Twenty years. Countless breakdowns. Mountains of black clothing. Enough hairspray to punch a hole through the atmosphere. And now, finally, a Metal Hammer cover. 🖤🔥

Motionless In White are celebrating a massive milestone in their career as the Pennsylvania metalcore giants mark 20 years as a band — and they’re doing it by appearing on their first-ever cover of Metal Hammer.

For a band that has spent two decades carving out its own dark corner of the heavy music world, it feels like one of those proper “about bloody time” moments.

And frontman Chris Motionless isn’t looking backwards for long.

Speaking about the work that has gone into the band’s next chapter, Chris delivered one hell of a statement:

“I ground myself to the bone for this record.”

Crikey.

Whatever Motionless In White have cooking, it certainly doesn’t sound like they’ve been sitting around drinking tea and admiring the anniversary cake.

🖤 20 Years Of Motionless In White

Formed in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 2005, Motionless In White emerged during an era when metalcore, emo, goth and alternative culture were exploding.

But while plenty of bands from that generation disappeared, changed beyond recognition or became nostalgic reunion fodder, Motionless In White kept moving.

And evolving.

The early years were raw, aggressive and soaked in the sounds of metalcore and gothic horror.

Then came bigger choruses.

Industrial electronics.

Nu-metal influences.

Arena-sized production.

And breakdowns capable of making an unsuspecting festival tent collectively lose its bloody mind. 🤘

Through albums including Creatures, Infamous, Reincarnate, Graveyard Shift, Disguise and Scoring the End of the World, the band steadily transformed themselves from underground metalcore hopefuls into one of modern heavy music’s biggest acts.

And importantly, they did it without abandoning the weirdness.

💀 The Goth Kids Won, Mun

There has always been something wonderfully unapologetic about Motionless In White.

Black leather.

Make-up.

Horror imagery.

Industrial electronics.

Huge riffs.

Massive choruses.

And the occasional breakdown that sounds like someone has dropped a building onto another building.

Lovely stuff.

They took elements of goth, metalcore, industrial metal and nu-metal and built something instantly recognisable.

You don’t generally need someone to tell you when a Motionless In White track comes on.

You bloody know.

And Chris Motionless has become one of modern metal’s most recognisable frontmen in the process.

🔥 From Creatures To Scoring The End Of The World

The band’s journey becomes even more impressive when you look at just how dramatically their sound has developed.

2010’s Creatures remains sacred territory for many longtime fans — a wonderfully filthy slab of metalcore that helped establish their identity.

But Motionless In White weren’t interested in recording Creatures Part II forever.

Infamous pushed towards industrial territory.

Reincarnate expanded the theatrical side of the band.

Graveyard Shift brought increasingly enormous hooks.

Then Disguise and Scoring the End of the World helped push Motionless In White into another league entirely.

The latter, released in 2022, included tracks such as “Cyberhex,” “Masterpiece,” “Werewolf” and “Slaughterhouse”, featuring Knocked Loose frontman Bryan Garris.

“Masterpiece” in particular demonstrated just how far the band’s songwriting had travelled.

Yes, Motionless In White could still smash you over the head with a breakdown.

But they could also write a bloody enormous emotional rock anthem.

That’s a dangerous combination.

🎤 “I Ground Myself To The Bone For This Record”

And that brings us to what comes next.

Chris Motionless describing himself as having “ground myself to the bone” for the record gives you some idea of the level of commitment involved.

After two decades, it would be understandable for a band to settle into a comfortable rhythm.

Write album.

Tour album.

Festival season.

Repeat until someone needs a new hip.

Motionless In White don’t appear interested in doing that.

Instead, everything surrounding their next era suggests a band still determined to push itself.

That’s important.

Because reaching 20 years isn’t particularly impressive if you’re simply surviving.

Motionless In White are still progressing.

🏆 Their First Metal Hammer Cover

Which makes their first Metal Hammer cover feel especially significant.

Metal Hammer has documented generations of heavy music, from legendary metal pioneers through thrash, nu-metal, metalcore and the constantly evolving modern scene.

For Motionless In White to finally land their first cover while celebrating two decades together feels beautifully timed.

It’s recognition not just of where they are now, but of the frankly ridiculous amount of graft required to get there.

Twenty years ago, they were another young band attempting to make noise in Pennsylvania.

Now they’re festival heavyweights with millions of fans, huge tours and songs that have become staples of modern alternative culture.

Not bad going, butt. 🤘

🦇 They Survived The Scene — Then Became One Of Its Biggest Bands

There’s another important part of the Motionless In White story.

They survived.

Think about how dramatically heavy music has changed since 2005.

MySpace came and went.

Emo exploded.

Metalcore exploded.

Dubstep invaded everything for five minutes.

Nu-metal somehow became uncool and then spectacularly cool again.

TikTok arrived.

Streaming transformed the music industry.

Skinny jeans nearly cut off the circulation of an entire generation.

Through all of it, Motionless In White remained relevant.

More impressively, their audience grew.

Younger fans discovered the band alongside people who had been there since the Creatures days.

That’s something very few bands manage.

🤘 Modern Metal Needs Bands Like Motionless In White

There’s sometimes a tendency within rock and metal to spend too much time looking backwards.

We love the classics at The Riff Report.

Obviously.

Give us Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica and Priest until the sun burns out.

But heavy music needs bands capable of becoming tomorrow’s legendary names as well.

Motionless In White are increasingly looking like one of them.

They’ve already got the catalogue.

They’ve got the visual identity.

They’ve got the enormous live shows.

They’ve got a fiercely dedicated fanbase.

And crucially, after 20 years, they’ve still got something to prove.

That might be the most exciting part.

🔥 Twenty Years Down — What Comes Next?

A twentieth anniversary could easily become an exercise in nostalgia.

Old photographs.

Anniversary merch.

A few retrospective interviews.

Everyone remembers MySpace and complains about their knees.

But Motionless In White appear much more interested in asking:

“What can we do next?”

And if Chris Motionless really has pushed himself as hard as his comments suggest while making the next record, expectations are going to be absolutely enormous.

Following Scoring the End of the World isn’t an easy job.

But Motionless In White have spent their entire career refusing to take the easy route.

Twenty years after they started making noise in Scranton, they’re bigger, stranger and more ambitious than ever.

And now they’ve finally got that Metal Hammer cover to stick on the wall.

Twenty years of riffs. Twenty years of darkness. Twenty years of breakdowns.

Here’s to whatever chaos comes next. 🖤🤘🔥

Happy 20th anniversary, Motionless In White.

From scrappy Pennsylvania metalcore beginnings to becoming one of modern metal’s defining bands…

That’s a proper journey, mun.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
