From ‘Love Me Do’ to ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ — Sonicbond’s On Track series tackles the years when four lads from Liverpool changed absolutely everything

There are bands.

There are massive bands.

There are bands that define generations.

And then there are The Beatles.

Trying to write about John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 2026 presents one fairly enormous problem: what the bloody hell is left to say?

Bookshelves are already bending under the weight of Beatles literature. Biographies, memoirs, recording diaries, photographic collections, conspiracy theories, session breakdowns and enough examinations of Sgt. Pepper to wallpaper the Cavern Club several times over.

So when a book called The Beatles 1962–1966: Every Album, Every Song lands on the desk, the challenge is obvious.

Can another Beatles book actually bring something worthwhile to the party?

Well, grab yourself a brew, stick Revolver on and get comfortable, because this entry in Sonicbond Publishing’s On Track series takes a refreshingly straightforward approach.

Forget trying to retell the entire Beatles mythology.

This is about the music.

And what music it is.

🎸 FOUR YEARS THAT CHANGED POPULAR MUSIC

The period between 1962 and 1966 is absolutely bonkers when you stop and think about it.

Seriously.

Four years.

That’s roughly the amount of time some modern bands take deciding what font to use on their next album cover.

The Beatles went from the relatively straightforward pop charms of ‘Love Me Do’ to the psychedelic studio madness of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’.

That transformation alone tells you why this era deserves a book.

Early Beatles records contain songs designed to explode from transistor radios, dance halls and teenage bedrooms.

Then everything starts changing.

The songwriting becomes more sophisticated.

The arrangements become more adventurous.

George Harrison develops as a songwriter.

The studio becomes another instrument.

Indian influences creep into the music.

Tape loops arrive.

Lyrics become more introspective.

And suddenly the lovable mop-tops causing teenagers to scream themselves hoarse are making records that sound like they’ve discovered a portal into another dimension.

It is one of the most ridiculous creative growth spurts in music history.

And The Beatles 1962–1966: Every Album, Every Song gives that evolution room to breathe.

📖 THE ON TRACK APPROACH

If you’ve encountered Sonicbond’s On Track books before, you’ll know the basic idea.

Pick an artist.

Work through the catalogue.

Discuss the albums.

Then get properly stuck into the songs.

It’s an approach that works brilliantly for a band like The Beatles because their story can sometimes become bigger than their actual records.

We all know the mythology.

Beatlemania.

The screaming fans.

The matching suits.

The haircuts.

The films.

The controversy.

The endless interviews.

But beneath all that cultural noise sits an extraordinary collection of songs.

And this book puts those songs back under the microscope.

Rather than becoming overwhelmed by the gigantic Beatles story, the focus remains largely where it should:

on the records.

💿 PLEASE PLEASE ME — AND WE’RE OFF!

Going back to the earliest Beatles material after decades of increasingly heavy rock music can be quite revealing.

There are no enormous Marshall stacks.

No double-kick drums.

No seven-string guitars tuned somewhere around the centre of the Earth.

Yet the energy is unmistakable.

The early Beatles were essentially a rock ’n’ roll band that became a pop phenomenon.

And tracks like ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ still absolutely bounce.

You can practically smell the sweaty clubs.

There is youth in those recordings.

Urgency.

Confidence.

And occasionally a slightly rough edge that gets forgotten when people think only about the polished image of early Beatlemania.

The book’s song-by-song structure helps you appreciate how quickly Lennon and McCartney were learning their craft.

Ideas appear.

They develop.

Experiments begin.

And before long, things start getting very interesting indeed.

🔥 BEATLEMANIA GOES ABSOLUTELY MENTAL

Then comes the period when The Beatles basically conquer Earth.

With The Beatles.

A Hard Day’s Night.

Beatles for Sale.

Help!

The singles are ridiculous.

‘She Loves You’.

‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’.

‘Can’t Buy Me Love’.

‘A Hard Day’s Night’.

‘Ticket to Ride’.

‘Help!’

Most bands would happily sacrifice their drummer’s favourite cymbal to write ONE song that memorable.

The Beatles were chucking them out like Greggs sausage rolls at lunchtime.

And because the book moves through the catalogue methodically, you begin noticing something important.

The changes weren’t happening every few years.

They were happening constantly.

The band that recorded one album could sound noticeably different by the next.

That relentless creative momentum becomes one of the most fascinating elements of revisiting this period.

🎤 LENNON AND McCARTNEY — THE SONGWRITING MONSTER

Obviously, you cannot discuss these records without talking about John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Their partnership remains one of popular music’s great creative relationships.

Sometimes complementary.

Sometimes competitive.

Often both.

What becomes increasingly apparent as the songs roll past is how their different instincts helped propel the band forwards.

Melody.

Wordplay.

Emotion.

Experimentation.

Hooks.

Harmony.

Competition can destroy bands.

With The Beatles, it frequently seemed to make the songs better.

And while thousands of pages have been written attempting to dissect who contributed exactly what to each Beatles song, the On Track format allows the reader to concentrate primarily on what ultimately matters:

Does the song work?

Quite often, the answer is a massive:

YES, MUN.

🎸 DON’T FORGET GEORGE

One particularly enjoyable aspect of revisiting the Beatles catalogue chronologically is watching George Harrison develop.

When you’ve got Lennon and McCartney casually occupying the songwriting department, getting your own compositions onto Beatles albums wasn’t exactly an easy shift.

But George grows.

His confidence increases.

His musical interests expand.

And by the time we reach tracks such as ‘Taxman’, his importance is impossible to ignore.

His fascination with Indian music also becomes hugely significant.

That willingness to bring different sounds into The Beatles’ world helped widen the band’s musical vocabulary dramatically.

The Beatles were becoming less interested in what a pop group was supposed to sound like.

That attitude would change everything.

🥁 AND RINGO? ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL

Ringo Starr sometimes gets treated unfairly in lazy discussions about great drummers.

Listen properly.

The bloke knew exactly what the song needed.

That matters.

Being a great drummer isn’t about squeezing seventeen fills into every eight bars while simultaneously attempting to summon Thor.

Ringo’s playing serves the songs.

His personality also became an enormous part of The Beatles’ appeal.

The chemistry between these four musicians is ultimately what makes the records work.

Take one ingredient away and you’re not getting the same band.

Simple as that.

🌳 RUBBER SOUL — SOMETHING HAS CHANGED

And then we reach Rubber Soul.

This is where things really start getting spicy.

The Beatles are no longer simply producing brilliant pop records.

They’re expanding.

Songs become more reflective.

Instrumentation becomes broader.

The lyrical landscape changes.

Tracks like ‘Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)’, ‘In My Life’, ‘Drive My Car’ and ‘Nowhere Man’ show a band moving rapidly away from the formula that had made them globally famous.

And that’s important.

Success gives musicians a choice.

Repeat what worked.

Or risk everything trying something new.

The Beatles repeatedly chose the second option.

🌀 THEN REVOLVER TURNS UP AND BLOWS THE DOORS OFF

If Rubber Soul opens the door, Revolver kicks the bloody thing off its hinges.

What an album.

Even now, decades later, parts of it sound adventurous.

Imagine encountering it in 1966.

‘Taxman’.

‘Eleanor Rigby’.

‘I’m Only Sleeping’.

‘Here, There and Everywhere’.

‘Yellow Submarine’.

‘She Said She Said’.

‘For No One’.

‘Got to Get You into My Life’.

And then…

‘Tomorrow Never Knows’.

That last track is where you realise how far we’ve travelled.

Go back to ‘Love Me Do’.

Then play ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’.

Four years separate them.

FOUR.

That is absolutely ridiculous.

Tape loops, altered vocals, unconventional recording techniques and psychedelic atmosphere have completely transformed the sonic landscape.

This isn’t simply a band getting better.

It’s a band reconsidering what a recording studio can actually do.

And reading about the catalogue chronologically makes that transformation even more impressive.

📚 WHO IS THIS BOOK ACTUALLY FOR?

Here’s where Sonicbond’s format really earns its keep.

You don’t necessarily need to be the sort of Beatles obsessive who knows what everyone ate for breakfast during the recording of Beatles for Sale.

This is approachable enough for somebody beginning to explore the catalogue.

But there’s also plenty here for established fans who simply fancy revisiting the records with a guide alongside them.

In fact, that’s probably the best way to read it.

Album on.

Book open.

Tea nearby.

Maybe something stronger if you’re heading towards Revolver. 😂

Read about a song.

Play it.

Notice something you’d forgotten.

Move onto the next.

Suddenly you’ve spent an entire evening listening to Beatles records instead of doing whatever productive thing you originally intended.

Proper job.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

The biggest compliment we can give The Beatles 1962–1966: Every Album, Every Song is that it makes you want to listen.

That’s what a good music book should do.

It shouldn’t make the records feel like museum exhibits.

It should make you want to pull them off the shelf.

Turn the speakers up.

And hear them again.

The Beatles have been analysed so extensively that it’s sometimes easy to forget the simple reason we’re still talking about them.

The songs are bloody brilliant.

And between 1962 and 1966, those songs evolved at a rate that still seems almost impossible.

From Liverpool rock ’n’ rollers to international pop phenomenon.

From Beatlemania to experimentation.

From ‘Love Me Do’ to ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’.

All in four years.

Whether you’ve been collecting Beatles records since dinosaurs wandered into HMV or you’ve only recently decided to discover why everyone keeps banging on about these four lads from Liverpool, Sonicbond’s On Track treatment provides an entertaining excuse to travel through those extraordinary records again.

And frankly?

Any book that sends us back to Rubber Soul and Revolver with the volume knob heading clockwise is doing something right.

🎸🎸🎸🎸½ / 5 GUITARS

A fascinating trip through the first explosive half of The Beatles’ recording career — accessible, enthusiastic and best enjoyed with the albums playing loudly alongside it.

Now somebody stick ‘Taxman’ on.

We’ve got reading to do.

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
