๐Ÿค˜ The Riff Report Verdict

Thereโ€™s something beautifully rock โ€™nโ€™ roll about the whole story.

Hoobastank reportedly didnโ€™t particularly want โ€œThe Reasonโ€ released as a single.

Their record label pushed for it.

The band eventually agreed.

The original video concept was rejected.

They replaced a Matrix-style bank robbery with a completely bonkers jewel-heist storyline.

The song went to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It earned Grammy nominations.

Then, twenty years later, the video crossed one billion YouTube views.

Not bad for a song that nearly didnโ€™t get its shot, eh? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ”ฅ

โ€œThe Reasonโ€ ultimately became bigger than one album, one chart run or even one era.

For millions of rock fans, those opening notes immediately transport you back to the early 2000s โ€” when MTV still played videos, rock bands could invade the pop charts and every music video apparently needed enough plot to qualify for its own Netflix series.

And somewhere out there, somebody who hasnโ€™t heard it for years has just read this article and immediately started singing the chorus in their head.

Youโ€™re welcome. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ๐ŸŽธ

๐ŸŽค What Do You Reckon?

Were you a Hoobastank fan when โ€œThe Reasonโ€ originally exploded, or did you discover the track years later?

And more importantlyโ€ฆ

Is โ€œThe Reasonโ€ an absolute 2000s rock classic?

Get involved and let us know.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ
