Whatโs occurring in punk land? Well, it wouldnโt be a proper week without John Lydon โ a.k.a. Johnny Rotten โ spitting venom at the very band that made him famous. The latest rant? Heโs branded talk of a Sex Pistols reunion as nothing more than โkaraoke.โ Brutal, but very on brand.
Rotten Refuses to Play the Game ๐คฌ
Lydon has never been shy about his feelings on reunions, nostalgia, and the Pistolsโ place in history. This time heโs doubled down, saying the fire and fury of 1977 canโt be recreated โ and trying to do so just cheapens it.
โItโs not the Sex Pistols, itโs bloody karaoke. Punk wasnโt about cash-grabs or sing-along nostalgia โ it was about ripping it all up.โ
Thatโs a proper job of a takedown, mun.
The Clash of Attitudes โ๏ธ
While Steve Jones and Paul Cook have shown more willingness to dust off the old songs for a payday (and who can blame โem with those royalty splits?), Lydonโs stance hasnโt budged. To him, every attempt to resurrect the Pistols feels like dragging a corpse back onstage.
Itโs not the first time heโs clashed with his ex-bandmates either โ remember the whole Danny Boyle Pistol TV drama? Lydon slammed that too, claiming the others stitched him up by approving the series without his consent.
Punk or Panto? ๐ญ
Hereโs the question though โ would a Pistols gig in 2025 actually feel like a gigโฆ or like your dad shouting Anarchy in the UK into the karaoke machine down Wetherspoons? ๐ป
On one hand, the Pistolsโ songs are timeless, raw and still slap harder than half the so-called punk bands flogging TikTok merch today. On the other, punkโs about spirit and rebellion, not nostalgia tours with overpriced pints and commemorative T-shirts.
Johnny Rotten: Still Rotten ๐งท
Love him or loathe him, Lydonโs the living embodiment of never selling out (well, except for that butter advert, but letโs not go there ๐คฃ). Heโs loud, heโs stubborn, and heโs making damn sure the final word on the Pistols belongs to him.
And honestly? We wouldnโt have it any other way.
๐ค What do you reckon, butt? Would you still throw your Doc Martens in the pit for one last Pistols show, or is Lydon right to call time on the chaos?
