Ahh, the ol’ Use Your Illusion saga – two albums, one hell of a legacy, and now… a Dolby Atmos remix that’s not happening, apparently. Why? Because Guns N’ Roses reportedly vetoed the whole thing. Yup, even in 2025, GN’R still know how to stir up some rock ‘n’ roll drama. 🎤🔥
What Actually Happened? 🤔
Progressive rock wizard and sonic surgeon Steven Wilson (yes, that Steven Wilson – Porcupine Tree, Opeth collaborations, surround sound messiah) revealed in a recent chat that he’d completed a full Dolby Atmos remix of Use Your Illusion I & II. But before you could say “November Rain in spatial audio”, GN’R reportedly said… “Nah, we’re good.”
Wilson dropped the bombshell in a fan Q&A, saying:
“I did do a Dolby Atmos mix of Use Your Illusion. It was fully approved by the label, but then the band decided not to go ahead with it.”
Oof. Brutal. Even prog legends get ghosted, apparently. 👻
Why Would GN’R Say No? 🤨
Here’s where the speculation kicks in harder than a Duff McKagan bassline:
- Control Freak Vibes – Axl Rose is famously very particular about the band’s output. Maybe he didn’t like the idea of someone else remixing their work, no matter how talented?
- Classic Purism – Let’s be honest, GN’R fans can be a nostalgic bunch. Messing with the sound of a double album that’s basically sacred might’ve sparked riots on Sunset Strip.
- Timing Issues? – They’ve just dropped the 30th-anniversary reissues, and maybe the band didn’t want to overshadow those with a new mix?
Either way, it sounds like a proper “Don’t touch my baby” moment from the band. 🍼💥
What Did We Miss Out On? 😩
If you’ve ever heard a Steven Wilson Atmos mix (his work on The Beatles, Kiss, King Crimson, NIN), you’ll know we’ve missed out on:
- Sonic clarity – separating those layered vocals, strings, and Slash solos like never before
- Drum madness – Matt Sorum’s fills would’ve sounded like they were punching holes through your ceiling
- Full stadium vibes in your ears – imagine “Civil War” or “Estranged” exploding around your living room like a war movie soundtrack 🎆
Fans React: Mixed as a GN’R Setlist 🎭
Across fan forums, Reddit threads, and Twitter/X chaos, the response has been all over the place:
💬 “Axl probably thinks Dolby Atmos is a type of coffee.”
💬 “Wilson’s mix would’ve been better than the last 3 official GN’R releases combined.”
💬 “Good. Some albums should be left the way they were meant to sound.”
💬 “I’m gutted. Take my money, Steve!” 💸
Only in the world of Guns N’ Roses, mun… 🫠
Final Thoughts: Rock ‘n’ Roll Stubbornness? 🤘🧱
Look, we get it. Use Your Illusion is an iconic, messy, glorious double-album beast – full of pianos, shredding, opera singers and Axl’s ahem “creative vision.” But letting Steven Wilson give it the spatial audio treatment could’ve been lush as hell. 🎧✨
Instead, we’re left with a tantalising what if?
Still, respect to Wilson for even attempting to wrestle with the madness. And to GN’R? Fair play – but we’re still waiting on a new album that doesn’t involve leftovers from 1996. 🙃
TL;DR 📝
- Steven Wilson mixed Use Your Illusion in Dolby Atmos.
- GN’R said “No thanks” and scrapped the release.
- Fans are either fuming, heartbroken, or oddly relieved.
- The Dolby dream is dead… for now. 😢💔
C’mon, Slash. Change Axl’s mind over a whisky or two, yeah? 🥃🐍
