🥁 PHIL COLLINS REVEALS THE RAW EMOTION BEHIND FACE VALUE — “I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WAS SINGING ABOUT”

There are albums written because somebody has a record contract.

There are albums written because somebody has a collection of songs ready to go.

And then there are albums that exist because somebody’s entire bloody life has fallen apart and music becomes the place where all that anger, hurt and confusion ends up.

Phil Collins’ Face Value belongs firmly in that final category.

Released in 1981, Collins’ debut solo album gave the world one of the most instantly recognisable songs — and certainly one of the most famous drum moments — in music history:

“In the Air Tonight.”

But looking back at the circumstances surrounding Face Value, Collins admitted something fascinating.

At the time he was writing some of those songs, he didn’t necessarily understand what was coming out.

“To me it was just the sound of the words… I didn’t know what I was singing about.”

Bloody hell.

Sometimes the song knows before the songwriter does. 🥁🔥

💔 A RECORD BORN FROM A MARRIAGE FALLING APART

Face Value emerged during an extremely turbulent period in Collins’ personal life.

His first marriage was breaking down, leaving him dealing with the emotional fallout while his musical career with Genesis continued.

Rather than sitting down with some grand masterplan to launch himself as a solo superstar, Collins began writing.

And writing.

And writing.

What emerged was intensely personal.

The emotions surrounding his divorce — anger, bitterness, sadness, frustration and hurt — found their way into the music, sometimes without Collins consciously setting out to write about any one specific thing.

That is what makes his reflection on the record so revealing.

He wasn’t necessarily sitting there thinking:

“Right then, I’m going to write a devastating song about divorce now.”

The emotions were simply coming out.

Music first.

Understanding later.

Anyone who has ever written something while going through a rough patch will probably recognise that feeling immediately.

Sometimes you don’t realise what you’ve written until you’ve had enough distance to look back at it.

🌩️ THEN CAME “IN THE AIR TONIGHT”

And out of that emotional storm came “In the Air Tonight.”

You know the one.

Of course you bloody know the one.

Even people who claim they don’t know Phil Collins somehow know exactly what to do when that moment arrives.

BA-DUM BA-DUM BA-DUM BA-DUM DUM DUM.

Air drummers of Britain, your time has come. 😂🥁

But beneath that enormous drum fill is a song absolutely dripping with tension.

It doesn’t explode immediately.

It stalks.

It broods.

It waits.

There’s something uncomfortable hanging over the entire track, as though you’re listening to somebody trying desperately to keep their emotions under control.

Then the drums arrive.

And suddenly it feels like the entire song has snapped.

Collins himself described the feelings behind it in terms of anger, bitterness and hurt, with all those emotions feeding into “In the Air Tonight”.

That legendary drum entrance almost feels like the moment restraint disappears completely.

Not just a drum fill.

A release.

🤯 “I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WAS SINGING ABOUT”

That’s perhaps the most fascinating thing about Collins’ recollection.

For decades, people have tried to decode “In the Air Tonight”.

There have been endless stories about what the lyrics supposedly mean.

One particularly persistent urban legend claimed Collins witnessed someone drowning and later confronted somebody who could have helped but didn’t.

It’s a cracking bit of rock folklore.

It’s also not the actual story behind the song.

The reality is arguably far more interesting.

The lyrics emerged from Collins improvising and allowing words and emotions to appear naturally.

He wasn’t constructing some elaborate murder mystery.

He was processing what was happening inside his own head.

That’s why the lyrics can feel mysterious.

They’re emotional rather than literal.

You don’t necessarily need to know exactly what every line means because you understand what the song feels like.

And sometimes that’s far more powerful.

🎤 PHIL COLLINS STEPPING OUT ON HIS OWN

It’s easy now to forget just how significant Face Value became.

Collins was already famous through Genesis, having originally joined the band as drummer before eventually taking over lead vocals following Peter Gabriel’s departure.

But becoming a successful solo artist was another matter entirely.

Then Face Value landed.

And absolutely flew.

The album reached Number One on the UK Albums Chart, beginning a solo career that would eventually turn Collins into one of the biggest recording artists of the 1980s.

Suddenly the drummer from Genesis wasn’t merely stepping forward from behind the kit.

He was becoming a global superstar.

And Face Value wasn’t simply Genesis with a different badge slapped on the front.

Collins explored soul, pop, atmospheric rock and deeply personal songwriting while still bringing that unmistakable rhythmic instinct of a drummer.

It sounded like somebody discovering exactly what kind of artist he could be.

🥁 THAT DRUM SOUND CHANGED EVERYTHING

We can’t talk about Face Value without talking about the drums.

Especially those drums.

The huge gated-reverb sound associated with “In the Air Tonight” became one of the defining production sounds of the decade.

You can practically hear the ’80s arriving when that drum fill kicks in.

And what makes the moment so effective isn’t simply how massive the drums sound.

It’s when they arrive.

The song makes you wait.

And wait.

And wait.

Then…

BOOM.

It’s musical delayed gratification on an industrial scale.

Forty-five years later, people still stop whatever they’re doing and mime that fill.

Steering wheel?

Drum kit.

Desk?

Drum kit.

Knees?

Drum kit.

Shopping trolley?

Probably best not, mun. 😂

🎶 FACE VALUE WAS MUCH MORE THAN ONE SONG

“In the Air Tonight” naturally dominates conversations about the album, but Face Value had plenty more going on.

Songs including “I Missed Again,” “If Leaving Me Is Easy,” “Behind the Lines” and “The Roof Is Leaking” showed different sides of Collins as a songwriter and performer.

The album moved between vulnerability, anger, soul influences, experimentation and huge pop instincts.

It wasn’t simply an album containing a massive single.

It was the beginning of an entirely new chapter.

And considering Collins apparently wasn’t initially working from some calculated plan to become one of the biggest solo artists on Earth, what followed is pretty remarkable.

📺 CLASSIC ALBUMS: FACE VALUE

Collins’ comments were explored in the 1999 documentary Classic Albums: Phil Collins – Face Value, which looked closely at how the record came together and the circumstances surrounding its creation.

Hearing Collins discuss the songs years after making them adds another layer to the album.

Because hindsight allows him to recognise emotions that perhaps weren’t completely obvious to him while he was actually writing.

That’s the beautiful — and occasionally terrifying — thing about songwriting.

You can accidentally leave pieces of yourself inside a song.

Then millions of strangers spend the next four decades listening to them.

❤️ SOMETIMES THE BEST SONGS AREN’T PLANNED

There’s something wonderfully human about Collins admitting:

“I didn’t know what I was singing about.”

Because great songwriting isn’t always about sitting down with a perfectly formed concept.

Sometimes it’s instinct.

Sometimes it’s improvisation.

Sometimes it’s three chords and something you desperately need to get out of your system.

And occasionally, if the stars align, it becomes “In the Air Tonight.”

A song born from emotional chaos became one of the most recognisable recordings of its generation.

An album created during one of the most difficult periods of Collins’ life launched one of the biggest solo careers in British music.

And a drum fill lasting only a few seconds became immortal.

Not bad for somebody trying to make sense of what was rattling around inside his head.

That, butt, is the strange magic of music. 🤘🥁❤️

Sometimes you write the song.

Sometimes the song writes you.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT

Were you there when Face Value first landed in 1981?

And be honest…

Have you EVER heard “In the Air Tonight” without air-drumming that legendary fill? 😂🥁

We don’t believe you.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. 🐉🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
