Slaughter To Prevail frontman Alex Terrible has once again confronted the controversies that have followed him and his band, insisting that while he has made mistakes in his past, he is not a Nazi and does not want to hurt or discriminate against anyone.

Few vocalists in modern metal generate quite as much noise away from the microphone as Alex Terrible.

As the unmistakable, mask-wearing frontman of deathcore wrecking crew Slaughter To Prevail, Alex has become one of extreme metalโ€™s most recognisable figures โ€” famous for those ridiculous gutturals, an intimidating physique and an online presence thatโ€™s rarely what youโ€™d call quiet.

But alongside the bandโ€™s enormous rise has come controversy.

A lot of it.

Now, Alex is addressing it again.

Speaking in a new interview with Metal Hammer, the vocalist discussed the accusations and criticism that have followed him for years, from his past associations and controversial tattoos to accusations of homophobia and transphobia.

And Alexโ€™s position is pretty straightforward.

โ€œI didnโ€™t kill anybody, I didnโ€™t bully anybody. I just made some stupid mistakes โ€” and I am not a Nazi.โ€

Itโ€™s a statement unlikely to make the debate disappear overnight, but Alex appears determined to explain how he views his past โ€” including admitting that some of his decisions were, in his own words, stupid.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Controversies That Have Followed Alex Terrible

A major part of the criticism surrounding Alex stems from imagery and associations from his younger years.

Most notably, the vocalist previously had a Black Sun tattoo, a symbol that has historical associations with Nazi imagery and has subsequently been adopted by neo-Nazi and white supremacist movements.

Alex has since had the tattoo covered.

He has previously explained that during his younger years in Russia he spent time around right-wing individuals, while maintaining that the tattoo wasnโ€™t intended as a declaration of Nazi beliefs.

That hasnโ€™t stopped the questions.

Other controversies have included photographs involving controversial imagery, wearing clothing associated with figures from the far-right scene and previously promoting music from a band he himself described as Nazi.

Alex has admitted that some of those decisions were stupid.

During a lengthy 2025 appearance on The Downbeat podcast, he accepted responsibility for some of his behaviour, particularly a photograph involving an SS helmet.

He acknowledged that being around 19 or 20 years old wasnโ€™t enough of an excuse.

In his words at the time, he understood that he was now โ€œpaying the priceโ€ for those decisions.

๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Then Came The LGBTQ+ Controversies

The criticism surrounding Alex hasnโ€™t only centred on political imagery.

He has also faced accusations of homophobia and transphobia following various comments and social-media posts.

One particularly controversial moment came in 2023 when Alex posted a tongue-in-cheek video titled โ€œ4 Rules Of Real Manโ€.

What Alex apparently intended as exaggerated macho humour was interpreted very differently by some viewers.

His subsequent response โ€” in which he talked about being straight, having โ€œtraditional family valuesโ€ and his opposition to what he described as propaganda directed towards children โ€” only poured another tanker of petrol onto an already raging internet bonfire.

Alex has subsequently denied being racist, homophobic or transphobic.

But the controversy exploded again following Slaughter To Prevailโ€™s appearance at Bloodstock Open Air 2026.

๐Ÿค˜ Bloodstock Put Alex Back Under The Microscope

Slaughter To Prevailโ€™s Bloodstock appearance became another flashpoint in the ongoing argument surrounding the band.

After their performance, Alex responded online to calls for him to apologise to the trans community.

Initially, he said he genuinely didnโ€™t understand exactly what he was expected to apologise for and asked people to explain it to him.

He then posted a sarcastic apology referring to Slaughter To Prevail playing Bloodstock to an enthusiastic crowd.

That didnโ€™t exactly calm things down.

However, Alex later deleted the posts after apparently reconsidering the potential effect of what heโ€™d written.

He acknowledged that his comments could encourage others to bully people โ€” something he said wasnโ€™t his intention.

And that distinction seems central to what Alex is now trying to communicate.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ โ€œI Am Not A Naziโ€

Alexโ€™s argument isnโ€™t that everything heโ€™s ever done has been sensible.

Quite the opposite.

Heโ€™s openly describing some of his past behaviour as stupid.

What heโ€™s pushing back against is the idea that those actions provide a complete picture of who he is today.

The vocalist says the version of himself people encounter through controversial screenshots, old photographs and internet discussions is often dramatically different from the person people encounter face-to-face.

He has also spoken about becoming accustomed to online criticism.

For Alex, there appears to be a huge disconnect between his experiences within the metal community in real life and the conversations surrounding him online.

And letโ€™s face it โ€” once the internet has decided who you are, changing that perception can be harder than surviving a Slaughter To Prevail pit wearing flip-flops.

๐Ÿป Slaughter To Prevail Keep Getting Bigger

Whatever your opinion on Alex Terrible, thereโ€™s no denying that the controversies havenโ€™t stopped Slaughter To Prevailโ€™s rise.

Formed in 2014, the band have grown from underground deathcore brutality into one of the biggest names in modern extreme metal.

Tracks such as Demolisher, Baba Yaga, Viking, 1984 and Kid Of Darkness have helped transform the group into a genuine international force.

Their combination of crushing breakdowns, nu-metal influences, deathcore aggression and Alexโ€™s absolutely monstrous vocals has attracted an enormous following.

Their latest album, Grizzly, released in 2025, pushed the band further into the metal mainstream.

Theyโ€™re no longer some terrifying little deathcore band lurking in the darkest corner of the festival poster.

Theyโ€™re one of the names printed in bloody massive letters.

And with that success comes scrutiny.

Lots of it.

โš–๏ธ Can Someone Move Beyond Their Past?

Thatโ€™s ultimately the bigger conversation here.

Alex isnโ€™t denying that controversial things happened.

Heโ€™s acknowledging mistakes while disputing the conclusions some people have drawn from them.

For some fans, covering the controversial tattoo, speaking openly about his past and repeatedly denying extremist beliefs will demonstrate that heโ€™s changed.

Others will understandably argue that words alone arenโ€™t enough and that some of his previous actions deserve continued scrutiny.

And there will be plenty sitting somewhere between those two positions.

Thatโ€™s the tricky thing about growth.

People absolutely can change.

But nobody else is obligated to immediately forget what came before.

Accountability and redemption arenโ€™t necessarily opposites.

๐ŸŽค The Riff Report Take

This is one of those stories where shouting โ€œCASE CLOSED!โ€ in either direction doesnโ€™t really help anyone.

Alex Terrible has made controversial decisions.

Heโ€™s admitted that himself.

Some of the imagery involved carries horrific historical and modern associations, and people arenโ€™t unreasonable for asking questions about it.

At the same time, if somebody genuinely rejects extremist ideology and recognises that previous behaviour was stupid or harmful, there has to be room in society for people to demonstrate that theyโ€™ve changed.

Otherwise, whatโ€™s the point of asking anybody to learn from their mistakes?

The important bit isnโ€™t pretending the past never happened.

Itโ€™s what someone does afterwards.

Alexโ€™s message today is clear: he doesnโ€™t consider himself a Nazi, racist, homophobe or transphobe, and he believes some of the decisions he made when he was younger have created a public image that no longer represents him.

Whether that explanation changes anyoneโ€™s opinion?

Thatโ€™s going to be up to individual fans.

Because if thereโ€™s one certainty here, itโ€™s that the debate surrounding Alex Terrible isnโ€™t disappearing anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Slaughter To Prevail will presumably continue doing what Slaughter To Prevail do best โ€” turning festival fields into absolute carnage and producing breakdowns capable of rearranging your garden furniture from three streets away.

Proper subtle stuff, mun. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ˜‚

What do you reckon? Can musicians move beyond controversial decisions from their past, or are there some things that should follow an artist throughout their career?

๐Ÿ”ฅ Keep it loud. Keep it respectful. Keep the conversation going.

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
