Today marks one year since the world lost one of the most important, influential and unmistakable voices in rock and heavy metal history.

Ozzy Osbourne passed away at the age of 76, leaving behind a career that did far more than entertain millions of people. He helped reshape the entire sound, image and attitude of heavy music.

For more than five decades, Ozzy stood at the centre of rock’s loudest, strangest and most unforgettable moments. He was the voice of Black Sabbath, a solo superstar, a television personality, a festival founder and one of the most recognisable figures popular culture has ever produced.

But above everything else, he was Ozzy.

There was nobody else quite like him.

The Voice That Helped Create Heavy Metal

When Black Sabbath emerged from Birmingham at the end of the 1960s, the musical landscape changed forever.

The combination of Tony Iommi’s crushing guitar riffs, Geezer Butler’s dark lyrics, Bill Ward’s thunderous drumming and Ozzy’s haunting vocals created something that sounded dangerous, unsettling and completely new.

Their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath, arrived in 1970 and helped lay the foundations for what would become heavy metal.

Then came Paranoid, featuring songs including War Pigs, Iron Man and the title track. It remains one of the most important albums in the history of rock music.

The band followed it with Master of Reality, another landmark release packed with slower, heavier and darker sounds that would go on to influence doom metal, stoner rock, grunge and countless other genres.

Black Sabbath did not simply become successful.

They created a blueprint.

Their music gave a voice to outsiders, misfits and working-class fans who wanted something darker and heavier than the polished pop music surrounding them.

At the centre of it all was Ozzy’s unmistakable voice.

It was eerie, emotional, powerful and instantly recognisable.

You only needed to hear a few seconds to know exactly who was singing.

From Black Sabbath to Solo Superstar

After leaving Black Sabbath, many people believed Ozzy’s career might be over.

They could not have been more wrong.

In 1980, Ozzy released his debut solo album, Blizzard of Ozz, and launched one of the most successful solo careers in rock history.

The album featured the legendary Crazy Train, one of the most recognisable rock songs ever recorded, alongside classics such as Mr. Crowley and Suicide Solution.

His partnership with guitarist Randy Rhoads produced some of the most exciting and influential music of the era.

The follow-up album, Diary of a Madman, continued Ozzy’s incredible rise and further proved that he was more than capable of standing on his own.

Across the decades, Ozzy released a string of hugely successful albums, including:

Bark at the Moon

The Ultimate Sin

No Rest for the Wicked

No More Tears

Ozzmosis

Black Rain

Scream

Ordinary Man

Patient Number 9

Songs such as Mama, I’m Coming Home, No More Tears, Bark at the Moon and Shot in the Dark became staples of rock radio, festival stages and metal playlists around the world.

Ozzy never stood still.

He constantly worked with new musicians, embraced younger generations of artists and found ways to remain relevant without losing the personality that made him unique.

More Than 100 Million Records Sold

Across his career with Black Sabbath and as a solo artist, Ozzy sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

He earned numerous gold and platinum albums, won multiple Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Black Sabbath.

Those achievements alone would be enough to secure anyone’s place in music history.

But Ozzy’s true impact cannot be measured by record sales, trophies or chart positions.

His influence can be heard in generations of musicians.

Metallica, Slipknot, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Ghost and countless others have all existed within a world that Black Sabbath and Ozzy helped create.

Every crushing riff, dark lyric and theatrical metal performance carries at least a little of that original Sabbath spirit.

The Wild Man of Rock

Ozzy’s career was never short of chaos.

His life became surrounded by legendary stories, outrageous behaviour and moments that seemed almost impossible to believe.

There were wild tours, infamous incidents and enough rock and roll madness to fill several books.

Yet beneath the headlines was a man with an incredible sense of humour, a deep love for his family and a genuine connection with his fans.

That softer and funnier side of Ozzy became known to millions through The Osbournes.

The reality television series turned the Osbourne family into household names and introduced Ozzy to an entirely new audience.

Suddenly, the Prince of Darkness was not only known as the terrifying frontman of Black Sabbath.

He was also the confused, loveable dad wandering around the house, shouting for Sharon and trying to understand how the television remote worked.

The programme made Ozzy even more famous, but it also made him feel human.

Fans saw the warmth, vulnerability and humour behind the rock icon.

Ozzfest Changed the Festival World

Ozzy’s influence also extended beyond his own music.

Launched in the 1990s, Ozzfest became one of the most important heavy metal festivals in the world.

The festival gave established bands a massive platform while also helping introduce younger acts to huge audiences.

Slipknot, System of a Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Lamb of God and many others appeared on Ozzfest bills during crucial moments in their careers.

For metal fans, Ozzfest was more than another touring festival.

It became a community.

It created opportunities, launched careers and proved that heavy music could fill huge venues year after year.

Once again, Ozzy helped move the entire genre forward.

A Fighter Until the End

During the final years of his life, Ozzy faced major health challenges.

He underwent surgery, dealt with serious injuries and openly discussed his battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Despite everything, his desire to return to the stage never disappeared.

Ozzy repeatedly spoke about wanting to perform again and say a proper goodbye to the fans who had supported him throughout his career.

That determination summed him up perfectly.

He was a survivor.

For decades, people joked that Ozzy was indestructible.

He had lived through excess, illness, addiction, accidents and enough chaos to flatten most ordinary mortals.

Yet he kept coming back.

He kept recording.

He kept laughing.

He kept reminding everyone why they had fallen in love with him in the first place.

One Year On, the Music Still Roars

A year after his passing, Ozzy’s absence is still deeply felt.

The rock and metal world lost more than a singer.

It lost one of its founding fathers.

Festivals, bands, fans and musicians across the globe continue to celebrate his life and music.

Black Sabbath records still shake walls.

Crazy Train still sends crowds into meltdown.

War Pigs still sounds powerful, angry and frighteningly relevant.

Paranoid still gets people moving within seconds.

That is the mark of a true icon.

The music does not fade.

It becomes part of the culture.

The Prince of Darkness Lives On

Ozzy Osbourne helped create heavy metal, carried it around the world and remained one of its greatest ambassadors until the very end.

He inspired outsiders to be themselves.

He proved that strange could be brilliant.

He showed that darkness, humour, vulnerability and chaos could all exist within the same person.

His legacy can be heard every time a young guitarist plays their first heavy riff.

It can be felt whenever thousands of metal fans gather together in a field.

It lives in every Black Sabbath album, every solo record and every crowd roaring the words to Crazy Train.

One year may have passed, but the Prince of Darkness is far from forgotten.

So today, turn the speakers up.

Play Sabbath loud.

Raise a glass.

Throw the horns.

And remember the man who helped change heavy music forever.

Thank you for everything, Ozzy.

Rest in peace, Prince of Darkness.

1948–2025. 🖤🤘

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
