Atmosphere, Heaviness, Huge Choruses And Donington Falling Under The Spell

Some bands arrive at Download Festival ready to smash the place up.

Some arrive with fire, theatrics, horror props, crowd-surf chaos, monster riffs and enough noise to make the campsite bins vibrate.

Then there are Bad Omens.

Bad Omens do not just play a set. They build a world.

Taking to the Apex Stage at Download Festival 2026 on Sunday evening, Bad Omens brought a different kind of heaviness to Donington. Not just riffs. Not just breakdowns. Not just the usual “shout, pit, repeat” festival behaviour.

This was mood.

This was atmosphere.

This was sleek, dark, cinematic modern metal with the confidence of a band who know exactly how big they have become — and exactly how to make a huge festival field feel like it has been pulled into their orbit.

And fair play, butt — Donington went right in.

After a Sunday already stacked with unpeople’s noisy wake-up call, Kublai Khan TX’s hardcore violence, RØRY’s emotional catharsis, Bloodywood’s global metal party, The Pretty Reckless’ dirty rock glamour and Ice Nine Kills’ horror-metal madness, Bad Omens arrived as the perfect bridge into the final headline stretch.

They were not the loudest band of the day.

They were not the silliest.

They were not the most chaotic.

But they may have been one of the most controlled.

And that control made them feel massive.

The Calm Before The Final Storm 🌒

Sunday evening at Download has a special energy.

Everyone is tired, but nobody wants it to end. The sun is sliding away, the final-night emotions are creeping in, and the whole field has that strange mix of exhaustion, excitement and “go on then, one more big one” energy.

Bad Omens were perfectly placed in that slot.

They did not come out trying to compete with Ice Nine Kills’ horror show or Bloodywood’s dhol-powered riot. Instead, they shifted the temperature completely. The Apex Stage suddenly felt darker, sleeker and more focused.

The crowd seemed to understand it too.

This was not a set for nonsense.

This was not a set for inflatable bananas and beer-fuelled dad dancing.

This was a set for black-clad singalongs, massive drops, moody lighting, emotional choruses and thousands of people singing like they had been waiting all weekend to get pulled into the darkness.

Bad Omens gave Download a proper late-Sunday mood reset.

And it worked beautifully.

“Specter” Opens The Portal 👻

Opening with “Specter” was a bold move.

It immediately set the tone for the band’s current era — dark, polished, modern and cinematic. Instead of kicking the doors open with the most obvious old-school crowd-killer, Bad Omens let the atmosphere creep in first.

That takes confidence.

At a festival, especially one as loud and easily distracted as Download, atmosphere can be risky. You either command the field or you lose it.

Bad Omens commanded it.

“Specter” gave the set a shadowy, electronic-edged opening that made the Apex Stage feel less like a traditional rock setup and more like the start of a dystopian film. The sound was clean, huge and carefully controlled, giving the crowd a clear signal:

This is not just a gig. This is a production.

From the first track, the band looked and sounded like they belonged on that stage.

No nerves.

No filler.

Just focus.

The Setlist: Modern Metal With Teeth And Atmosphere ⚡

Bad Omens’ reported setlist was packed with modern anthems, heavy moments and cinematic tension.

Specter
Glass Houses
THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND
Dying to Love
CONCRETE JUNGLE
Nowhere to Go
Limits
ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE
Left For Good
What It Cost
Like a Villain
Just Pretend
Impose
Dethrone

That is a serious festival set, mun.

It had the newer-world atmosphere.
It had early heaviness.
It had the massive viral-era singalongs.
It had emotional tension.
It had the brutal late-set punch.
It had songs that made people scream, sway and lose themselves in equal measure.

What stood out most was the pacing.

Bad Omens know how to build a set. They do not just stack heavy tracks and hope the crowd survives. They move between pressure and release, atmosphere and attack, beauty and brutality. That is why they have become such a powerful live act.

They understand that heaviness hits harder when you make people wait for it.

“Glass Houses” Brings The Early Bite 🧨

After the moody opening, “Glass Houses” brought the first proper punch.

This was a smart placement. It reached back into the band’s heavier early identity and gave the Apex crowd something immediate to grab. The riffs had bite, the vocals snapped into focus, and the field started to move with more urgency.

Bad Omens are interesting because they have evolved so much that different parts of their fanbase connect with different eras. Some are there for the dark pop-metal atmosphere. Some are there for the brutal moments. Some are there for the emotional choruses. Some are there because TikTok got them hooked and now they are in a field wondering why their soul hurts.

“Glass Houses” reminded everyone that before Bad Omens became sleek modern-metal giants, they had plenty of venom in the tank.

And they still do.

Noah Sebastian Holds The Apex Stage In His Hand 🎤

Noah Sebastian is a rare kind of frontman.

He does not need to overwork the crowd. He does not need to constantly shout instructions or bounce around like a human energy drink. His power comes from restraint as much as force.

On the Apex Stage, that was obvious.

He controlled the mood.

When the songs needed delicacy, he gave them space. When they needed venom, he snapped. When the huge choruses arrived, he let the crowd come with him rather than forcing the moment.

Vocally, he had the range Bad Omens need: clean, haunting, sharp, heavy and emotionally direct. That voice is the centre of the whole machine. Around him, the band build the atmosphere. The lights, electronics, guitars, drums and tension all create the world.

But Noah is the gravity.

He made a massive stage feel strangely intimate, and that is not easy.

Proper frontman energy — not loudest-in-the-room energy, but the kind that makes the room shut up and listen.

“THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND” Was Pure Apex Theatre 🖤

Then came “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND.”

This was one of the set’s defining moments.

The song is basically Bad Omens’ entire modern identity bottled into one dark, seductive, heavy, atmospheric anthem. It is sleek, emotional, moody and absolutely massive live.

At Download, it landed beautifully.

The crowd response was immediate. You could feel the recognition ripple across the field, and the chorus came back strongly. This was not just people enjoying a song. It felt like people stepping into a shared emotional space.

That is what Bad Omens do incredibly well.

They make heavy music feel cinematic and personal at the same time.

The track’s tension, electronic atmosphere and eventual heaviness made the Apex Stage feel huge without needing chaos for chaos’ sake. It was controlled drama.

Dark.

Stylish.

Very, very effective.

“Dying To Love” Adds Fresh Blood ❤️‍🔥

“Dying to Love” gave the set a strong newer-era moment.

This one felt sharp, modern and very much part of the band’s current chapter. It proved that Bad Omens are not simply riding the success of The Death of Peace of Mind era — they are still evolving, still pushing, still finding new ways to blend emotional songwriting with heavy, polished production.

Live, it carried well across the Apex Stage.

The song brought a slightly different emotional colour, keeping the set from becoming too one-note. Bad Omens are strongest when they play with contrast, and “Dying to Love” helped maintain that sense of movement.

It was not just a placeholder between bigger songs.

It stood up.

That matters when a band’s catalogue has become so stacked with fan favourites. New material has to fight for its place.

This one earned it.

“CONCRETE JUNGLE” Makes Donington Feel Huge 🌆

“CONCRETE JUNGLE” was one of the big atmosphere-meets-heaviness moments.

That song has scale. It feels built for a stage this size. It has tension, drama and a sense of urban dread that somehow translates brilliantly into a field full of rock fans in Derbyshire.

Don’t ask how, butt. It just does.

At Download, the track sounded enormous.

The low-end punch worked beautifully, the electronic elements gave it that cinematic edge, and the heavier sections hit with real force. This was where the set started feeling less like a collection of songs and more like a full production arc.

Bad Omens were not simply playing to the Apex Stage.

They were filling it.

“CONCRETE JUNGLE” was a reminder that modern metal does not have to choose between atmosphere and impact. You can have both. Bad Omens do.

“Nowhere To Go” And “Limits” Bring The Crowd Connection 🙌

The run through “Nowhere to Go” and “Limits” gave the set a more direct emotional pull.

“Nowhere to Go” had that big, dark, singalong energy that makes Bad Omens such a festival force now. The crowd knew it, felt it and gave it back. It was one of those moments where voices rose across the field and the whole thing felt properly locked in.

Then “Limits” brought a throwback punch and one of the clearest links to the band’s earlier rise.

There is something very satisfying about hearing older material sitting comfortably beside the newer, more cinematic sound. It shows how the band have changed without completely severing the roots.

“Limits” had bite.

The crowd liked that.

So did we.

“ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE” Brings The Violence Back 💥

Then Bad Omens reminded everyone they can still go absolutely feral.

“ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE” hit like a switchblade.

After all that atmosphere, emotional tension and sleek darkness, this was the moment where the set threw the crowd into heavier territory. The pit energy kicked up, heads went forward, and the Apex Stage got one of its nastiest moments of the evening.

This is where the pacing really paid off.

If Bad Omens had been relentlessly heavy from the start, this might not have hit as hard. But because they had spent time building mood and tension, when the violence arrived it felt explosive.

That is smart live construction.

“ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE” was brutal, sharp and exactly the sort of track that shuts down any lazy nonsense about Bad Omens being too polished to still bring the heavy.

They absolutely can.

And did.

“Left For Good” And “What It Cost” Slow The Pulse 🕯️

After the heavier blow, “Left For Good” and “What It Cost” gave the set more space.

This is where Bad Omens’ cinematic instincts really matter. They are not afraid of mood. They do not panic if the crowd is not constantly jumping. They understand that quieter, darker, more spacious moments can make a big stage feel even more intense.

“Left For Good” carried that emotional late-set weight, giving Noah room to lean into the more vulnerable side of the performance.

“What It Cost” worked almost like a transition — a breath before the final emotional and heavy stretch. In the hands of a less confident band, that kind of pacing might risk losing people.

Bad Omens held them.

That says a lot.

The crowd stayed with the mood, because by this point the band had earned trust.

“Like A Villain” Was A Monster Singalong 😈

Then came “Like a Villain.”

Big one.

This song has become one of Bad Omens’ defining live moments, and at Download it absolutely delivered. That chorus is built to be sung by thousands of people, and the Apex Stage crowd obliged beautifully.

This was one of the loudest crowd responses of the set.

You could feel the field light up. People who had been swaying were now singing. People who had been watching quietly were fully involved. It had that late-set magic where a song arrives at exactly the right time and suddenly the whole performance jumps up another level.

Noah’s delivery was strong, but the crowd did plenty of the heavy lifting too.

That is not a criticism.

That is the point.

Bad Omens have songs that people want to live inside for a few minutes. “Like a Villain” is one of them.

“Just Pretend” Turns The Apex Stage Into One Big Voice 🖤

If “Like a Villain” was big, “Just Pretend” was enormous.

This was the emotional peak.

There are songs that become bigger than a band expects. Songs that escape into fan culture, playlists, memories, videos, breakdowns, breakups, late-night drives and all the little places people hide feelings they do not know what to do with.

“Just Pretend” is one of those songs.

At Download, it felt huge.

The crowd sang it back with real force — not polite festival singing, but full emotional release. This was one of those moments where the entire field seemed to breathe together. Lights, voices, late-Sunday exhaustion, the knowledge that the weekend was heading towards its end — it all combined into something properly special.

Bad Omens did not need to force it.

They just let the song happen.

And Donington took it from there.

“Impose” Builds The Final Tension ⚡

“Impose” gave the set one last mood shift before the closing attack.

This was the kind of track that works well late in a Bad Omens set because it maintains the atmosphere while pulling the crowd towards something heavier. It felt like the dark hallway before the final room.

And everyone knew what was coming.

You could feel the anticipation build. After the emotional release of “Just Pretend,” the crowd was ready for one final heavy hit. Bad Omens handled that transition well, keeping the energy controlled rather than simply throwing everything at the wall.

Again, that is their strength.

Precision.

Pacing.

Mood.

Then violence.

“Dethrone” Ends It Like A Final Exorcism 🔥

Closing with “Dethrone” was absolutely the right call.

After all the atmosphere, all the emotion, all the cinematic tension, Bad Omens ended with pure fury.

This song remains one of their most savage live weapons. It is nasty, direct and cathartic in a completely different way from “Just Pretend.” Where that song opens the heart, “Dethrone” empties the lungs.

At Download, it went off.

The crowd knew exactly what to do. The pit energy spiked, the screams came back, and the Apex Stage finally got the full violent release the set had been building towards.

It was the perfect ending because it reminded everyone that Bad Omens are not just masters of mood. They can still bring the hammer down when they choose.

And when they choose, mun, it hurts.

Beautifully.

Why Bad Omens Worked So Well At Download 🖤

Bad Omens worked on the Apex Stage because they represent exactly where modern heavy music is heading.

They are not trapped by genre rules.
They are not afraid of electronics.
They are not afraid of pop structure.
They are not afraid of silence, mood or vulnerability.
They are not afraid to be brutally heavy when the moment calls for it.

That makes them powerful.

Download has always needed bands that push things forward. Not just legends preserving the past, but artists reshaping what the future of heavy music sounds like. Bad Omens feel like one of those bands.

They bring the emotional connection of alternative rock, the production polish of modern pop, the atmosphere of dark electronic music and the impact of metalcore. That combination is why their rise has been so rapid, and why a slot like this felt completely natural.

They did not look like a band trying to earn the stage.

They looked like a band preparing for even bigger ones.

The Crowd Reaction: Donington Was Fully Under The Spell 🙌

The Apex Stage crowd was absolutely with them.

This was not the wildest crowd of the weekend in terms of nonstop chaos, but it was one of the most engaged. There is a difference.

People watched closely.
People sang loudly.
People moved when the heavy parts demanded it.
People held the emotional moments with real attention.
People screamed the big choruses like the songs meant something.

That is the Bad Omens effect.

They do not always create chaos in the traditional festival sense. They create immersion. The crowd does not just react to the songs — it sinks into them.

By the time “Just Pretend” and “Dethrone” arrived, Donington felt fully claimed.

Not conquered by force.

Pulled in by gravity.

A Band Ready For The Next Level 📈

This set felt significant.

Bad Omens were not headlining Download 2026, but the performance had that “future headliner conversation” energy around it.

They have the songs.
They have the crowd.
They have the production style.
They have the atmosphere.
They have the emotional connection.
They have the heavy moments.
They have the confidence.

That is a dangerous combination.

Apex Stage suited them, but it also felt like a stepping stone. A band this controlled, this popular and this sonically ambitious does not feel like it is stopping here.

Download may well have witnessed a preview of something bigger.

And honestly?

Based on this set, they would not look out of place.

Final Verdict: Bad Omens Cast A Dark Spell Over Donington 🖤🔥

Bad Omens on the Apex Stage at Download Festival 2026 was a slick, powerful and emotionally charged Sunday evening set.

They brought atmosphere.
They brought control.
They brought heaviness.
They brought huge choruses.
They brought one of the strongest crowd singalongs of the day.
They brought the darkness without losing the hooks.

From “Specter” through to “Dethrone,” the set felt carefully built and seriously effective. “THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND” gave the stage its cinematic heart, “ARTIFICIAL SUICIDE” brought the violence, “Like a Villain” and “Just Pretend” united the field, and “Dethrone” ended the whole thing with a proper heavy exorcism.

This was not chaos for chaos’ sake.

This was precision darkness.

Bad Omens stepped onto the Apex Stage and made Donington feel like it had entered their world for seventy minutes.

Proper powerful, butt.

The Riff Report Rating: 9/10

Cinematic, controlled, emotional and brutally heavy when it mattered. Bad Omens brought modern metal darkness to the Apex Stage and proved they are future-headliner material. 🖤🤘🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
