There are Metallica songs that make you want to headbang until your neck files a formal complaint.

There are Metallica songs that immediately summon visions of circle pits, denim battle jackets and somebody shouting “METALLICAAAA!” after approximately seven pints.

And then there’s “Nothing Else Matters.” 🖤🎸

One of the most recognisable songs Metallica have ever recorded began somewhere far more personal than the arenas, stadiums and festival fields it would eventually fill.

James Hetfield was initially nervous about even sharing it.

Yep.

One of the biggest metal ballads ever written could quite easily have remained a private piece of music rather than becoming part of Metallica’s legendary 1991 self-titled album — better known to practically everyone on Earth as The Black Album.

And the story behind it makes the song hit even harder.

🎸 A Different Side of James Hetfield

By the end of the 1980s, Metallica had built one hell of a reputation.

This was the band responsible for “Battery,” “Master of Puppets,” “Creeping Death,” “Damage, Inc.” and “Blackened.”

Subtlety wasn’t exactly the first word springing to mind.

Metallica were fast, aggressive and uncompromising — four blokes seemingly determined to batter heavy metal into increasingly enormous shapes.

Then Hetfield came up with something completely different.

“Nothing Else Matters” was intimate.

Melodic.

Exposed.

Instead of hiding behind a wall of down-picked riffs, Hetfield was allowing listeners into a considerably more vulnerable part of himself.

That made sharing it intimidating.

Speaking years later on The Howard Stern Show, Hetfield recalled how Metallica had cultivated a tough-guy image during the late ’80s and described “Nothing Else Matters” as coming from a particularly vulnerable place.

When drummer Lars Ulrich and producer Bob Rock responded positively to the song, it helped convince Hetfield that perhaps this deeply personal piece of music really did belong in Metallica.

And thank the metal gods they did. 🤘

🖤 From Private Song to Metallica Classic

“Nothing Else Matters” was eventually developed into one of the defining tracks on The Black Album.

Metallica officially credit James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich as the songwriters, while the finished studio recording also featured orchestration arranged by the late Michael Kamen.

That combination was hugely significant.

Metallica weren’t suddenly abandoning heaviness.

They were discovering that heaviness doesn’t always have to mean speed, distortion and aggression.

Sometimes vulnerability can hit harder than any riff.

That opening guitar figure is now instantly recognisable. You barely need a few notes before thousands of people know exactly what’s coming.

Then Hetfield’s vocal arrives, and suddenly a stadium containing tens of thousands of metalheads becomes one enormous choir.

Try witnessing that live without getting goosebumps.

Go on.

We dare you. 😈

🎸 And What About Kirk Hammett?

Another fascinating part of the recording is the unusual role — or lack of one — played by Kirk Hammett.

Although Hammett is obviously Metallica’s lead guitarist and responsible for some of the most famous solos in metal history, Hetfield performed the guitar parts on the original studio version of “Nothing Else Matters”.

It makes the recording feel even more connected to Hetfield.

This wasn’t simply James bringing an idea into rehearsal and watching Metallica turn it into something else.

The DNA of the finished recording remained deeply personal.

And considering how different the song appeared compared with Metallica’s earlier material, that’s important.

💥 Then The Black Album Changed EVERYTHING

When Metallica arrived in August 1991, the band’s world went absolutely bloody nuclear.

Produced by Bob Rock alongside Hetfield and Ulrich, the album took Metallica’s already enormous reputation and launched it into another dimension.

The record contained:

  • Enter Sandman
  • Sad But True
  • Holier Than Thou
  • The Unforgiven
  • Wherever I May Roam
  • Don’t Tread on Me
  • Through the Never
  • Nothing Else Matters
  • Of Wolf and Man
  • The God That Failed
  • My Friend of Misery
  • The Struggle Within

That is a ridiculous collection of songs.

The Black Album opened Metallica up to an audience far beyond the traditional thrash-metal faithful while maintaining enough sheer weight to ensure the band still sounded unmistakably like Metallica.

“Nothing Else Matters” became crucial to that expansion.

Here was a song your metalhead mate could love.

Your mum could love it.

Your dad could love it.

Your nan could probably have a crack at it after three sherries.

Yet somehow it still sounded completely authentic.

🎹 Then Elton John Made James Hetfield Emotional

Fast-forward three decades and the story gained another brilliant chapter.

During Metallica’s appearance on The Howard Stern Show in September 2021, they were joined by Miley Cyrus, while Sir Elton John appeared remotely.

Elton had contributed piano to Miley Cyrus’ version of “Nothing Else Matters”, recorded alongside musicians including Yo-Yo Ma, Chad Smith, Andrew Watt and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo for The Metallica Blacklist.

And Elton had something rather special to say.

He described “Nothing Else Matters” as “one of the best songs ever written”, praising its melody, chord structure and drama.

That’s not Dave from the pub telling you your band’s new tune is tidy after six lagers.

That’s Elton bloody John.

One of the most successful songwriters and performers in popular music history.

Hetfield was visibly emotional as Elton praised the song.

And when you know the history, it’s easy to understand why.

🖤 Think About That Journey…

A musician writes something personal.

He’s unsure whether it fits his band.

He’s nervous about exposing that side of himself.

The song gets accepted.

Metallica record it.

Millions of people hear it.

It becomes one of the band’s signature songs.

Decades later, Elton John sits there telling James Hetfield that he considers it one of the greatest songs ever written.

That’s one hell of a journey for a song that Hetfield wasn’t initially sure belonged in Metallica.

🔥 Metallica Proved Metal Could Be Vulnerable

“Nothing Else Matters” helped demonstrate something that heavy music fans already understood but the wider world sometimes struggled with:

Metal doesn’t have to be angry to be powerful.

It can be vulnerable.

It can be beautiful.

It can be uncomfortable.

It can be romantic.

It can hurt.

And it can still sound absolutely massive.

Metallica didn’t stop being Metallica because they recorded “Nothing Else Matters”.

If anything, the song expanded what Metallica were capable of being.

That influence can still be heard throughout rock and metal today, where bands can move from absolutely flattening an audience one minute to exposing their emotional guts the next.

Nobody needs to surrender their metal credentials because an acoustic guitar has appeared, mun. 😂🤘

🎤 More Than Three Decades Later…

The ultimate test of any song is whether people still care once the hype surrounding its release has disappeared.

“Nothing Else Matters” passed that test decades ago.

Metallica’s own live archive lists well over 1,300 performances of the song, and it remains a fixture capable of producing one of those special communal moments at a Metallica concert.

Thousands upon thousands of voices singing together.

Phone lights filling the stadium.

Hetfield standing behind the microphone.

And that unmistakable guitar introduction ringing through the night.

A song that once felt almost too personal to share ultimately became personal to millions of other people.

Maybe that’s the real magic of “Nothing Else Matters”.

James Hetfield opened the door just enough to let people see another side of him.

The world walked through it.

And more than three decades later, we’re still singing along.

So close, no matter how far. 🖤🤘

🤘 The Riff Report Verdict

“Nothing Else Matters” isn’t merely Metallica’s famous ballad.

It’s proof that sometimes the biggest creative risks come from dropping the armour.

Hetfield could have kept the song to himself.

Instead, Metallica embraced it, The Black Album became a landmark record, and “Nothing Else Matters” grew into one of rock and metal’s most enduring songs.

And if Sir Elton John reckons you’ve written one of the best songs ever?

Yeah…

That’s a pretty tidy endorsement, butt. 🤘🔥

What do you reckon? Is “Nothing Else Matters” Metallica’s greatest slower track, or does “Fade to Black”, “The Unforgiven” or “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” take the crown?

Drop your pick and prepare for the inevitable argument. 🍻🎸

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. 🤘🏴

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
