Ian Winwood (2018) โ€“ Book Review

Author: Ian Winwood
Published: 2018
Genre: Music History / Punk Rock / Alternative Rock
Riff Report Rating: ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธยฝ โ€“ 4.5/5

1994 was completely bloody ridiculous.

Green Day released Dookie.

The Offspring released Smash.

Punk rock โ€” supposedly dead, buried, commercially poisonous and destined to remain hidden in sweaty clubs โ€” suddenly found itself selling millions upon millions of records.

Kids whoโ€™d never been within 500 miles of Gilman Street were wearing Green Day shirts.

MTV was playing punk videos.

โ€œCome Out and Playโ€ was everywhere.

โ€œBasket Caseโ€ was everywhere.

And record executives who probably couldnโ€™t have named a Bad Religion song six months earlier were suddenly sniffing around the underground looking for THE NEXT BIG PUNK BANDโ„ข.

What could possibly go wrong?

Quite a lot, actually.

Ian Winwoodโ€™s Smash: Green Day, The Offspring, Bad Religion, NOFX and the โ€™90s Punk Explosion isnโ€™t simply a nostalgic trip back to baggy shorts, battered Vans and sticker-covered guitars.

Itโ€™s about what happens when an underground culture built partly around resistance to the mainstream suddenly becomes the mainstream.

Itโ€™s about independence.

Major labels.

Money.

Authenticity.

Friendship.

Ambition.

Success.

And that gloriously punk-rock insult:

SELL-OUT!

Grab the skateboard, turn the distortion up and find your oldest pair of Vans.

Weโ€™re going back to the โ€™90s, butt. ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿด PUNK WAS NEVER REALLY DEAD

Hereโ€™s the first important thing.

The โ€˜90s punk explosion wasnโ€™t punk suddenly returning from the grave.

Punk had never gone anywhere.

The mainstream might have stopped paying attention after the original explosion of the Sex Pistols, The Clash and Ramones, but underground punk scenes continued developing throughout the 1980s.

Hardcore happened.

Independent labels happened.

DIY touring networks grew.

Fanzines spread information.

Bands played tiny venues.

Records travelled through mail order.

Scenes formed around clubs, record shops and houses.

Punk survived because people kept doing it themselves.

So when Green Day and The Offspring suddenly became enormous in 1994, they hadnโ€™t magically appeared from nowhere.

There was an entire ecosystem underneath them.

And Smash is particularly good at showing us that ecosystem.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ CALIFORNIA DREAMINGโ€ฆ WITH DISTORTION

California sits at the centre of Winwoodโ€™s story.

But forget beaches, palm trees and Hollywood glamour.

This is a different California.

Small clubs.

Suburban boredom.

Skate culture.

Independent record labels.

Political punk.

Cheap vans.

DIY shows.

The emerging scene wasnโ€™t unified.

Different bands had different philosophies.

Different sounds.

Different ideas about success.

But they shared a network.

And eventually that network produced some of the most commercially successful punk bands in history.

๐ŸŽธ BAD RELIGION: THE BRAINS OF THE OPERATION

If youโ€™re going to discuss the foundations of the โ€™90s punk explosion, Bad Religion deserve serious respect.

Theyโ€™d been doing it long before the mainstream suddenly decided punk was fashionable again.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1980, Bad Religion combined fast melodic punk with intelligent, often politically and socially engaged lyrics.

And crucially, guitarist Brett Gurewitz helped establish Epitaph Records.

That label would become absolutely central to this story.

Bad Religion proved melodic punk could be smart, aggressive and ridiculously catchy.

Those vocal harmonies?

Unmistakable.

Those rapid-fire songs?

Influential as hell.

And through Epitaph, the bandโ€™s impact extended far beyond its own records.

๐Ÿ’ฟ EPITAPH RECORDS

Epitaph becomes one of the major characters in Smash.

Because independent labels were fundamental to punkโ€™s survival.

Before Spotify.

Before Bandcamp.

Before TikTok.

Before bands could upload a track from their bedroom and potentially reach half the planet by lunchtime.

Independent labels actually had to manufacture records.

Distribute them.

Promote them.

Build networks.

Get releases into shops.

It was difficult.

Expensive.

And frequently chaotic.

But it meant communities could exist outside the major-label system.

Then Epitaph released a record called Smash.

And everything went completely bonkers.

๐Ÿ’ฅ THE OFFSPRING โ€“ SMASH

The Offspring released Smash in 1994.

And the thing became enormous.

โ€œCome Out and Play.โ€

โ€œSelf Esteem.โ€

โ€œGotta Get Away.โ€

Suddenly an independent punk record was competing with the biggest releases in mainstream rock.

Smash went on to become one of the most successful independently released albums ever.

Think about how extraordinary that was.

No giant major-label machine was required to create the initial explosion.

The audience did it.

Word spread.

Radio reacted.

MTV reacted.

Sales grew.

And somewhere inside the major-label offices, dozens of executives presumably started yelling:

โ€œFIND ME ANOTHER ONE!โ€

๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿงจ SELF ESTEEM

โ€œSelf Esteemโ€ remains one of those songs where the opening arrives and an entire generation immediately knows whatโ€™s happening.

That riff.

That vocal.

That chorus.

Itโ€™s simultaneously miserable and enormous fun.

Which is basically a perfect description of being a teenager.

The Offspring possessed something the best melodic punk bands understand instinctively:

speed and aggression mean nothing if nobody remembers the song.

They wrote hooks.

Huge ones.

And once those hooks reached radio?

Game over.

๐Ÿ’š GREEN DAY

Meanwhile, further north in California, another band was causing its own trouble.

Green Day.

Billie Joe Armstrong.

Mike Dirnt.

Trรฉ Cool.

Before stadiums.

Before American Idiot.

Before eyeliner became a national emergency.

There was the East Bay punk scene.

And there was 924 Gilman Street.

Green Day grew within a community that valued DIY ethics and viewed the mainstream with considerable suspicion.

Then the band signed to Reprise Records.

Uh-oh.

You can hear the punk police warming up already.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ’ฐ THE GREAT SELL-OUT DEBATE

This is one of the most fascinating threads running throughout Smash.

What exactly constitutes selling out?

Is it signing to a major label?

Appearing on MTV?

Making money?

Playing arenas?

Allowing more than 200 people to enjoy your band?

Punk has always contained this contradiction.

You want people to hear your music.

Then people hear your music.

Then someone says:

โ€œI preferred you when nobody knew you.โ€

Excellent.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค˜

Green Dayโ€™s major-label signing caused serious tension with parts of their original scene.

For some, the decision represented betrayal.

For Green Day, it opened doors that would transform their lives.

Then they released Dookie.

And the argument became considerably louder.

๐Ÿ’ฉ DOOKIE

Released in February 1994, Dookie became absolutely massive.

โ€œLongview.โ€

โ€œBasket Case.โ€

โ€œWhen I Come Around.โ€

โ€œWelcome to Paradise.โ€

โ€œBurnout.โ€

โ€œHaving a Blast.โ€

Pop hooks.

Punk speed.

Teenage anxiety.

Boredom.

Masturbation.

Relationships.

Panic attacks.

Basically:

being young and completely confused, but with power chords.

Perfect.

Green Day didnโ€™t invent pop-punk.

But Dookie helped drag melodic punk into millions of bedrooms around the world.

And suddenly teenagers whoโ€™d never heard of Gilman Street were starting bands.

Thatโ€™s impact.

๐Ÿงบ BASKET CASE

Few songs capture Green Dayโ€™s brilliance better than โ€œBasket Case.โ€

Itโ€™s fast.

Funny.

Anxious.

Melodic.

And ridiculously catchy.

Billie Joe Armstrong took personal anxiety and transformed it into something an entire generation could scream together.

Thatโ€™s the trick.

Great punk doesnโ€™t necessarily need complicated musicianship.

It needs connection.

Three chords played with conviction can sometimes accomplish more than 400 notes played with perfect technique.

Sorry, shredders.

We still love you.

๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐ŸŸ๏ธ WOODSTOCK โ€™94

Then came the mud.

Woodstock โ€™94.

Green Day played a set that became legendary.

Mud started flying.

The band joined in.

Security became confused.

Mike Dirnt ended up being mistaken for a fan during the chaos and reportedly suffered injuries.

It was messy.

Ridiculous.

Completely unplanned.

And perfect television.

For anyone still wondering whether Green Day had crossed into the mainstream?

Yeah.

They had now.

Very loudly.

And covered in mud.

๐Ÿงท NOFX: โ€œNAH, WEโ€™RE GOODโ€

Then thereโ€™s NOFX.

And this is where Smash becomes particularly interesting.

Because while Green Day and The Offspring experienced enormous mainstream attention, NOFX represented a different path.

The band built a huge audience while largely rejecting the traditional major-label route.

Led by Fat Mike, NOFX became one of punkโ€™s great examples of how far an independent band could travel without following the expected industry blueprint.

They toured.

They sold loads of records.

They built a dedicated audience.

And they maintained a level of control many musicians could only dream about.

๐Ÿ• FAT WRECK CHORDS

Fat Mike also co-founded Fat Wreck Chords, another label that became enormously important to โ€™90s punk.

Between labels such as Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords, the scene developed genuine infrastructure.

Bands didnโ€™t necessarily need major labels.

Thatโ€™s crucial.

Because the existence of successful independent alternatives meant musicians could actually choose.

Want the giant machine?

Fine.

Want to stay independent?

Also possible.

Neither automatically makes you more punk.

The interesting part is what you do with the opportunity.

๐Ÿค˜ PUNK ROCK BECOMES BIG BUSINESS

Once Dookie and Smash exploded, the industry reacted exactly as industries always do.

It looked for more.

And more.

And more.

Punk and alternative music became commercially attractive.

Bands that previously wouldโ€™ve struggled to get a meeting suddenly found labels interested.

The underground had become a talent mine.

But when money arrives, culture changes.

Expectations change.

Relationships change.

Motivations get questioned.

Fans become suspicious.

Musicians start wondering whether their friends secretly think theyโ€™re sell-outs.

And journalists have an absolute field day.

Beautiful chaos.

๐Ÿ“บ MTV CHANGES THE GAME

Itโ€™s difficult for younger music fans to understand just how powerful MTV could be.

A heavily rotated video could transform a bandโ€™s career.

Suddenly image mattered enormously.

Punk had historically presented itself as resistant to polished mainstream culture.

Now punk bands were appearing on the worldโ€™s biggest music television network.

Contradiction?

Absolutely.

But punk has always thrived on contradictions.

Anti-fashion eventually becomes fashion.

Anti-commercial music sells millions.

Underground bands become celebrities.

Then a new underground forms specifically to reject them.

The circle of punk life.

๐Ÿ˜‚

๐ŸŽค THIS ISNโ€™T JUST FOUR BANDS

Despite the title highlighting Green Day, The Offspring, Bad Religion and NOFX, Smash works best when viewed as a book about the ecosystem surrounding them.

Labels.

Venues.

Promoters.

Scenes.

Fans.

Journalists.

Other bands.

Independent culture.

Major-label interest.

The punk explosion wasnโ€™t created by four groups operating in isolation.

There was an entire network underneath it.

Thatโ€™s why Winwoodโ€™s broader cultural approach works so well.

You understand not simply what happened, but why the conditions existed for it to happen.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง A BRITISH PERSPECTIVE

Ian Winwood brings the perspective of a British music journalist who witnessed the impact of American punk as it crossed the Atlantic.

And bloody hell, did it cross.

The influence of those Californian bands spread everywhere.

Including here in Britain.

Suddenly kids were discovering:

Green Day.

The Offspring.

NOFX.

Bad Religion.

Rancid.

Pennywise.

Lagwagon.

No Use for a Name.

And loads more.

One gateway band led to another.

You heard Green Day.

Then someone handed you a Bad Religion record.

Then you found NOFX.

Then suddenly youโ€™re standing in a record shop wondering why every album has a logo youโ€™ve never seen before.

Thatโ€™s how scenes grow.

๐Ÿง  MORE THAN NOSTALGIA

This is where Smash really succeeds.

It would have been incredibly easy to write:

โ€œRemember 1994? Wasnโ€™t it brilliant?โ€

Then spend 300 pages enthusiastically pointing at old Vans trainers.

Winwood goes deeper.

The book asks questions about authenticity.

Success.

Ownership.

Community.

Commercialisation.

Who gets to decide what punk means?

The band?

The audience?

The scene?

The record label?

Some bloke called Darren who saw Green Day in 1991 and therefore believes he owns them?

These questions remain relevant today.

๐Ÿ’ท CAN PUNK MAKE MONEY?

Hereโ€™s the question punk has spent decades arguing with itself about.

Can you become successful without betraying your principles?

Our answer?

Of course you bloody can.

Being poor isnโ€™t automatically virtuous.

Selling records isnโ€™t automatically corrupt.

Signing to an independent label doesnโ€™t automatically make someone ethical.

Signing to a major doesnโ€™t automatically turn someone into Satan wearing a Sony Music lanyard.

The interesting questions are:

What compromises did you make?

How did you treat people?

Did you retain creative control?

Did success change what you wanted to say?

Thatโ€™s considerably more complicated than shouting:

โ€œSELL-OUT!โ€

But nuance doesnโ€™t look as good written on the back of a leather jacket.

๐Ÿ”ฅ 1994: THE PERFECT STORM

Looking back, itโ€™s remarkable how much happened around the same period.

Alternative rock had already broken open the mainstream following Nirvana.

Grunge had altered what major labels believed could sell.

Then punk arrived with songs that were shorter, faster, funnier and often considerably easier to sing while jumping around your bedroom.

Green Day and The Offspring didnโ€™t create the opportunity alone.

They arrived at exactly the right cultural moment.

But timing only gets you through the door.

Songs keep you there.

And both bands had enormous songs.

๐ŸŽธ THE LEGACY

The commercial punk explosion of the 1990s changed rock music for years.

Without it, the later pop-punk boom looks very different.

Bands that dominated the late โ€™90s and 2000s emerged into a world where punk-influenced music had already proven commercially viable.

Warped Tour culture grew.

Independent punk labels became globally recognised.

Skate punk spread internationally.

Pop-punk became massive.

And eventually another generation discovered three chords, distortion and the thrilling realisation:

โ€œHang onโ€ฆ I could do this.โ€

Thatโ€™s punkโ€™s greatest trick.

It makes people want to participate.

๐Ÿ“š THE WRITING

Winwood writes with the enthusiasm of someone who genuinely understands why these bands mattered.

But heโ€™s also willing to examine the contradictions.

Thatโ€™s important.

Smash isnโ€™t simply four extended fan-club biographies stitched together.

Thereโ€™s context.

Industry history.

Scene politics.

Personalities.

Success.

Conflict.

And plenty of discussion about what happens when underground culture collides with enormous commercial opportunity.

It moves quickly and rarely disappears into academic waffle.

Exactly how a punk history should read.

Fast.

Sharp.

Occasionally argumentative.

โš ๏ธ ANY COMPLAINTS?

A couple.

Because the subject is so enormous, there will inevitably be bands and scenes readers wish received more attention.

Thatโ€™s the danger of writing about something called โ€œthe โ€™90s punk explosion.โ€

Someone somewhere will immediately shout:

โ€œBUT WHAT ABOUTโ€”โ€

Yes.

We know.

๐Ÿ˜‚

This isnโ€™t an encyclopaedia of every punk band active during the decade.

Itโ€™s a focused narrative built around several central players.

And viewed that way, it works brilliantly.

๐ŸŽธ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Smash is an absolute treat for anyone who grew up on โ€˜90s punk โ€” but itโ€™s much more than nostalgia.

Ian Winwood captures the moment when underground punk collided spectacularly with mainstream culture.

Green Day chose the major-label route and became superstars.

The Offspring proved an independent release could sell on an almost unimaginable scale.

Bad Religion helped build foundations upon which the explosion could happen.

NOFX demonstrated that another route was possible entirely.

Four bands.

Different decisions.

Different careers.

One enormous cultural moment.

And the beauty is that none of them provides the definitive answer to:

โ€œWhat is the correct way to be punk?โ€

Because there isnโ€™t one.

Thatโ€™s sort of the bloody point.

โญ RIFF REPORT RATING: ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽธยฝ โ€“ 4.5/5

Fast, insightful, nostalgic and packed with enough punk history to make you immediately start building a โ€™90s playlist.

If Dookie was one of your gateway recordsโ€ฆ

If Smash lived permanently in your CD playerโ€ฆ

If Bad Religion made you reach for the lyric sheetโ€ฆ

If NOFX taught you that punk bands could remain fiercely independentโ€ฆ

Read this book.

Then find those records.

Turn them up.

And enjoy the glorious irony that music supposedly built to reject the mainstream ended up invading it anyway.

Punk wasnโ€™t dead.

It was just waiting for 1994 to kick the bloody door in. ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿค˜

๐Ÿ’ฌ OVER TO YOU, RIFFERS!

What was your gateway into โ€™90s punk?

๐Ÿ’š Green Day โ€“ Dookie
๐Ÿ’ฅ The Offspring โ€“ Smash
๐Ÿง  Bad Religion
๐Ÿค˜ NOFX
๐Ÿงท Or another band entirely?

And the dangerous one:

Did signing to a major label make Green Day sell-outs โ€” or was the entire argument always a load of old cobblers?

Get stuck into the comments, butt. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ”ฅ

Michael

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
