Stepping behind the drum kit for Rush would be intimidating enough. Stepping behind the kit once occupied by Neil bloody Peart? That’s a completely different level of pressure.

But before Anika Nilles faced one of the biggest nights of her career, she received a deeply personal message of support from someone whose blessing surely meant more than almost anyone else’s — Neil Peart’s widow, Carrie Nuttall-Peart.

And if that doesn’t hit you squarely in the feels, check your pulse, butt. 🥁❤️

For Nilles, joining Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson as Rush returned to the concert stage meant taking on one of the most scrutinised drumming jobs imaginable.

Nobody can replace Neil Peart.

Nobody should even try.

Instead, Nilles faced the enormous challenge of respecting the music, bringing her own abilities to it and performing songs containing some of the most legendary drum parts in rock history.

Before that first concert, however, she received some welcome reassurance.

❤️ A Message That Meant Everything

Speaking about the experience, Nilles revealed that Carrie had contacted her ahead of the show.

She described receiving a “really lovely message” from Neil’s widow and explained how reassuring it was to know that Carrie supported what Rush were doing.

That is some serious emotional weight right there.

For all the discussion surrounding Rush continuing without Peart, the support of his family carries a significance that goes far beyond reviews, social media arguments or whether Dave from Facebook thinks Rush should have packed everything away forever in 2015.

Carrie and Neil’s daughter Olivia had already publicly expressed their support for Lee and Lifeson moving forward with Rush.

And for the drummer actually sitting behind that enormous kit?

That reassurance must have been priceless.

🥁 Imagine Sitting Behind THAT Drum Kit

Seriously.

Imagine it.

You walk onto the stage.

Geddy Lee is over there.

Alex Lifeson is over there.

Thousands of Rush fans are staring at you.

Then you look down and realise you’re about to play songs originally performed by Neil Peart.

No pressure then. 😳

Peart wasn’t simply Rush’s drummer. He was one of the musicians who completely changed what rock drumming could be.

His precision, creativity, enormous kits, intricate arrangements and ability to make ridiculously complicated passages somehow sound musical turned him into an icon.

Then there were the lyrics.

Peart wasn’t merely sitting at the back keeping time while Geddy and Alex did their thing. He was a fundamental part of Rush’s identity.

Following his death in January 2020, aged 67, the idea of Rush performing again without him seemed almost impossible.

Which is exactly why whoever eventually occupied that drum stool was always going to face extraordinary scrutiny.

Enter Anika Nilles.

🤘 Not Replacing Neil — Continuing the Music

This is probably the most important distinction.

Nilles isn’t replacing Neil Peart.

You can’t.

The same way you couldn’t simply replace John Bonham in Led Zeppelin or Keith Moon in The Who and pretend nothing happened, Peart’s contribution to Rush is permanently woven into the band’s DNA.

Instead, this new chapter is about allowing the music to live.

And Nilles brings some absolutely frightening chops of her own.

The German drummer has developed a formidable reputation thanks to her technical ability, creativity and precision, earning respect throughout the international drumming community.

Rush weren’t exactly going to stick an advert in the local paper saying:

“DRUMMER WANTED. MUST KNOW TOM SAWYER. OWN TRANSPORT PREFERRED.”

😂🥁

This required somebody capable of navigating compositions that have terrified generations of drummers.

Nilles got the call.

🔥 Rush Return to the Stage

Rush played their first full concert since 2015 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on 7 June 2026.

Eleven years.

Think about that.

More than a decade had passed since Rush had played a complete concert.

Peart’s death understandably appeared to close the book completely, with Lee and Lifeson subsequently pursuing other projects and occasionally performing together without formally restarting Rush.

But eventually something shifted.

The desire to play those songs again remained.

And when the lights finally went down in Los Angeles, a new chapter began.

There was Geddy.

There was Alex.

And behind the drums was Anika Nilles.

🥁❤️ Neil Wasn’t Forgotten

One particularly beautiful moment came through Nilles’ own tribute to Peart.

She placed a pair of Neil Peart Signature 747 drumsticks on her drum riser.

Simple.

No enormous speech required.

No dramatic ceremony.

Just a pair of sticks belonging symbolically to the man whose musical legacy surrounded everything happening that evening.

Nilles later reflected that Neil had been “with us” on the riser that night.

That’s how you do it.

Respect the past without attempting to recreate it.

Acknowledge the person who made the music possible while finding a way to carry those songs into another chapter.

Proper classy. ❤️

🎤 Rush Without Neil Peart Will Always Spark Debate

Of course, there will always be fans who don’t want Rush continuing without Peart.

That’s understandable.

For many people, Rush means Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart.

End of story.

The chemistry between those three musicians created something extraordinary across decades of albums and touring.

But there’s another way of looking at it.

Those songs still exist.

Geddy and Alex are still here.

They still love playing together.

Thousands upon thousands of Rush fans still desperately want to hear that music performed live.

And crucially, Peart’s family has supported them doing it.

Nobody is pretending the past hasn’t happened.

Nobody is erasing Neil.

Quite the opposite.

Every time one of those legendary drum parts rings around an arena, Peart’s influence is right there.

🤘 What a Job Anika Nilles Has Taken On

There are difficult gigs.

There are intimidating gigs.

And then there’s becoming the drummer performing Rush songs after Neil Peart.

Every fill will be examined.

Every interpretation will be discussed.

Every tiny change will be noticed by somebody who has listened to the original recording approximately 47,000 times and knows precisely what Neil played at 4:32.

Rush fans know their stuff.

They REALLY know their stuff. 😂

But perhaps that’s what makes Nilles such an interesting choice.

She doesn’t need to impersonate Peart.

She needs to respect the compositions while still being Anika Nilles.

That’s a much healthier way of approaching the impossible task sitting in front of her.

❤️ A Blessing Bigger Than Any Review

Ultimately, though, the story of that first Rush concert isn’t just about technical ability.

It’s about emotion.

It’s about three musicians navigating an extraordinary legacy.

It’s about fans hearing songs they thought they might never experience live again.

And it’s about a drummer walking onto a stage knowing perfectly well whose shadow hangs over that drum riser.

Before doing so, Nilles received encouragement from Neil Peart’s widow.

For someone entering one of rock music’s most emotionally complicated positions, you’d struggle to imagine a more meaningful message.

Carrie’s support doesn’t suddenly make everyone agree about Rush continuing.

Rock fans agreeing about something?

Steady on, mun. 😂

But it does show that this chapter is being approached with love and respect for the man who helped build everything that came before it.

🥁 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Anika Nilles has one of the toughest jobs in rock music.

She’s playing songs associated with a drummer whose influence stretches across generations and whose relationship with Rush fans goes far beyond simply being “the bloke behind the kit”.

But she isn’t there to erase Neil Peart.

She isn’t there to become Neil Peart.

She’s there to help Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson keep this incredible music alive.

And knowing that Carrie Nuttall-Peart reached out before that enormous first night makes the whole thing considerably more emotional.

The Professor may no longer be sitting behind that kit.

But every fill, every ridiculous time signature and every Rush fan air-drumming themselves into an elbow injury ensures his legacy isn’t going anywhere.

Neil Peart forever. Rush forever. And fair play to Anika Nilles for accepting one hell of a challenge. 🥁❤️🤘

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. 🐉🤘

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
