RUSH touring drummer ANIKA NILLES has opened up about one of the most demanding jobs in progressive rock: performing the legendary drum parts of the late NEIL PEART! In a revealing new interview with ROLLING STONE CANADA, the 43-year-old German musician explained how she spent a year learning approximately 40 RUSH classics, completely rethinking elements of her own playing technique and adapting her style to capture the unmistakable feel of Peart’s performances. With GEDDY LEE and ALEX LIFESON now back on the road for their monumental Fifty Something Tour, Nilles has revealed why the challenge is about far more than simply playing the right notes.

SOME DRUMMERS HAVE BIG SHOES TO FILL. ANIKA NILLES HAS BEEN HANDED ONE OF THE MOST LEGENDARY DRUM KITS IN ROCK HISTORY! 🎸🥁🔥

When RUSH announced their return to the stage following the death of Neil Peart, one question immediately dominated conversations among fans.

Who could possibly sit behind the drum kit?

For more than four decades, Peart was one of the most respected, influential and technically accomplished drummers in rock music.

His extraordinary performances helped define the sound of RUSH, while his thoughtful songwriting and deeply personal lyrics contributed to the band’s remarkable musical identity.

Replacing him was never going to be possible.

But performing his music with the respect, precision and emotional understanding it deserves?

That was the challenge facing Anika Nilles.

Now, several months into RUSH’s hugely successful Fifty Something Tour, the German drummer has revealed just how much work went into preparing for the role.

And her comments offer a fascinating insight into the extraordinary musicianship behind some of progressive rock’s greatest recordings.

🥁 ANIKA NILLES – “I THINK I HAVE NO EGO, SO I PLAY WHAT IS REQUIRED!”

During a newly released interview with Rolling Stone Canada, Nilles discussed the delicate balance between honouring Neil Peart’s original performances and maintaining her identity as a musician.

Her approach is refreshingly straightforward.

“I think I have no ego, so I play what is required.”

For Nilles, performing with RUSH isn’t about demonstrating that she can play faster, harder or more complicated drum arrangements than anyone else.

It’s about understanding the music.

Every carefully constructed fill.

Every unusual rhythmic accent.

Every subtle change in dynamics.

And every interaction between the drums, bass, guitar and vocals.

However, that doesn’t mean she is attempting to become an exact copy of Peart.

Nilles explained that her own musical personality occasionally emerges naturally during performances.

Some sections allow room for individual expression.

Others demand a much closer interpretation of the original arrangements.

And sometimes, her instincts align so naturally with Peart’s approach that she doesn’t have to think about the differences.

It’s about finding the balance between musical respect and personal creativity.

And that balance is at the heart of her approach to RUSH.

🔥 ANIKA HAD TO CHANGE HER ENTIRE APPROACH TO DRUMMING!

One of the most interesting revelations concerns the changes Nilles made to her established playing technique.

Before joining RUSH, she had already developed an extraordinary reputation for technical precision, rhythmic complexity and musical creativity.

Her solo work frequently explores unusual time signatures, intricate grooves and jazz-fusion influences.

Those abilities made her an attractive candidate for the band.

But mastering Neil Peart’s material required something different.

Nilles explained that she had to abandon certain techniques she had spent years developing.

Why?

Because although those techniques worked perfectly within her own music, they didn’t always produce the correct feel for RUSH.

She wasn’t simply trying to play the drum parts accurately.

She wanted Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson to feel comfortable performing their own songs.

That meant adapting her approach to match the rhythmic character they had developed alongside Peart over decades.

For a musician who has spent years refining a distinctive personal style, that required considerable discipline.

And Nilles believes the experience has ultimately made her a better drummer.

Rather than weakening her musical identity, studying Peart’s compositions has expanded her understanding of rhythm, dynamics and arrangement.

💀 ‘TOM SAWYER’ PROVED TO BE ONE OF HER BIGGEST CHALLENGES!

If there’s one RUSH song that has become synonymous with Neil Peart’s extraordinary drumming, it’s Tom Sawyer.

Released on the band’s landmark 1981 album Moving Pictures, the track remains one of the most recognisable progressive rock songs ever recorded.

Its distinctive synthesiser introduction, powerful guitar arrangements and intricate rhythms made it an instant classic.

But the drumming is particularly extraordinary.

Peart combined precise rhythmic patterns with explosive fills and subtle changes in timing.

For generations of aspiring drummers, learning Tom Sawyer has become something of a musical rite of passage.

And even for a musician as accomplished as Nilles, the composition presented a considerable challenge.

She explained that the technical elements were achievable.

The real difficulty involved reproducing the distinctive feel of the original recording.

In particular, she had to reconsider the way she approached certain sixteenth-note patterns.

Rather than relying entirely on her usual refined technique, she discovered that some passages required a more physical approach.

She had to learn to produce the correct sound and rhythmic character.

And that meant playing in a way that wasn’t always natural to her.

It’s a fascinating reminder that technically accurate drumming and musically convincing drumming are not necessarily the same thing.

🥁 NEIL PEART’s DRUM PARTS WERE COMPOSITIONS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT!

One of the most revealing aspects of the interview concerns Nilles’ growing appreciation of Neil Peart as a composer.

Throughout his career, Peart developed a distinctive approach to constructing drum parts.

Rather than simply establishing a rhythm and improvising around it, he frequently created carefully developed arrangements.

Individual fills served particular musical purposes.

Rhythmic patterns supported melodic passages.

And drum accents often complemented the lyrics.

Nilles explained that studying those arrangements transformed the way she understood the music.

She began approaching Peart’s performances as complete musical compositions rather than collections of separate drum patterns.

And she believes his role as RUSH’s principal lyricist contributed significantly to that approach.

Because Peart understood the words so intimately, his drumming could interact with the vocal melodies and lyrical phrasing in unusually sophisticated ways.

This created arrangements that were both technically demanding and deeply musical.

For Nilles, appreciating that relationship became essential.

She couldn’t simply replace Peart’s rhythms with something that felt comfortable.

She needed to understand why each part existed.

🎼 FORTY RUSH SONGS – AND A FULL YEAR OF PREPARATION!

When Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson invited Nilles to rehearse with them, she knew the opportunity was extraordinary.

But she couldn’t have anticipated the sheer amount of preparation involved.

The musicians began working together in Toronto during 2025.

Over the following year, Nilles immersed herself in the RUSH catalogue.

She eventually learned approximately 40 songs, covering different periods of the band’s career.

For someone already familiar with the music, that would have been a considerable undertaking.

But Nilles faced an additional challenge.

Although she admired Peart, she had never studied RUSH’s catalogue in great detail.

She knew songs such as Tom Sawyer and Limelight.

She recognised Peart’s reputation.

And she understood his influence on progressive drumming.

However, she hadn’t spent decades listening to every album.

That meant approaching much of the material almost from scratch.

Initially, she attempted to analyse individual passages using written charts and conventional rhythmic counting.

But she quickly discovered that the band’s arrangements didn’t always work naturally through that method.

Eventually, she began memorising the drum parts as musical phrases.

Instead of concentrating exclusively on complex time signatures, she learned to hear the rhythms as melodies.

That approach helped her internalise the music and develop a more natural performance style.

🎸 GEDDY LEE AND ALEX LIFESON HAD TO REDISCOVER THEIR OWN MUSIC!

Interestingly, the preparation process also presented challenges for Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson.

The two musicians had spent decades performing alongside Neil Peart.

Their musical communication had become almost instinctive.

Rather than calculating every rhythmic change, they frequently relied on familiar musical cues.

A guitar accent might signal a transition.

A bass phrase could indicate an approaching change.

And Peart’s drum arrangements provided subtle signals that helped hold everything together.

When Nilles began asking questions about particular time signatures, Lee sometimes found himself unable to provide a straightforward answer.

The musicians had simply developed their own way of understanding the arrangements.

They didn’t always need to count the beats consciously.

They knew how the music was supposed to feel.

Bringing another drummer into that relationship required everyone to reconsider aspects of their performances.

And through that process, Lee and Lifeson gained a renewed appreciation of the musical language they had developed with Peart.

❤️ GEDDY LEE PRAISES ANIKA NILLES’ EXTRAORDINARY ABILITIES!

Geddy Lee has been particularly complimentary about the German drummer.

He first became aware of Nilles through videos of her performances online.

Her combination of technical ability, confidence and musical personality immediately caught his attention.

Lee subsequently recognised that she possessed something beyond extraordinary technique.

She had her own musical identity.

And that was essential.

RUSH weren’t searching for someone who could simply imitate Neil Peart.

They needed a musician capable of honouring the original arrangements while developing a genuine connection with the surviving members.

Lee has acknowledged that performing the material required Nilles to sacrifice certain elements of her own approach.

He also expressed pride in the way she adapted.

For the bassist, her willingness to put the music before individual recognition has been one of the most impressive aspects of the collaboration.

And judging by the enthusiastic response to the band’s 2026 performances, that dedication has paid off.

🎶 ANIKA NILLES – FROM DRUM VIDEOS TO ONE OF ROCK’S BIGGEST STAGES!

For anyone unfamiliar with Nilles’ remarkable career, her journey into professional music is particularly inspiring.

Born in Germany in 1983, she developed an interest in drumming at an early age.

However, her path into the music industry wasn’t straightforward.

Her parents encouraged her to pursue a more conventional career.

She studied social work and eventually began working at a preschool.

But her passion for music never disappeared.

At the age of 26, Nilles decided to return to formal music education and pursue drumming professionally.

It was a significant decision.

Many musicians begin their professional careers much earlier.

And Nilles initially worried that she had left things too late.

However, her dedication eventually transformed her career.

Videos showcasing her extraordinary technical abilities began attracting attention online.

Her innovative rhythmic ideas, intricate compositions and distinctive playing style quickly established a dedicated international following.

She went on to release original music and perform at drum clinics, festivals and concerts around the world.

And eventually, her abilities attracted the attention of one of Britain’s most celebrated guitarists.

🎸 WORKING WITH JEFF BECK HELPED OPEN THE DOOR TO RUSH!

Before joining RUSH, Nilles performed with legendary guitarist Jeff Beck.

The experience represented an important milestone in her professional career.

Beck was renowned for his remarkable musical sensitivity and willingness to experiment.

His performances demanded musicians who could respond naturally to unexpected changes.

For Nilles, working alongside him provided an opportunity to develop her abilities within a high-profile international touring environment.

She ultimately performed more than 60 concerts with the guitarist.

And that connection would later prove important.

During Beck’s touring activities, RUSH bassist Geddy Lee’s bass technician, John McIntosh, became aware of Nilles’ playing.

Her name subsequently emerged during discussions about finding a drummer for RUSH’s return.

For a musician who had once worried that starting her professional career at 26 might be too late, the development was extraordinary.

From working in a preschool to performing alongside Jeff Beck and eventually joining RUSH – that’s quite a musical journey!

🖤 HONOURING THE LEGACY OF NEIL PEART

Of course, every conversation about RUSH’s return inevitably leads back to Neil Peart.

The legendary drummer died on 7 January 2020, aged 67, following a battle with brain cancer.

His death was a devastating loss for the band, his family and the international music community.

Peart joined RUSH in 1974, replacing original drummer John Rutsey.

His arrival helped establish the musical direction that would define the band’s greatest recordings.

Alongside Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, he helped transform RUSH into one of progressive rock’s most influential groups.

His drumming combined extraordinary technical precision with powerful musical expression.

But he was much more than a drummer.

Peart also became the band’s principal lyricist.

His writing explored subjects including individual freedom, philosophy, literature, science fiction, personal experience and the human condition.

Songs such as The Spirit Of Radio, Freewill, Subdivisions and Time Stand Still demonstrated his ability to combine thoughtful lyrics with ambitious musical arrangements.

And his performances influenced generations of drummers across rock, metal, progressive music and jazz fusion.

Neil Peart’s legacy isn’t something another musician can replace.

But it’s a legacy that can continue inspiring new performances.

And that is precisely what Nilles is helping RUSH achieve.

🔥 RUSH RETURN WITH THE ‘FIFTY SOMETHING TOUR’!

After more than a decade away from full concert performances, RUSH returned to the stage on 7 June 2026 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

The opening concert was an emotional occasion.

For Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, it marked their first full RUSH performance since the conclusion of the band’s R40 tour in 2015.

It was also their first major tour without Neil Peart.

The Fifty Something Tour has been presented as a celebration of the band’s extraordinary musical history and a tribute to their late friend and bandmate.

Rather than treating the performances as a conventional reunion, Lee and Lifeson have emphasised the importance of honouring Peart’s contribution.

The shows feature an extensive selection of material from across RUSH’s catalogue.

And with Nilles behind the kit, the band have been able to revisit some of their most demanding compositions.

The concerts have also introduced an additional musician.

Loren Gold, known for his work with THE WHO and Roger Daltrey, has joined the touring lineup on keyboards.

This arrangement allows Lee to concentrate more consistently on bass and vocals during sections involving complicated keyboard parts.

Together, the musicians are presenting a celebration of more than 50 years of RUSH music.

🎤 THE SETLIST CHANGES FROM NIGHT TO NIGHT!

One of the most exciting aspects of the Fifty Something Tour is the decision to rotate songs between performances.

Rather than delivering exactly the same concert every evening, RUSH have prepared an extensive catalogue of material.

The musicians have rehearsed more than 40 songs, allowing them to vary the setlist throughout the tour.

That flexibility makes Nilles’ role even more demanding.

It’s one thing to learn a technically complicated set of songs.

It’s another to prepare dozens of arrangements and remain ready to perform different combinations at successive concerts.

For fans, however, the approach makes each performance particularly exciting.

Classic songs such as Tom Sawyer, Limelight, The Spirit Of Radio, YYZ, Subdivisions and 2112 are among the material associated with the band’s legendary live performances.

The tour has provided opportunities to hear music from several decades of RUSH’s career.

And because the setlists vary, fans attending multiple shows can experience different selections.

For Nilles, it means constantly maintaining an extraordinary level of preparation.

🥁 WHY NEIL PEART’S DRUMMING IS SO DIFFICULT TO RECREATE

One of the most fascinating aspects of Nilles’ interview is how clearly she explains the difference between technical ability and musical interpretation.

Peart’s arrangements frequently involve unusual time signatures.

But the real challenge goes considerably deeper.

⚡ Understanding The Rhythmic Structure

RUSH frequently used arrangements that moved between different rhythmic groupings.

Songs such as Tom Sawyer, YYZ and La Villa Strangiato demonstrate the band’s willingness to challenge conventional rock structures.

For a drummer, those transitions demand precise coordination.

🎼 Treating The Drums As A Musical Instrument

Peart didn’t simply use his kit to maintain a steady beat.

His compositions featured carefully developed rhythmic phrases that interacted with other instruments.

Nilles has explained that understanding those patterns as melodies helped her memorise the music.

🥁 Capturing The Original Feel

A technically perfect performance can still sound different from the original.

Small variations in dynamics, attack and phrasing can fundamentally change the musical character.

Nilles has spent considerable time adjusting those details.

🔥 Maintaining Physical Endurance

RUSH concerts involve long performances with numerous technically demanding songs.

For a drummer, maintaining consistency throughout the evening requires exceptional concentration and stamina.

❤️ Respecting The Original Without Losing Individuality

Perhaps the greatest challenge is finding an appropriate balance.

Nilles wants to honour the compositions fans know and love.

But she also brings her own experience and musical personality.

Her solution is to allow the original music to determine how much individual interpretation is appropriate.

And that’s a thoughtful approach to an extraordinary responsibility.

🇬🇧 RUSH RETURN TO THE UK IN MARCH 2027!

British progressive rock fans will have their own opportunity to experience RUSH’s new touring lineup next year.

The band have announced seven UK arena concerts during March 2027.

The performances will take place in Glasgow, Manchester and London.

For longtime supporters, the dates represent a particularly significant return.

RUSH last performed in the United Kingdom during their Clockwork Angels touring era in 2013.

That means the upcoming concerts will mark their first UK appearances in approximately 14 years.

Ticket availability varies between dates, and several performances have already experienced exceptionally strong demand.

🎟️ RUSH – OFFICIAL 2026 AND 2027 TOUR DATES AND TICKETS

🐉 A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR RUSH FANS ACROSS WALES!

For progressive rock fans in Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and across Wales, the UK dates provide an opportunity to experience one of rock’s most important bands.

Although no Welsh concert is currently included in the itinerary, the Manchester and London performances may be practical options for fans planning to travel.

And considering how long it’s been since RUSH last performed in Britain, these concerts are particularly significant.

For anyone who never had the chance to see Neil Peart perform, the upcoming tour offers a different but meaningful way to experience his music.

And for longtime supporters who attended earlier tours, the concerts provide an opportunity to revisit the band’s catalogue while celebrating his legacy.

The experience will inevitably feel different.

But that doesn’t mean it cannot be powerful.

Sometimes, the opportunity to hear music performed again is itself a celebration.

🎸 ANIKA NILLES IS BECOMING A RUSH FAN HERSELF!

Perhaps one of the most charming revelations from the interview is that Nilles has developed a much deeper appreciation of RUSH while performing their music.

Before joining the band, she knew Peart’s reputation and had admired selected performances.

But she had never completely immersed herself in the group’s catalogue.

Now, after spending so much time learning the material, she has become a genuine fan.

She described the experience of playing with Lee and Lifeson as increasingly enjoyable once the arrangements became natural.

Instead of concentrating entirely on remembering every fill and transition, she can now relax enough to appreciate the music.

And she has discovered just how much energy the two musicians bring to the stage.

That enthusiasm is particularly important.

Nilles isn’t simply performing the songs because she’s been hired to do so.

She’s developing a genuine emotional connection with the material.

And as the tour continues, that relationship is likely to become an important part of her performances.

💀 THE PRESSURE OF PLAYING IN NEIL PEART’S SHADOW

There is another aspect of this story that deserves recognition.

When Nilles accepted the opportunity to perform with RUSH, she wasn’t simply joining another established rock band.

She was stepping into one of the most closely scrutinised positions in progressive music.

Neil Peart’s influence is enormous.

Fans have spent decades studying his drum arrangements.

Many can identify individual fills immediately.

Some have memorised every detail of the band’s recordings.

And others regard Peart as the greatest rock drummer of all time.

That creates considerable pressure for anyone performing his material.

Every note can be analysed.

Every interpretation can be compared with the original.

And every change risks attracting criticism.

But Nilles appears to have approached the responsibility with remarkable maturity.

Rather than allowing those expectations to overwhelm her, she has concentrated on the music itself.

She has worked to understand the compositions.

Adapted her technique.

Listened carefully to Lee and Lifeson.

And gradually developed the confidence to allow her own personality to emerge.

That isn’t simply a demonstration of technical ability.

It’s a demonstration of musical intelligence, discipline and respect.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT – ANIKA NILLES IS HONOURING A LEGEND WHILE WRITING HER OWN CHAPTER!

Anika Nilles’ latest interview offers a fascinating insight into the extraordinary preparation required to perform with RUSH.

Taking over the drum chair of Neil Peart was never going to be easy.

In fact, for many musicians, it would be one of the most intimidating opportunities imaginable.

Peart wasn’t simply a technically gifted drummer.

He was a composer.

A lyricist.

A musical innovator.

And an essential part of RUSH’s identity.

His arrangements helped define some of progressive rock’s most celebrated recordings.

And reproducing those performances requires far more than the ability to play complicated rhythms.

Nilles understood that from the beginning.

Rather than attempting to reinvent the songs around her own musical preferences, she committed herself to understanding the original compositions.

She spent a year learning approximately 40 tracks.

She reconsidered techniques she had spent years perfecting.

And she developed a deeper appreciation for the subtle musical relationships that made RUSH so special.

Perhaps most importantly, she recognised that her role wasn’t about competing with Neil Peart.

It was about respecting the music he helped create.

At the same time, she hasn’t abandoned her own identity.

Her distinctive playing occasionally emerges during performances, adding subtle new details without losing the spirit of the original arrangements.

And with the approval of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, she is helping the band celebrate more than five decades of extraordinary music.

For anyone who has followed RUSH throughout their career, that is something worth appreciating.

Neil Peart will always be irreplaceable.

But his legacy doesn’t have to remain confined to recordings and memories.

It can continue inspiring musicians and audiences.

And Anika Nilles is helping make that possible.

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
