🎸🔥 THE SEARCH IS STILL ON, BUTT! Seattle grunge legends PEARL JAM have confirmed that they’re continuing to audition drummers following MATT CAMERON’s departure after an extraordinary 27 years behind the kit. And while PAUL McCARTNEY drummer ABE LABORIEL JR. impressed fans during two September performances at Ohana Festival, bassist JEFF AMENT has revealed that the band still haven’t chosen their permanent replacement.
But there’s some brilliant news for PEARL JAM fans! Ament has confirmed that the band want to return to the stage in 2027, admitting that while they’re not rushing their decision, they know time isn’t standing still. With EDDIE VEDDER, MIKE McCREADY, STONE GOSSARD and AMENT preparing for another chapter, could one of grunge’s greatest surviving bands be getting ready for a major comeback?
Well, bloody hell, Riff Report crew!
Somebody check the noticeboards in Seattle.
Make a few phone calls.
And perhaps start asking around your local rehearsal studios.
Because one of the most important bands in alternative rock history is still looking for somebody who knows their way around a drum kit!
PEARL JAM NEED A DRUMMER!
And not just somebody who can bash out a few beats after three pints down the pub.
We’re talking about a musician capable of tackling some of the most recognisable drum parts in grunge history.
Even Flow.
Jeremy.
Alive.
Corduroy.
Given To Fly.
And enough enormous rock anthems to keep a drummer busy for the next decade.
It’s a pretty serious job description, mun!
But after the departure of longtime drummer Matt Cameron in July 2025, the group have been taking their time finding the right person.
Despite performing with the enormously talented Abe Laboriel Jr. at Ohana Festival in September, a permanent appointment remains unconfirmed.
Now bassist and founding member Jeff Ament has delivered the clearest update yet.
In a new interview with Under The Radar, published on Tuesday 3 November 2026, Ament confirmed that auditions are continuing.
And while there’s no need to rush, the band want to return to performing live next year.
PEARL JAM ARE AIMING TO GET BACK ONSTAGE IN 2027!
Now that’s what we call some encouraging news.
🥁 Jeff Ament Confirms Pearl Jam Are Still Auditioning Drummers!
The latest comments emerged during an interview with journalist Lee Campbell, who spoke to Ament about his new photography book, Since Forever.
The conversation explored the band’s earliest days, the Seattle music scene, Ament’s friendship with his bandmates and the extraordinary experiences they’ve shared.
But naturally, the subject of PEARL JAM’s vacant drum stool came up.
And Ament confirmed that the band are still working out who should take over from Cameron.
He also made it clear that they don’t feel under pressure to announce somebody immediately.
“We’re not in any massive rush but we want to play some shows next year.”
That’s a rather significant statement.
Because while fans have been speculating about possible replacements for more than a year, the band themselves have remained relatively quiet about their plans.
Now we know that they’re actively considering their options.
And more importantly, they’re thinking about future concerts.
But let’s make one thing absolutely clear.
No permanent drummer has been announced, and no PEARL JAM concerts have been confirmed for 2027.
At the moment, Ament is describing the band’s intentions.
Not announcing a completed tour itinerary.
There’s a big difference.
And we’re not going to start booking imaginary Cardiff concerts just because the idea sounds bloody magnificent!
Although…
We’ll come back to that later, butt!
⏳ ‘I’m 63, But I’m Pretty Fit’ – Ament Knows Time Is Moving On!
One of the most interesting parts of the interview was Ament’s surprisingly candid discussion about getting older.
At 63, the bassist remains enthusiastic about performing.
But he’s also conscious that PEARL JAM aren’t the same young musicians who emerged from Seattle during the early 1990s.
They’ve spent decades touring the world.
Recording albums.
Travelling between countries.
And delivering physically demanding performances.
And while Ament clearly believes there’s more music left to play, he doesn’t want to waste valuable years unnecessarily.
He joked that he could probably continue behaving like a foolish young musician onstage for a few more years.
But beneath the humour was a serious point.
He wants to enjoy live performances while the band still feel capable of delivering them at the standard they expect.
And we can certainly understand that.
PEARL JAM have never been the sort of group who simply wander onstage, play a few hits and disappear after 45 minutes.
Their concerts are often substantial affairs.
Long setlists.
Powerful performances.
Songs that change from night to night.
And the kind of emotional connection with audiences that has helped make them one of rock’s most respected live bands.
That requires energy.
And for a group whose history stretches back more than 35 years, it’s understandable that they’re thinking carefully about the future.
The good news is that retirement clearly isn’t the first thing on Jeff Ament’s mind!
💔 Matt Cameron’s Departure After 27 Years Left A Massive Hole In Pearl Jam!
Of course, the reason this search is necessary remains one of the biggest alternative rock stories of recent years.
On 7 July 2025, Matt Cameron announced that he was leaving PEARL JAM.
For many fans, the news came completely out of the blue.
Cameron had been an essential part of the band’s identity since joining in 1998.
He’d performed on seven studio albums.
Played hundreds of concerts.
And helped establish one of the most stable periods in PEARL JAM’s history.
For generations of fans, Cameron was simply the drummer.
The bloke sitting behind the enormous kit, providing those powerful rhythms while Eddie Vedder poured his heart into the microphone.
But after 27 years, the musician decided it was time for a change.
The departure was described as amicable.
And Cameron thanked the band for the extraordinary musical journey they’d shared.
However, the emotional impact of his decision was clearly considerable.
❤️ Jeff Ament Admits Cameron’s Exit Was Deeply Sad
During his latest interview, Ament reflected on the departure.
He acknowledged that losing Cameron after decades of working together had been an emotional experience.
The bassist described it as “a pretty fucking sad moment”.
And honestly, that’s understandable.
Imagine spending nearly three decades travelling around the world with the same musician.
Recording albums together.
Playing enormous festivals.
Sharing backstage experiences.
Dealing with difficult moments.
And celebrating extraordinary achievements.
Then suddenly, that familiar person is no longer part of the touring operation.
That’s a substantial change.
But Ament also explained that Cameron’s departure hadn’t been entirely unexpected.
According to the bassist, his bandmate had been thinking about moving towards different creative priorities for some time.
And Ament ultimately respects that decision.
Because friendship doesn’t have to end when a musical partnership does.
🖤 Chris Cornell’s Death Was A Major Turning Point
One particularly emotional part of Ament’s interview involved Chris Cornell, the legendary SOUNDGARDEN and AUDIOSLAVE vocalist who died in May 2017.
Cornell was an enormously important figure within Seattle’s alternative rock community.
He had longstanding friendships with the members of PEARL JAM.
And his musical relationship with Matt Cameron stretched back decades.
Cameron joined SOUNDGARDEN in 1986, helping develop the distinctive rhythm section behind some of the band’s most celebrated recordings.
The two musicians worked together during the group’s original career and later reunion.
So Cornell’s death was a devastating loss for the wider Seattle music community.
Ament said the tragedy had been particularly difficult for Cameron.
He recalled that his longtime bandmate had subsequently begun questioning what he wanted from his musical future.
However, it’s important not to confuse Ament’s recollections with a definitive explanation of Cameron’s decision to leave PEARL JAM.
Cameron has separately discussed the demands of touring and his desire to pursue other musical projects.
And those explanations deserve to be understood on their own terms.
What is clear is that the musicians share an enormous amount of personal and musical history.
And after such a long partnership, moving forwards was always going to be emotional.
🥁 Why Matt Cameron Decided To Leave Pearl Jam
Cameron gave further insight into his decision during a September 2025 interview with Billboard.
And his explanation was remarkably straightforward.
The demanding touring schedule had become increasingly difficult to maintain.
PEARL JAM are renowned for delivering lengthy concerts, often stretching towards three hours.
And while that’s fantastic value for fans, it’s an enormous physical commitment for musicians.
Particularly drummers.
Think about it.
You’re sitting behind a drum kit for much of the evening.
Driving the rhythm.
Maintaining the tempo.
Delivering powerful performances.
And providing the foundation for some of the most demanding songs in the band’s catalogue.
Now imagine doing that repeatedly.
Across multiple countries.
While travelling constantly.
For decades.
Cameron explained that he’d reached a point where he wanted to redirect his time and energy towards different projects.
He even joked about preferring a devastatingly heavy 70-minute performance rather than another marathon concert.
And fair play to him!
After nearly three decades with PEARL JAM, he’s certainly earned the right to make those decisions.
🎸 Matt Cameron Isn’t Retiring From Music
Here’s another important detail.
Cameron hasn’t given up making music.
He’s continued pursuing projects connected with SOUNDGARDEN and other musicians.
He’s also been involved with Is This Real?, a project influenced by the American punk band WIPERS.
Rather than abandoning music, he’s changing how he approaches it.
And that’s an important distinction.
Because a musician leaving one band doesn’t automatically mean they’ve finished their career.
Sometimes they’re simply ready to explore something different.
🤘 Abe Laboriel Jr. Joins Pearl Jam At Ohana Festival!
Now then.
Here’s where things get particularly exciting.
Because PEARL JAM have already given fans an opportunity to hear what the band might sound like with another drummer.
And they didn’t exactly bring in some inexperienced musician!
ABE LABORIEL JR.!
For anyone unfamiliar with the name, Laboriel is one of the most respected professional drummers in the business.
He’s spent more than two decades performing with PAUL McCARTNEY.
Yes.
That Paul McCartney.
The bloke from THE BEATLES.
Not a bad name to have on your CV, is it, butt?
Laboriel has also worked with numerous other major artists and possesses enormous experience performing in different musical styles.
He’s technically gifted.
Powerful.
Musically versatile.
And capable of adapting to demanding live arrangements.
So when PEARL JAM needed somebody to join them at Ohana Festival, he was a particularly interesting choice.
🏖️ Ohana Festival – 25 September 2026
The first appearance came on Friday 25 September 2026, at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California.
The performance had originally been advertised as Eddie Vedder And Friends.
But during the show, something rather wonderful happened.
The singer was joined by his PEARL JAM bandmates.
Mike McCready.
Stone Gossard.
Jeff Ament.
And behind the drums?
Abe Laboriel Jr.
Suddenly, the festival audience found themselves watching a surprise PEARL JAM performance!
The band opened with Corduroy before continuing through songs including:
- Hail, Hail
- Scared Of Fear
- Wishlist
- Dark Matter
- Do The Evolution
- Better Man
- Even Flow
For fans who had been wondering what the band might sound like without Cameron, it was a hugely significant moment.
And Laboriel certainly had a big job on his hands.
He wasn’t simply playing a couple of straightforward rock songs.
He was stepping into the musical world of a band with more than three decades of history.
No pressure, then, mun!
🔥 Pearl Jam Return For Another Performance On 27 September!
Two days later, on Sunday 27 September, PEARL JAM returned for a full headline performance at Ohana Festival.
Once again, Laboriel was behind the drum kit.
The group delivered an extensive set featuring material from different periods of their career.
Among the songs performed were:
- Long Road
- Given To Fly
- Daughter
- Why Go
- Even Flow
- Wreckage
- Jeremy
- Black
- Better Man
- Alive
- Setting Sun
- Yellow Ledbetter
The concert also featured guest appearances from guitarist Billy Strings, who joined the band for selected performances.
It was a substantial comeback.
And for fans concerned about the group’s future, seeing them perform together again was encouraging.
But there was still one enormous question.
Was Abe Laboriel Jr. officially PEARL JAM’s new drummer?
🤯 Is Abe Laboriel Jr. The Permanent Replacement?
Short answer?
Not officially.
And that’s where things became a little confusing.
Following the festival, speculation spread that Laboriel had permanently joined PEARL JAM.
Considering his experience and the success of the performances, it was an understandable assumption.
But Eddie Vedder subsequently shared a statement thanking the drummer for his participation.
And the wording was particularly important.
Vedder described Laboriel as sitting in on drums for the band.
He also thanked Paul McCartney for allowing the collaboration to happen.
That suggested the arrangement was temporary rather than a formal permanent appointment.
Now, Ament’s latest comments have reinforced that interpretation.
The bassist praised Laboriel as an exceptional drummer.
But he also confirmed that auditions remain ongoing.
🎸 Could Abe Still Join Pearl Jam?
Certainly.
Nothing in Ament’s comments definitively rules him out.
But nothing confirms that he’s secured the position either.
And his ongoing professional commitments could also influence any future arrangement.
For now, the confirmed facts are straightforward.
Abe Laboriel Jr. performed with PEARL JAM at Ohana Festival in September 2026.
He has not been announced as the permanent replacement for Matt Cameron.
The band are still auditioning drummers.
And until the musicians make an official announcement, that’s where things stand.
🥁 Pearl Jam’s Drummer History – Five Musicians Who Helped Shape The Band!
Here’s something worth remembering.
PEARL JAM have already experienced several major drummer changes throughout their history.
While Cameron’s 27-year tenure created a long period of stability, the band’s early years were rather different.
In fact, five drummers have held the position during its history.
And each contributed something important.
1. Dave Krusen – The Original Ten Drummer
1990–1991
Dave Krusen played on the band’s legendary debut album Ten.
Released in August 1991, the record included classics such as Alive, Even Flow, Jeremy and Black.
His drumming helped establish the sound that introduced PEARL JAM to the world.
And considering the enormous success of that album, it’s an extraordinary contribution.
2. Matt Chamberlain – A Brief But Important Chapter
1991
Matt Chamberlain joined following Krusen’s departure.
Although his time with PEARL JAM was relatively short, he helped the group continue performing during an important transitional period.
He subsequently developed an impressive career as a session and touring drummer.
3. Dave Abbruzzese – The Grunge Explosion
1991–1994
Dave Abbruzzese joined as PEARL JAM were becoming international superstars.
He played on Vs. and Vitalogy, two important albums in the band’s catalogue.
His energetic drumming helped shape the sound of the group’s early arena performances.
4. Jack Irons – A New Musical Direction
1994–1998
Former RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Jack Irons brought a different musical personality to the band.
He played on No Code and Yield.
Both records demonstrated PEARL JAM’s willingness to experiment beyond the expectations associated with their early grunge success.
5. Matt Cameron – Twenty-Seven Years Of Stability
1998–2025
And then came Matt Cameron.
Originally joining after Jack Irons left, Cameron became the band’s longest-serving drummer.
His first studio album with PEARL JAM was Binaural in 2000.
He continued contributing to the group’s recordings through Dark Matter in 2024.
Across seven studio albums and countless concerts, he became an essential part of the band’s musical identity.
And replacing that experience is no small task.
🎸 What Does Pearl Jam Need From Their Next Drummer?
Let’s be honest.
Technical ability is only part of the challenge.
There are plenty of extraordinary drummers capable of playing complicated rhythms.
But joining PEARL JAM requires more than simply learning the songs.
The band’s music relies heavily on chemistry.
The relationship between bass and drums.
The way the guitars interact.
The changing intensity of Eddie Vedder’s performances.
And the ability to respond naturally when songs develop differently onstage.
PEARL JAM are famous for performances that don’t always follow the exact arrangements heard on studio recordings.
Setlists change.
Songs evolve.
And the musicians often respond to the atmosphere in the room.
A drummer needs to understand that.
🥁 It’s Not Just About Playing Fast!
Take Even Flow.
It’s got an immediately recognisable groove.
But recreating that feel requires considerably more than simply playing the correct notes.
Or think about Black.
The song relies on atmosphere and restraint as much as power.
A drummer needs to understand when to leave space.
When to build intensity.
And when to let the music breathe.
Then there’s Dark Matter, which demands a more aggressive and contemporary approach.
Whoever joins PEARL JAM must be comfortable moving between those different musical styles.
And there’s another important consideration.
Personality.
These musicians have known one another for decades.
They’ve experienced enormous success.
Difficult periods.
Personal losses.
And extraordinary moments together.
Bringing another person into that relationship requires trust.
And trust can’t necessarily be established during one afternoon of auditions.
You can’t replace 27 years of musical chemistry with a handshake and a quick drum solo, butt!
💿 Dark Matter – Matt Cameron’s Final Pearl Jam Studio Album
The band’s most recent studio album is Dark Matter, released on 19 April 2024.
Produced by Andrew Watt, the record marked PEARL JAM’s twelfth studio album.
It combined the band’s familiar alternative rock sound with energetic modern production.
The songs included Scared Of Fear, React, Respond, Wreckage, Dark Matter, Waiting For Stevie, Running and Setting Sun.
For Cameron, the album became his final studio recording with the group.
The accompanying world tour further demonstrated PEARL JAM’s continuing popularity.
And the band remained capable of delivering powerful live performances decades after their original breakthrough.
Cameron’s final concert with PEARL JAM took place on 18 May 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
At the time, fans attending the performance didn’t know that it would mark the conclusion of his extraordinary tenure.
Sometimes musical history happens without anyone realising its significance until later.
And that final performance has now become an important moment in the band’s story.
📸 Jeff Ament Releases Since Forever – A Personal Look Back At Pearl Jam’s Early Years!
Interestingly, the interview that produced this latest drummer update wasn’t originally intended to focus entirely on personnel changes.
Ament was discussing his new photography book.
Since Forever was released in September 2026.
And it’s a fascinating project for anyone interested in PEARL JAM’s history.
The hardcover collection features more than 250 black-and-white photographs, many of which had never previously been published.
The images document the band’s formative years, particularly the period between 1990 and 1998.
And they offer an unusual perspective.
Because these aren’t simply photographs taken by somebody standing at the front of a concert.
They’re images captured by a musician who was actually living through those extraordinary experiences.
Recording sessions.
Backstage moments.
Touring adventures.
Friendships.
And the countless hours between performances.
🎨 A Family Collaboration
Ament worked on the book with his brother Barry Ament, an accomplished designer.
The project began partly because Jeff had accumulated thousands of photographs and negatives over the decades.
Some of those original materials were beginning to deteriorate.
And after a close call involving water in his Montana basement, Ament recognised the importance of preserving them.
What started as an archive project eventually developed into a substantial book.
And the finished collection offers a revealing insight into PEARL JAM’s early history.
It’s particularly interesting because those photographs capture the musicians before they fully understood how enormous their careers would become.
Young musicians.
Recording music.
Playing concerts.
And simply enjoying the creative process.
Long before the global fame.
The enormous arenas.
And the complicated decisions that come with maintaining a successful band for more than three decades.

🎸 Pearl Jam – From Seattle’s Grunge Explosion To Rock Royalty!
To understand why the band’s future generates so much interest, we need to remember just how important PEARL JAM have been to rock music.
The group formed in Seattle in 1990.
Their roots stretch back to the city’s developing alternative rock scene.
Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard had previously performed with GREEN RIVER and MOTHER LOVE BONE.
Following the tragic death of MOTHER LOVE BONE frontman Andrew Wood, the musicians began working on new material.
That process eventually brought Eddie Vedder into the picture.
And PEARL JAM were born.
Their debut album Ten arrived in August 1991.
And although it didn’t become an immediate commercial phenomenon, it gradually developed into one of the defining albums of the grunge era.
Songs including:
- Alive
- Even Flow
- Jeremy
- Black
- Oceans
helped establish the band’s enormous reputation.
Alongside groups including NIRVANA, SOUNDGARDEN and ALICE IN CHAINS, PEARL JAM became associated with a movement that transformed mainstream rock music.
But unlike many of their contemporaries, PEARL JAM continued developing across the decades.
They experimented.
Changed musical direction.
Released ambitious records.
And developed one of rock’s most devoted live audiences.
Their influence remains substantial.
And that’s why the next drummer matters so much.
Whoever joins isn’t simply filling an empty position.
They’re becoming part of a remarkable musical legacy.
🐉 Could Pearl Jam Return To Cardiff Or Play A Welsh Festival In 2027?
Now then, here’s where things get particularly interesting for British and Welsh fans.
Ament says the band want to perform next year.
So naturally, people will begin wondering where those shows might happen.
Could PEARL JAM return to Britain?
Will they announce European festival appearances?
And could Wales finally enjoy another enormous evening of Seattle grunge?
Well, butt, we can certainly dream!
Imagine PEARL JAM returning to Cardiff.
The arena lights disappear.
Eddie Vedder steps towards the microphone.
Mike McCready begins one of those unmistakable guitar introductions.
And thousands of fans erupt as the band launch into Even Flow.
That would be a bloody magnificent night out!
Or perhaps a major outdoor concert somewhere in Wales.
A crowd singing every word of Alive beneath the summer sky.
And a new drummer demonstrating why they’ve been selected to join one of the world’s most respected rock bands.
Sounds rather tidy, doesn’t it?
But let’s keep our feet firmly on the ground.
No 2027 UK, European or Welsh concerts have been officially confirmed.
Ament’s statement expresses the band’s intention to perform next year.
It doesn’t establish any particular destination.
For the latest official concert information, visit:
And if new shows eventually appear, we’ll certainly be paying attention here at The Riff Report.
❤️ Supporting Grassroots Music – Every Great Drummer Started Somewhere!
Here’s another part of this story we think is worth remembering.
Every great drummer starts somewhere.
Matt Cameron didn’t arrive in the world already capable of performing enormous concerts with SOUNDGARDEN and PEARL JAM.
Abe Laboriel Jr. spent years developing his skills.
And all the extraordinary musicians who have performed with PEARL JAM had to begin by learning their instruments.
That’s why grassroots music matters so much.
Here in Cymru, there are countless talented drummers performing with independent bands.
Musicians spending their evenings rehearsing.
Working regular jobs.
Saving money for equipment.
And travelling across the country to perform in small venues.
Some will remain local performers.
Others might join established bands.
And a few could eventually find themselves playing on international stages.
But every one of them contributes something important to the music community.
And stories like PEARL JAM’s drummer search are a reminder that the person behind the kit can have an enormous influence on a band’s identity.
Great drummers don’t simply keep time. They help give music its heartbeat.
And that’s something worth celebrating.
🔥 The Riff Report Verdict – Pearl Jam Aren’t Finished Making Noise!
Well then, Riff Report crew.
This is certainly one of the most interesting periods in PEARL JAM’s recent history.
Matt Cameron has departed after 27 extraordinary years.
Abe Laboriel Jr. has stepped in for two memorable festival performances.
The band are continuing to audition musicians.
And Jeff Ament has confirmed that they want to return to the stage in 2027.
That’s a substantial amount of change for a group whose line-up had remained relatively stable for so long.
But here’s the encouraging thing.
PEARL JAM AREN’T TALKING ABOUT CALLING IT A DAY!
They’re talking about finding the right drummer.
Playing concerts.
And continuing their musical journey.
And after more than 35 years together, that’s something worth celebrating.
Of course, replacing Matt Cameron won’t be easy.
He contributed an enormous amount to the band’s music.
His drumming helped shape seven studio albums.
And his extraordinary career with SOUNDGARDEN and PEARL JAM makes him one of the most important drummers associated with Seattle’s alternative rock scene.
But every band eventually faces difficult decisions.
Musicians move on.
Priorities change.
And sometimes new creative partnerships become possible.
The important thing is handling those changes with respect.
And taking the time necessary to make the right decision.
Jeff Ament clearly understands that.
He’s enthusiastic about returning to performing.
But he’s not demanding an immediate appointment.
And that seems a sensible approach.
As for Abe Laboriel Jr.?
He’s already demonstrated that he’s capable of performing PEARL JAM’s material.
Whether he eventually joins permanently remains to be seen.
And perhaps the group will surprise everybody by choosing somebody completely unexpected.
Whatever happens, we’re certainly interested in hearing the next chapter.
Because the idea of Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament returning to the stage with renewed energy is something rock fans can get excited about.
The drum stool might still be vacant, but PEARL JAM’s musical future remains very much alive!
And if the band eventually announce a visit to Wales?
Well, butt…
We’ll have the boots ready, the cameras charged and the devil horns held high!
LONG LIVE PEARL JAM! LONG LIVE MATT CAMERON! AND KEEP THOSE SEATTLE RIFFS LOUD! 🐉🥁🔥🤘
💬 Have Your Say, Riff Report Crew!
Right then, you wonderful bunch of grunge-loving rockers!
Who do YOU think should become PEARL JAM’s permanent drummer?
Would you love to see Abe Laboriel Jr. take the position?
Should the band consider one of their former drummers?
Or would you prefer a completely new musician who could bring a fresh sound?
And here’s another question.
Would YOU travel to see PEARL JAM if they announced UK concerts in 2027?
Should they return to Cardiff?
Manchester?
London?
Glasgow?
Or perhaps headline a major rock festival?
We’d also love to hear your favourite Matt Cameron memories.
Did you ever see him performing with PEARL JAM or SOUNDGARDEN?
And which PEARL JAM song features your favourite drum performance?
Even Flow?
Jeremy?
Given To Fly?
Dark Matter?
Or something from the deeper album catalogue?
