From blood in the sink and hospital warnings to sobriety, faith and one of rock’s most remarkable second acts — Alice Cooper’s survival story is every bit as dramatic as one of his stage shows.

Rock ’n’ roll history is absolutely stuffed with excess.

Booze. Drugs. Hotel rooms. Tour buses. Bad decisions made at four in the morning. 🍺🤘

For some musicians, those stories became funny anecdotes told decades later.

For others, they became epitaphs.

But Alice Cooper survived.

And considering just how deep his alcoholism became during the late 1970s and early 1980s, that survival remains one of the most extraordinary comeback stories in rock.

🎩 When The Character Took Over

By the 1970s, Alice Cooper had become one of the biggest — and most controversial — stars in rock.

Guillotines. Snakes. Blood. Electric chairs. Straightjackets.

Parents were horrified.

Teenagers bloody loved him.

Exactly as intended. 😈

Behind the theatrical madness, however, Vincent Furnier — the man who had legally taken the Alice Cooper name — was increasingly struggling with alcohol.

Drinking had become woven into the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle around him.

And eventually it stopped being a lifestyle.

It became dependency.

🍺 The Drinking Became Deadly

Cooper has spoken remarkably openly over the years about just how serious his alcoholism became.

This wasn’t simply somebody having a few too many after a gig.

His health was deteriorating.

He became frighteningly thin and has recalled reaching the point where he was vomiting blood.

His wife, Sheryl Goddard, witnessed the decline first-hand.

Eventually, the situation couldn’t continue.

Alice needed help.

🏥 The First Battle With Rehab

Cooper entered treatment for alcoholism in the late 1970s, an experience that would eventually inspire one of the strangest records of his career.

From the Inside, released in 1978, drew upon his experiences in a psychiatric hospital and the characters he encountered there.

For a while, things appeared to be moving in the right direction.

But addiction wasn’t finished with him.

Alice eventually returned to drinking, and the early 1980s became an extraordinarily dark period.

💀 The Albums Alice Barely Remembered

Between 1980 and 1983, Cooper released four studio albums:

  • Flush the Fashion — 1980
  • Special Forces — 1981
  • Zipper Catches Skin — 1982
  • DaDa — 1983

They’ve subsequently become known among fans as Alice’s infamous “blackout” period.

Cooper has said that his memories of recording parts of this era are extremely limited because of his alcoholism.

Just think about that for a second.

Imagine making entire bloody albums and later barely remembering doing it.

That’s not legendary rock excess.

That’s terrifying.

🩸 Blood In The Sink

Eventually, Cooper’s body was giving him warnings that couldn’t be ignored.

One particularly grim moment has become central to his story.

He has recalled vomiting blood and realising that something was seriously wrong.

This wasn’t stage blood.

There wasn’t a guillotine waiting in the wings or a theatrical execution coming next.

This was real life.

His drinking had reached the point where continuing down the same road could have killed him.

And rock history had already demonstrated exactly where that road could lead.

Jim Morrison had died at 27.

Jimi Hendrix had died at 27.

Keith Moon had died at 32.

Bon Scott had died at 33.

John Bonham had died at 32.

Rock ’n’ roll had already lost far too many people frighteningly young.

Alice Cooper could easily have become another name on that list.

❤️ Sheryl Cooper Refused To Watch Him Die

One of the most important people in Alice’s survival story was Sheryl.

The couple had married in 1976 after meeting when she performed as a dancer in Alice’s stage production.

But alcoholism put enormous strain on their marriage.

Eventually Sheryl took decisive action as Alice returned to treatment.

This time something changed.

Alice stopped drinking.

And unlike the first attempt at sobriety, it stuck.

✝️ Faith Became Part Of His Recovery

Alice has repeatedly credited his Christian faith as an important part of his sobriety.

It’s an interesting contradiction if you only know the bloke from the stage.

Here’s the man famous for singing “Welcome to My Nightmare”, getting his head chopped off every evening and wandering around stages covered in fake blood…

…talking openly about Christianity.

But that’s Alice Cooper.

The character onstage and the man away from it have always been two different things.

Cooper has described his recovery in spiritual terms and spoken about feeling that his desire for alcohol had been removed.

Whatever anyone personally believes about religion, there’s no denying the result:

Alice Cooper got sober.

And stayed sober.

That is the bit that matters. 🤘

🎸 Then Came The Comeback

After getting his health back, Alice Cooper didn’t quietly disappear into retirement.

Not a chance, butt.

He came roaring back.

Constrictor arrived in 1986 and helped launch Alice into a new era.

Then came Raise Your Fist and Yell in 1987.

And in 1989?

BOOM. 💥

Trash

Produced by Desmond Child, Trash became a massive commercial comeback and gave Alice one of the biggest hits of his entire career:

🎤 “Poison”

Suddenly Alice Cooper wasn’t merely a survivor from the 1970s.

He was a superstar again.

A new generation discovered the eyeliner, leather, horror theatrics and unmistakable voice.

The bloke who could easily have died only a few years earlier was filling arenas again.

That is some comeback.

🏌️ From Alcohol To Golf?!

There is another gloriously Alice Cooper twist to the story.

As drinking disappeared from his life, golf became one of his great passions.

Yes.

Alice Cooper.

The man responsible for fake executions, snakes, corpses, monsters and enough stage blood to keep Hammer Horror supplied until Christmas…

…became obsessed with golf. 😂🏌️‍♂️

He even titled his 2007 autobiography:

Alice Cooper, Golf Monster

You couldn’t make it up.

Actually, with Alice, you probably could.

🎤 Decades Of Sobriety — And Still Touring

Perhaps the greatest victory isn’t simply that Alice survived.

It’s what he did afterwards.

He rebuilt his career.

He rebuilt his health.

He continued recording.

He continued touring.

He became a father and grandfather.

He established the Solid Rock Teen Centers initiative in Arizona, helping young people through music, dance, arts and other activities.

And through it all, Alice Cooper remained gloriously Alice Cooper.

The guillotine stayed.

The eyeliner stayed.

The snakes stayed.

The nightmare stayed.

The alcohol didn’t.

⚠️ Rock ’n’ Roll Doesn’t Make Addiction Glamorous

There’s sometimes a tendency to romanticise the excess of classic rock.

We hear stories involving mountains of booze and hotel destruction and think:

“Bloody hell, those were the days!”

But Alice Cooper’s story shows the other side.

There isn’t anything glamorous about vomiting blood.

There isn’t anything cool about being unable to remember years of your own career.

There isn’t anything rock ’n’ roll about watching somebody slowly destroy themselves.

Alice survived long enough to tell the story.

Far too many others didn’t.

🖤 The Man Who Outlived The Nightmare

That’s what makes Alice Cooper’s story so powerful.

He didn’t need to stop being Alice.

He needed to separate Alice Cooper the theatrical monster from the real human being underneath the makeup.

The character could still be executed every night.

The man didn’t have to be.

🔥 Now THAT is rock ’n’ roll survival.

Alice Cooper’s career has lasted across generations, trends, genres and countless musical revolutions. Punk arrived. Metal exploded. Grunge changed everything. Nu metal came crashing through the door. Streaming replaced record shops.

And Alice?

Still here.

Still touring.

Still terrifying unsuspecting parents.

Still singing “School’s Out.”

Still welcoming us into his nightmare.

Only these days, when the curtain comes down, Alice Cooper walks away from the stage sober.

And after everything he went through, that might be the greatest encore of his entire career. 🤘🖤

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
