Writing a hit song used to mean catchy hooks, big choruses, and maybe a dodgy haircut. These days? It also means checking your melodies haven’t accidentally wandered too close to someone else’s groove from 1978.
Copyright battles have become one of the most expensive hazards in modern music, with artists finding themselves dragged from sold-out arenas into soulless courtrooms. Sometimes they lose millions. Sometimes they lose songwriting credits. Sometimes they lose entire songs.
Grab a cuppa, hide your chord progressions, and let’s dive into the lawsuits that made the industry collectively mutter, “for f***’s sake…” 👇
1️⃣ Robin Thicke – Blurred Lines, Very Clear Consequences
The Blurred Lines case didn’t just make headlines, it rewired music copyright forever.
Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and co were ordered to pay over $5 million after a jury decided the song copied the feel of Marvin Gaye’s Got To Give It Up. Not the melody. Not the lyrics. The vibe.
From that moment on, every songwriter on Earth started panicking about whether a bassline could land them in court. Studio sessions have never been the same since.
2️⃣ Ed Sheeran – The Ginger Hitmaker vs The Legal System
Ed Sheeran might look harmless, but his songs have attracted lawsuits like festival flies.
From Thinking Out Loud to Shape of You, Sheeran has faced multiple high-profile copyright claims involving multi-million-dollar sums. While Ed has successfully defended himself in some major cases, the cost of doing so has been astronomical.
Winning doesn’t mean it’s cheap, mun. It just means you keep your guitar at the end.
3️⃣ Sam Smith – A Chorus Too Close for Comfort
Sam Smith’s breakout hit Stay With Me ran into trouble when listeners noticed similarities with Tom Petty’s I Won’t Back Down.
Rather than letting it descend into a courtroom circus, Smith handed over songwriting credit and a chunk of royalties to Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.
Polite. Respectful. Still painfully expensive 💸
4️⃣ The Verve – Britain’s Most Heartbreaking Royalty Robbery
Few stories sting quite like this one.
Bitter Sweet Symphony, one of the most iconic British songs ever written, ended with 100% of its royalties going to The Rolling Stones due to an unauthorised orchestral sample.
Richard Ashcroft spent years earning nothing from the song that defined a generation. A national anthem turned legal nightmare. Only in music, mun.
5️⃣ Katy Perry – Dark Horse Goes to Court
Katy Perry’s chart-smashing Dark Horse landed her in hot water when a jury ruled it copied elements of a Christian rap track.
The initial verdict ordered Perry and her collaborators to pay $2.8 million in damages. While parts of the ruling were later overturned, the legal fees alone were enough to make anyone question writing another pop banger.
Even cosmic hits come with legal black holes 🌌⚖️
6️⃣ Shakira – Loca Problems
Shakira’s dancefloor filler Loca was ruled to have been copied from an earlier song, resulting in the track losing its copyright protection entirely.
No copyright means no protection. No protection means serious financial damage. A global hit suddenly turned into a legal ghost.
7️⃣ Vanilla Ice – The Bassline That Launched a Thousand Lawsuits
This one’s legendary.
Vanilla Ice initially claimed Ice Ice Baby didn’t copy Queen and David Bowie’s Under Pressure because it had “one extra note”.
The courts were not buying it.
He ended up paying and handing over rights, making this one of the earliest and most famous sampling lawsuits in music history. A cautionary tale, served ice cold 🧊
8️⃣ Pharrell Williams – Guilty by Groove
As a co-writer on Blurred Lines, Pharrell Williams was held jointly responsible for the massive payout.
The case marked a turning point in how copyright law treats style and feel, sending shockwaves through producers and songwriters everywhere.
Suddenly, inspiration became a legal risk.
9️⃣ Led Zeppelin – Winning Still Costs Millions
Led Zeppelin eventually won the long-running lawsuit accusing Stairway to Heaven of copying Spirit’s Taurus.
But the victory came after years of legal battles and millions spent on defence, proving that even rock gods bleed money in copyright court.
Sometimes winning just means losing slightly less.
🎶⚖️ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
These lawsuits didn’t just empty bank accounts, they reshaped how music is written, credited, and judged.
In today’s industry, one familiar chord progression or “inspired” groove can mean legal letters instead of love letters. Writing a hit has never been riskier.
So credit generously, write boldly, and maybe hum your ideas quietly… just in case 👀🎸
