D. Randall Blythe (2015) – Book Review

Author: D. Randall Blythe
Published: 2015
Genre: Autobiography / Heavy Metal / Memoir
Riff Report Rating: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 5/5

Some metal memoirs give you the tour bus.

Some give you the booze.

Some give you the backstage carnage, broken hotel furniture and stories that usually begin with:

“So we were absolutely hammered in Germany…”

D. Randall Blythe’s Dark Days: A Memoir gives you something considerably heavier.

A prison cell.

Fear.

Sobriety.

Responsibility.

Death.

And the terrifying experience of being arrested in a foreign country and accused of causing the death of a fan.

Published in 2015, Dark Days isn’t really a conventional Lamb of God autobiography.

Yes, the band is here.

Yes, metal is everywhere.

Yes, Blythe discusses touring, addiction and his life as the vocalist of one of modern American metal’s biggest bands.

But the beating heart of this book is the extraordinary legal ordeal that began when Lamb of God arrived in the Czech Republic in 2012.

Blythe was arrested.

He was taken to prison.

And he eventually faced trial on a manslaughter charge connected to the death of a young concertgoer following a Lamb of God show in Prague two years earlier.

Blythe was ultimately acquitted.

But Dark Days isn’t written like some triumphant:

“I WON!”

victory lap.

It’s far more complicated than that.

And considerably more human.

This is one of the most thoughtful, frightening and powerful books we’ve reviewed here at The Riff Report.

Turn down the backstage nonsense for a moment, Riffers.

This one’s serious. 🤘🖤

🎤 RANDY BLYTHE BEFORE LAMB OF GOD

Before international tours, festival stages and Grammy nominations, there was David Randall Blythe.

And one of the strengths of Dark Days is that Blythe doesn’t present himself as someone destined from birth to become a metal frontman.

His path is considerably messier.

Punk.

Hardcore.

Skate culture.

Alcohol.

Underground music.

Bad decisions.

Lots of bad decisions.

Blythe’s worldview was shaped as much by punk-rock independence as by heavy metal.

That combination would eventually become crucial to Lamb of God’s identity.

Because although Lamb of God became one of the defining American metal bands of their generation, there’s always been something rougher underneath.

Something closer to hardcore.

Something that doesn’t feel designed in a boardroom.

🔥 BURN THE PRIEST

Before Lamb of God became Lamb of God, they were Burn the Priest.

Formed in Richmond, Virginia, the band emerged from an underground scene where commercial success wasn’t exactly guaranteed.

The musicians weren’t sitting around planning their future festival headline slots.

They were making heavy music because they needed to make heavy music.

Eventually Burn the Priest evolved into Lamb of God, and things began moving rapidly.

The riffs became sharper.

The songwriting developed.

The audience grew.

And Blythe’s enormous roar became one of the band’s defining weapons.

🤘 LAMB OF GOD RISES

By the 2000s, Lamb of God had become one of the leading bands in the new wave of American heavy metal.

Albums including:

New American Gospel

As the Palaces Burn

Ashes of the Wake

Sacrament

Wrath

helped establish the band internationally.

And bloody hell, those riffs.

“Black Label.”

“11th Hour.”

“Ruin.”

“Laid to Rest.”

“Now You’ve Got Something to Die For.”

“Redneck.”

“Walk with Me in Hell.”

This wasn’t lightweight stuff.

Lamb of God combined thrash, groove metal and hardcore intensity into something absolutely ferocious.

And live?

Chaos.

Beautiful, sweaty, circle-pit chaos.

🍺 THE OTHER BATTLE

But while Lamb of God’s career was climbing, Blythe was fighting another battle.

Alcohol.

And he doesn’t romanticise it.

That’s important.

Metal culture has historically been very good at treating excessive drinking as part of the uniform.

Band shirt.

Boots.

Beer.

Repeat.

But addiction isn’t funny when you’re trapped inside it.

Blythe writes candidly about the damage drinking caused to his life and relationships.

The fun disappears.

The party stops being a party.

And eventually you’re simply feeding something that controls you.

His eventual sobriety becomes one of the most important foundations underneath everything that happens later.

Because when the real nightmare arrives?

He has to face it sober.

🇨🇿 PRAGUE, 2012

This is where Dark Days changes completely.

Lamb of God travelled to the Czech Republic in June 2012 to perform in Prague.

Blythe stepped off the plane expecting another gig.

Instead, police were waiting.

He was arrested.

Imagine that.

You’ve travelled internationally thousands of times.

Airports.

Customs.

Hotels.

Venues.

Soundchecks.

Another day at work.

Then suddenly you’re being detained in a foreign country over an incident you don’t fully understand.

Blythe soon learned that the authorities were investigating the death of a young fan following a Lamb of God concert in Prague in 2010.

And he was being held responsible.

🖤 DANIEL NOSEK

The fan was Daniel Nosek.

He was 19 years old.

And this is where the book deserves enormous credit.

Blythe never allows Daniel to become merely:

“the person involved in my court case.”

He was a young man.

A music fan.

Someone’s son.

Someone’s friend.

He attended a concert and later died following injuries sustained around the event.

Whatever legal arguments surrounded Blythe’s responsibility, one fact remained unchanged:

A young person had lost his life.

Blythe never seems to forget that.

And neither should the reader.

🔒 PANKRÁC PRISON

Blythe was held in Pankrác Prison in Prague.

Suddenly the vocalist of an internationally successful metal band wasn’t backstage.

He wasn’t on a tour bus.

He wasn’t in a hotel.

He was a prisoner.

And Dark Days becomes extraordinarily vivid here.

The routines.

The uncertainty.

The language barrier.

The other prisoners.

The isolation.

The fear of not knowing how long he might remain there.

This isn’t rock-star tourism.

Blythe is genuinely confronted with the possibility that his life has changed permanently.

And because he’s sober, there’s no chemical escape hatch.

He has to sit there.

Think.

Wait.

And deal with it.

🧠 THE MENTAL BATTLE

This might be the strongest element of the entire memoir.

Blythe understands that panic won’t help him.

He needs discipline.

He needs routine.

He needs to control what he actually can control.

That’s a surprisingly powerful idea.

He can’t control the Czech legal system.

He can’t control when he’ll be released.

He can’t control what newspapers are saying.

He can’t control the future.

But he can control how he behaves inside the cell.

He can exercise.

He can read.

He can write.

He can observe.

He can maintain dignity.

Those choices become acts of resistance against despair.

📚 WRITING BECOMES SURVIVAL

Blythe is an intelligent writer.

That’s probably the biggest surprise for anyone expecting:

“Metal singer writes book. Lots of shouting.”

Nope.

The bloke can seriously write.

He observes people.

He thinks about language.

History.

Mortality.

Responsibility.

Addiction.

Fear.

The prison material is especially strong because he doesn’t need to manufacture drama.

He’s in a bloody prison facing potentially years behind bars.

The situation provides enough drama by itself.

So Blythe can focus on the human details.

And that’s what makes the book work.

🤝 THE PEOPLE INSIDE

Another strength is Blythe’s depiction of fellow prisoners.

It would be easy to reduce everyone around him to threatening prison stereotypes.

Instead, he observes individuals.

People with stories.

People with humour.

People capable of kindness.

People capable of violence.

People who made terrible decisions.

People awaiting judgement.

That complexity prevents Dark Days from becoming some macho prison-survival fantasy.

Blythe isn’t pretending he’s suddenly become the hardest bloke in Prague.

He’s adapting.

Learning.

Watching.

Surviving.

🌍 OUTSIDE, THE METAL WORLD RALLIES

News of Blythe’s arrest spread quickly through the metal community.

Fans and fellow musicians expressed support.

His bandmates were thrown into an extraordinary situation.

A touring metal band suddenly had to confront the possibility that its vocalist might be imprisoned for years.

The hashtag #FreeRandyBlythe spread widely.

But Blythe’s own attitude is more nuanced than the slogan.

He wanted freedom, obviously.

But he also understood that Czech authorities had a responsibility to investigate the death of one of their citizens.

That’s an important distinction.

He doesn’t simply write:

“How dare they arrest me?”

He recognises that Daniel Nosek’s death deserved answers.

⚖️ RELEASED… BUT NOT FINISHED

Eventually Blythe was released on bail and allowed to return to the United States.

Now, here’s where the story could have taken another turn.

He was back home.

He was outside Czech custody.

He could have attempted to avoid returning.

Instead, when the case went to trial…

he went back to Prague.

That decision tells you a lot about the man writing this book.

Blythe believed he was innocent.

He had said he would return.

So he returned.

Not because it was easy.

Not because there was no risk.

But because he’d given his word and wanted the case resolved.

Whatever you think about rock-star memoirs, that’s a hell of a moment.

⚖️ THE TRIAL

Blythe stood trial in Prague in 2013.

The court examined evidence surrounding the 2010 concert and Daniel’s death.

This section of the book is tense because we already understand what’s at stake.

Blythe wasn’t facing a fine.

His freedom was potentially on the line.

Years of his life.

His family.

His career.

Everything.

And he had voluntarily returned to face the process.

Ultimately, the Czech court acquitted Blythe, finding him not criminally liable for Daniel Nosek’s death.

The prosecution appealed.

The acquittal was subsequently upheld.

Legally, the case was finished.

Emotionally?

Not remotely.

💔 THERE’S NO WINNER HERE

This is perhaps the most important message in Dark Days.

Blythe was acquitted.

He went home.

He resumed his life.

But a 19-year-old man was still dead.

Daniel’s family still had to live with that loss.

So Blythe refuses to frame the ending as some victorious courtroom movie where the hero walks outside, punches the air and the credits roll.

There is relief.

Of course there is.

But celebration would feel grotesque.

That’s where the memoir displays real maturity.

Sometimes justice reaches a legal conclusion without creating a happy ending.

🤘 RESPONSIBILITY AT SHOWS

The case inevitably raises difficult questions about safety at concerts.

What responsibility does a performer have?

What responsibility does a venue have?

Security?

Promoters?

Audience members?

There aren’t always simple answers.

Metal shows can be physical.

Crowd-surfing happens.

Moshing happens.

Stage-diving has historically been part of punk and hardcore culture.

But nobody goes to a gig expecting to die.

That’s why safety matters.

And it’s why bands, venues, security and fans all play a part in creating an environment where chaos can happen without becoming tragedy.

Go hard in the pit.

Look after each other.

If someone falls?

Pick them up.

Always.

🍺 SOBRIETY CHANGES EVERYTHING

Imagine Blythe facing this ordeal during the height of his alcohol addiction.

He discusses that possibility.

Would he have coped?

Would he have been capable of the discipline required?

Would he have made the same decisions?

Sobriety didn’t make prison easy.

Nothing could.

But it gave him the clarity to face reality without hiding from it.

That makes Dark Days partly a book about recovery.

Not recovery as some inspirational poster.

Recovery as preparation for life when life becomes absolutely brutal.

📖 THIS IS NOT “THE LAMB OF GOD STORY”

This point matters if you’re buying the book.

If you’re expecting a complete album-by-album history of Lamb of God?

That’s not really what Dark Days is.

The band forms part of Blythe’s story.

Music is essential.

Touring is essential.

His career provides context.

But the central narrative is much more personal.

This is Randy Blythe’s memoir.

Not an authorised biography of Lamb of God.

And honestly?

That’s why it’s better.

There are plenty of places to learn recording dates and tour statistics.

Dark Days wants to tell you what happened inside one man’s head when the world suddenly turned upside down.

✍️ BLYTHE CAN BLOODY WRITE

We need to come back to this.

Because Dark Days isn’t merely interesting because its author experienced something extraordinary.

Plenty of famous people have extraordinary stories and produce painfully average books.

Blythe has an actual voice.

He’s thoughtful.

Opinionated.

Self-aware.

Funny when appropriate.

Serious when necessary.

And capable of stepping outside himself to consider other people involved.

He doesn’t always portray himself favourably.

That’s crucial.

Great memoirs require the author to admit:

“I was wrong.”

“I behaved badly.”

“I don’t know.”

Blythe is capable of doing that.

🖤 DANIEL’S FAMILY

Some of the most affecting material surrounds Blythe’s attitude towards Daniel Nosek’s family.

He doesn’t treat them as enemies.

Think about how easy that would have been.

When you’re accused of a serious crime, the natural defensive response might be to view everyone on the other side as hostile.

But Daniel’s family had lost their son.

Their grief existed independently of Blythe’s legal position.

Recognising that humanity gives the book enormous emotional depth.

There is no cheap villain.

There’s tragedy.

And people trying to understand it.

🔥 FROM THE STAGE TO THE CELL

The contrast is almost impossible to comprehend.

One minute:

Festival stages.

Thousands of fans.

Amplifiers.

Tour buses.

International travel.

The next:

A prison cell.

That’s what makes Dark Days so compelling.

Celebrity becomes completely meaningless.

Your album sales don’t matter.

Your festival billing doesn’t matter.

Your backstage rider doesn’t matter.

The prison door closes exactly the same way.

And suddenly the famous metal vocalist is simply another man waiting to learn what happens next.

📚 DOES DARK DAYS STILL HOLD UP?

Absolutely.

In fact, Dark Days stands apart from many music memoirs precisely because the central themes aren’t dependent on a particular era of metal.

Responsibility.

Addiction.

Sobriety.

Fear.

Mortality.

Justice.

Grief.

Personal integrity.

Those themes don’t expire.

You don’t even need to be a huge Lamb of God fan to find the book compelling.

Obviously, if you’re already blasting Ashes of the Wake while reading, even better.

But the memoir works beyond fandom.

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Dark Days is one of the strongest memoirs written by a modern metal musician.

Full stop.

It’s not five guitars because Randy Blythe fronts Lamb of God.

It’s not five guitars because we’re metalheads and someone mentioned a circle pit.

It’s five guitars because this is a genuinely powerful book.

Blythe takes an extraordinary experience and refuses to turn himself into a superhero.

He writes about fear.

He writes about mistakes.

He writes about addiction.

He writes about responsibility.

He writes about a dead young man whose family will never get him back.

And he writes about what it means to keep your word when keeping it could cost you your freedom.

That’s considerably heavier than any breakdown.

⭐ RIFF REPORT RATING: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 – 5/5

Dark, intelligent, frightening and deeply human.

If you’re looking for endless backstage debauchery, there are other books.

If you’re looking for a serious memoir from a metal musician who genuinely has something worth saying?

Read Dark Days.

You’ll come away understanding Randy Blythe differently.

You might understand touring differently.

You might even think differently about what responsibility means when thousands of people gather in one room to lose their minds to heavy music.

Because the pit should be chaos.

The riffs should be violent.

The crowd should leave sweaty, exhausted and grinning.

But everyone should go home.

That’s the bit that matters.

Look after each other, Riffers. 🤘🖤

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
