Cosmic Riffs, Heavy Grief, Monster Grooves And Donington Getting Swallowed Whole

Some bands play riffs.

Some bands build riffs.

Some bands politely hand you a riff, let you admire it, then move on to the chorus.

Mastodon do not do that.

Mastodon drag riffs out of a swamp, cover them in cosmic dust, weld them to a progressive metal engine, fire them through a sludge cannon and then ask Donington if everyone is still breathing.

Taking to the Opus Stage at Download Festival 2026 on Sunday evening, Mastodon brought exactly what the final day needed: weight, weirdness, history, emotion, technical fire and enough low-end heaviness to make the ground feel like it was considering early retirement.

This was not a flashy festival sugar rush.

This was not cartoon chaos.

This was not a set built around easy crowd commands and obvious singalong tricks.

This was Mastodon doing what Mastodon do best:

Big riffs.
Strange moods.
Massive drums.
Prog twists.
Sludge weight.
Cosmic atmosphere.
And songs that feel like ancient beasts climbing out of the earth with very complicated time signatures.

Proper savage, butt.

Sunday Evening Needed A Monster ๐Ÿ˜

By the time Mastodon arrived on the Opus Stage, Sunday had already been through a serious journey.

Ego Kill Talent had opened the day with Brazilian alt-metal groove.
Catch Your Breath had brought glossy emotional modern rock.
Mammoth had delivered classy riff-led power.
Dogstar had given Donington the Keanu Reeves alt-rock curveball.
thrown had battered the field with Swedish metalcore violence.
The Plot In You had turned heartbreak into breakdowns.
Social Distortion had brought old-school punk โ€™nโ€™ roll swagger.
Tom Morello had turned the stage into a riff revolution.

Then came Mastodon.

And suddenly the whole thing got heavier, stranger and more mythic.

This was the moment where the Opus Stage stopped feeling like a festival stage and started feeling like the entrance to some ancient underground temple guarded by a very angry creature with a double-kick pattern.

Mastodon do not simply fill a slot.

They change the temperature.

The mood darkened.
The riffs thickened.
The crowd leaned in.
The prog heads smiled knowingly.
The metalheads braced themselves.

Donington was about to get dragged into the deep.

The Setlist: Nine Songs, Absolute Weight โšก

Mastodonโ€™s reported Download Festival 2026 setlist was:

Tread Lightly
The Motherload
Your Ghost Again
Crystal Skull
Black Tongue
Megalodon
More Than I Could Chew
Crack the Skye
Blood and Thunder

That is a proper festival set, mun.

Nine songs.

No filler.

No casual little wander through the soft bits.

Just a smart, heavy, career-spanning blast that balanced newer emotional weight with classic Mastodon punishment.

It had groove.
It had prog.
It had sludge.
It had atmosphere.
It had fan favourites.
It had one of modern metalโ€™s most essential closing bangers.

For a 45-minute Opus Stage slot, this was tight and purposeful. Mastodon could have gone in endless directions with their catalogue, but this set felt built for impact. It gave Donington enough variety to show the bandโ€™s full beastly shape without losing the momentum.

A festival-sized Mastodon set needs to hit hard and move weird.

This did both.

โ€œTread Lightlyโ€ Opens The Portal ๐ŸŒŒ

Opening with โ€œTread Lightlyโ€ was a strong move.

It immediately threw the crowd into that grand, swirling Mastodon world where riffs do not just arrive โ€” they unfold. The song has that huge progressive sweep, the kind of opening that feels both heavy and slightly off-kilter, like the band are inviting everyone into a machine that may or may not have been designed by a wizard with a welding torch.

Live, it worked beautifully.

The guitars had weight.
The drums had that unmistakable Brann Dailor movement.
The vocals carried across the field.
The whole thing felt wide, strange and commanding.

This was not a band gently saying hello.

This was Mastodon opening the door and saying, โ€œRight, follow us if you dare.โ€

Donington followed.

Obviously.

This Band Still Sound Huge ๐Ÿ”Š

Mastodon are one of those bands where the sound has to land properly.

If the mix gets muddy, the detail disappears. If the guitars are too thin, the riffs lose their teeth. If the drums swallow everything, the songs become one massive rolling thundercloud.

On the Opus Stage, the band sounded properly weighty.

That mattered because Mastodonโ€™s music lives in the details as much as the impact. The riffs are massive, yes, but they also twist and curl around each other. The drums are powerful, yes, but they also dance, tumble and explode in ways most bands would not even attempt before breakfast.

Mastodon are heavy, but they are not simple.

That is their magic.

They can hit you in the chest and give your brain homework at the same time.

At Download, the chest got hit first.

The homework arrived shortly after.

โ€œThe Motherloadโ€ Gets Donington Moving ๐ŸŒ€

Then came โ€œThe Motherload,โ€ and the set got a proper lift.

This is one of Mastodonโ€™s most festival-friendly songs, and for good reason. It still has that signature weirdness, but there is a bounce and hook to it that makes the crowd move quickly. It is groovy, cheeky, heavy and strangely fun โ€” basically Mastodon proving they can write something catchy without sanding off the weird bits.

At Download, it landed brilliantly.

The crowd response lifted straight away. Heads started moving, hands came up, and that big rolling chorus gave the Opus field something to grab onto.

This was a smart early-set placement.

After โ€œTread Lightlyโ€ opened the cosmic gates, โ€œThe Motherloadโ€ pulled the wider crowd in with a bit more swagger. It reminded everyone that Mastodon are not just prog-metal scholars playing for people who own seven vinyl variants and a pedalboard spreadsheet.

They can groove.

They can move a field.

And this one absolutely did.

A Different Kind Of Heavy ๐Ÿ–ค

Mastodonโ€™s heaviness is not just about volume.

It is about density.

Their songs feel packed with life. Riffs pile on top of riffs. Drums roll like collapsing buildings. Vocals shift from grit to melody to full-force bellow. The music can sound swampy, cosmic, furious, mournful and triumphant all inside the same stretch.

That makes them stand out on a festival bill.

There are bands heavier in a straightforward sense.

There are bands faster.

There are bands more brutal.

But very few bands create a world as completely as Mastodon.

On the Opus Stage, that world was right there: strange creatures, ancient seas, spiritual weight, grief, mythology, chaos, and enough guitar tone to make your bones vibrate.

This was not just heavy music.

This was heavy storytelling.

โ€œYour Ghost Againโ€ Brought The Emotional Weight ๐Ÿ‘ป

Then came โ€œYour Ghost Again.โ€

And this one hit differently.

In a set full of monster riffs and classic material, this newer track carried a very real emotional shadow. With the song widely understood as part of Mastodonโ€™s tribute to Brent Hinds, it added a deeper layer to the evening.

Mastodon have always dealt in big themes โ€” death, grief, survival, illness, mythology, transformation. But this felt personal in a very direct way.

Live, โ€œYour Ghost Againโ€ had that ache running underneath the power. The guitars still carried weight, the band still sounded enormous, but there was something more fragile inside it. A sense of memory. A sense of loss. A sense of a band moving forward while still seeing the outline of someone who helped build the whole thing.

That matters.

Because Mastodonโ€™s history is not just records and riffs.

It is people.

And for a few minutes on the Opus Stage, that history felt very close.

A heavy moment, in every sense.

โ€œCrystal Skullโ€ Brings The Old-School Bite ๐Ÿ’€

After that emotional weight, โ€œCrystal Skullโ€ came in like a proper old-school punch.

This is Mastodon in attack mode โ€” muscular, direct, jagged and full of that Blood Mountain-era danger. It has that frantic edge that makes early Mastodon material feel like it could either conquer a mountain or headbutt one.

At Download, it brought the set back into savage territory.

The riffing was sharp.
The rhythm section thundered.
The crowd snapped back into headbang mode.
The old-school fans down front were absolutely having it.

โ€œCrystal Skullโ€ was a reminder of just how vicious Mastodon can be when they strip things down slightly and go for the throat.

Not simple.

Never simple.

But direct enough to make the Opus Stage feel like it had just been hit by a runaway beast.

Lovely stuff.

Brann Dailor Is Still Ridiculous ๐Ÿฅ

A Mastodon review is legally required to mention Brann Dailor being an absolute menace behind the kit.

The man drums like gravity personally offended him.

There is something unique about his playing. It is not just power. It is movement. His fills tumble, roll, scatter and explode in ways that make the songs feel constantly alive. Even when the riffs are thick and sludgy, the drums keep everything darting forward like a giant creature with too many legs.

On the Opus Stage, that energy was vital.

Mastodonโ€™s songs can be dense, but Brann gives them lift. He stops the heaviness becoming static. He turns every section into a moving thing.

And then he sings too.

Because apparently being one of metalโ€™s most recognisable drummers was not enough work for one evening.

Fair play.

Absolutely ridiculous.

In the best way.

โ€œBlack Tongueโ€ Gets Proper Nasty ๐Ÿ

โ€œBlack Tongueโ€ brought another filthy groove into the set.

This song has one of those riffs that feels like it crawled out from under something ancient and decided to cause problems. It is dark, chunky, strange and immediately recognisable.

At Download, it sounded huge.

The crowd response was strong, with the song giving the field a proper mid-set stomp. This is the kind of Mastodon track that works beautifully outdoors because it has enough groove for casual watchers and enough weirdness for the fans who want the band to take them somewhere stranger.

The guitars sounded nasty here.

Proper nasty.

Not polished metalcore nasty.

Swamp-engine nasty.

Like a haunted bulldozer.

That is the tone, mun.

Mastodon Are Prog Without Being Pretentious ๐Ÿค˜

Here is the thing about Mastodon: they are absolutely a prog band, but they never feel like they are showing off just to prove a point.

Yes, the songs twist.
Yes, the musicianship is absurd.
Yes, the time changes can make your brain briefly leave the tent.
Yes, the concepts can get cosmic, mythological and extremely weird.

But it still feels physical.

That is why they work at Download.

They are clever, but not cold. Technical, but not sterile. Progressive, but not smug. Their music still has dirt under its nails and sweat in the riffs.

On the Opus Stage, that balance was clear.

You could admire the craft if you wanted to.

Or you could just stand there, bang your head and let the whole thing roll over you like a very complicated landslide.

Both approaches were valid.

โ€œMegalodonโ€ Takes Things Into Deep Water ๐ŸŒŠ

Then came โ€œMegalodon.โ€

Come on.

That one is a beast.

A proper Leviathan-era monster.

It brought one of the setโ€™s most ferocious blasts, carrying that classic Mastodon oceanic madness โ€” riffs that churn, drums that tumble, and that feeling of being dragged into deep water by something with far too many teeth.

At Download, it was glorious.

This is the sort of song that reminds you why Mastodon became such a beloved force in heavy music. It is savage, weird, memorable and completely its own thing.

No other band sounds exactly like this.

Plenty have tried.

Most would get lost somewhere between the riff and the whirlpool.

โ€œMegalodonโ€ gave the Opus Stage a proper old-school battering, and the crowd responded with the kind of joy only metal fans can show while being musically eaten alive.

Tidy.

โ€œMore Than I Could Chewโ€ Hits Like Emotional Concrete ๐Ÿ–ค

โ€œMore Than I Could Chewโ€ brought the set back into more recent emotional heaviness.

This is one of Mastodonโ€™s strongest modern songs, and live it carried serious weight. It has that huge, mournful, crushing quality that made Hushed and Grim such a powerful chapter in the bandโ€™s story.

At Download, it sounded massive.

Not fast.

Not frantic.

Just heavy in that deep, chest-caving way.

The chorus had scale, the riffs had weight, and the whole song felt like a reminder that Mastodon are not just about monsters and mythology. They are also about grief, pressure, loss and the kind of human heaviness that does not need fantasy dressing to hurt.

This was one of the setโ€™s strongest emotional moments.

A proper slow-burn wallop.

The kind that does not just hit your neck.

It sits in the ribs.

The Crowd Reaction: Respectful, Loud And Fully Locked In ๐Ÿ™Œ

Mastodon did not get the same sort of crowd reaction as a simple shoutalong band.

They are not built for that.

This was not one giant field screaming the same easy hook every thirty seconds. It was a more focused reaction. More headbanging. More raised horns. More fans locking into the riffs and letting the songs unfold.

But make no mistake โ€” Donington was with them.

The Opus Stage crowd gave them strong energy, especially during the classic cuts. There was a proper roar for the older material, a noticeable lift for โ€œThe Motherload,โ€ and a big closing response when the final beast arrived.

This felt like a crowd that knew Mastodon mattered.

Not in a polite โ€œlegacy bandโ€ way.

In a โ€œthese songs still absolutely flattenโ€ way.

That difference matters.

โ€œCrack The Skyeโ€ Turns The Stage Cosmic โœจ

Then came โ€œCrack the Skye.โ€

This was one of the setโ€™s grandest moments.

The title track from one of Mastodonโ€™s most beloved records carries a different kind of weight. It is expansive, emotional, spiritual and strange โ€” everything that makes Mastodon special stretched into a more atmospheric shape.

Live, it brought scale.

The Opus Stage suddenly felt wider. The lights, the smoke, the evening air, the crowd, the slow-building intensity โ€” it all combined into one of those festival moments where the music feels bigger than the stage.

โ€œCrack the Skyeโ€ is not a quick hit.

It is a journey.

And Mastodon are one of the few bands who can take a festival crowd on that journey without losing them halfway through.

It was powerful, eerie and beautifully heavy.

A proper prog-metal centrepiece.

A Band Carrying History And Moving Forward ๐Ÿ˜

This Mastodon set carried more emotional weight than some fans may have expected.

The absence and memory of Brent Hinds gave parts of the performance an unavoidable shadow. Mastodonโ€™s catalogue is full of music built by that classic chemistry, and hearing those songs now in a new chapter gives them a different feeling.

But this did not feel like a band trapped by grief.

It felt like a band moving forward with the weight of history on their backs.

That is a hard thing to do.

Mastodon sounded strong. Focused. Heavy. Still strange. Still unmistakably themselves.

The newer material did not feel out of place beside the classics. The old songs still had teeth. The band still had that strange, muscular identity that has made them one of modern metalโ€™s true originals.

This was not just survival.

This was continuation.

And it mattered.

โ€œBlood And Thunderโ€ Ends With Total Donington Detonation ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ”ฅ

There was only one way to close this set.

โ€œBlood and Thunder.โ€

Obviously.

That riff remains one of modern metalโ€™s greatest festival weapons. The second it starts, the whole field knows what is coming. It is monstrous, direct, ridiculous, glorious and absolutely built to make people shout about white whales like their lives depend on it.

At Download, it went off exactly as it should.

The crowd roared.

The horns went up.

The pit energy lifted.

The Opus Stage became one big Leviathan-shaped riot.

And when that immortal final chant hit, Donington gave it everything.

That is the thing with โ€œBlood and Thunder.โ€ It is heavy enough for the riff crowd, catchy enough for the wider field, weird enough to remain unmistakably Mastodon, and iconic enough to send any festival set home properly.

As a closer, it was perfect.

No notes.

Just thunder.

Lots of thunder.

Why Mastodon Worked So Well At Download ๐Ÿค˜

Mastodon worked on the Opus Stage because Download needs bands that challenge the field as much as they entertain it.

Not everything has to be easy.

Not every set needs to be instantly digestible.

Sometimes a festival needs a band that turns up, drops a weird riff in an odd shape, smashes it into a chorus, drags everyone through space, grief and ancient sea beasts, then ends with one of the biggest metal songs of the century.

Mastodon are that band.

They bring technicality without losing soul.

Heaviness without becoming flat.

Emotion without becoming soft.

Prog without losing the pit.

They are one of the rare bands who can be both brainy and brutal, both strange and immediate, both old-school heavy and completely modern.

At Download 2026, that made them stand out beautifully.

Final Verdict: Mastodon Turned The Opus Stage Into A Sludge-Prog Beast ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Mastodon on the Opus Stage at Download Festival 2026 was a thunderous, emotional and brilliantly heavy Sunday evening set.

They brought massive riffs.
They brought cosmic weirdness.
They brought prog-metal intelligence.
They brought sludge weight.
They brought grief, groove and full beast-mode energy.
They brought a setlist that balanced modern emotion with classic Mastodon punishment.

From โ€œTread Lightlyโ€ through to โ€œBlood and Thunder,โ€ the set was powerful, focused and full of character. โ€œThe Motherloadโ€ got the crowd moving, โ€œYour Ghost Againโ€ carried real emotional weight, โ€œCrystal Skullโ€ and โ€œMegalodonโ€ delivered old-school bite, โ€œMore Than I Could Chewโ€ hit like emotional concrete, โ€œCrack the Skyeโ€ brought cosmic scale, and โ€œBlood and Thunderโ€ closed the whole thing with a proper Donington detonation.

This was not the simplest set of the weekend.

It was better than that.

It was Mastodon: weird, heavy, clever, emotional, monstrous and completely themselves.

The Opus Stage got swallowed by the beast.

And Donington loved every minute.

The Riff Report Rating: 9/10

Sludge-prog thunder, monster riffs and real emotional weight. Mastodon brought cosmic heaviness to the Opus Stage and closed with a โ€œBlood and Thunderโ€ roar that shook Donington properly. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿค˜

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
