Right then rock fans… gather round because a serious piece of music history has just detonated the auction world.
The legendary Black Strat — the guitar used by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd to create some of the most iconic sounds in rock history — has just sold for a staggering $14.55 million (£11.4 million).
Yep. You read that right.
That officially makes it the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction once again. Absolute madness, mun. 🤯
And honestly? If any guitar deserves that crown… it’s this one.
🎶 The Guitar Behind Some of Rock’s Greatest Moments
The 1969 Fender Stratocaster, better known simply as The Black Strat, isn’t just any guitar with a famous owner.
This is the instrument that helped shape the sound of:
🎵 Comfortably Numb
🎵 Money
🎵 Shine On You Crazy Diamond
🎵 Time
🎵 Wish You Were Here
Basically… half the soundtrack of rock history.
Gilmour first bought the guitar in 1970, and over the decades it became his main studio and live instrument, appearing on Pink Floyd’s biggest albums including:
🔥 The Dark Side of the Moon
🔥 Wish You Were Here
🔥 Animals
🔥 The Wall
That smooth, emotional, spine-tingling lead tone that makes Floyd fans stare into the distance like they’ve just seen the universe?
Yeah… that came from this guitar.
💸 From Charity Auction To Rock Royalty Status
This isn’t the first time the Black Strat has made headlines either.
Back in 2019, David Gilmour sold the guitar as part of a charity auction to raise money for environmental organisation ClientEarth.
At the time it sold for around $4 million, which already made it the most expensive guitar ever sold.
Fast forward to 2026, and after appearing in the Jim Irsay Collection auction, the price has exploded to $14.55 million.
That’s not a price increase…
That’s a stadium-sized guitar solo of an investment. 🎸💰
🎸 Other Legendary Guitars In The Sale
The auction itself turned into a full-blown rock history feeding frenzy, with several iconic instruments changing hands.
Some of the other jaw-dropping sales included:
🎸 Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger” guitar – $11.56 million
🎸 Kurt Cobain’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Mustang – $6.91 million
Previously the most expensive guitar record belonged to Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged Martin D-18E, which sold for $6 million in 2020.
Safe to say the Black Strat absolutely obliterated that record.
🌌 Why The Black Strat Matters
The thing about guitars like this is they’re not just instruments.
They’re time machines.
This guitar helped create some of the most emotional and atmospheric music ever recorded. The solos, the studio magic, the stadium moments — they all passed through those pickups.
Somewhere along the line, the Black Strat stopped being just a guitar.
It became a symbol of Pink Floyd’s entire sonic universe.
🤘 Final Riff
If guitars could talk, the Black Strat would have stories about:
• Studio sessions that changed music forever
• Stadium crowds singing every note
• Guitar solos that gave millions of people goosebumps
Now it also carries a brand new title:
The most expensive guitar in the world.
And honestly?
For a guitar responsible for some of the greatest sounds ever recorded…
That feels proper deserved, butt. 🤘🎸🔥
