It looms in the distance like a mythical beast. It’s seen more glitter than the entire cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race and has repelled more hopeful invaders than a nightclub bouncer at 3AM. We’re talking, of course, about The Great Wall of Glastonbury – the mighty, magnificent steel barricade that protects Worthy Farm like some post-apocalyptic fortress of fun.

But what is it? Why does it exist? Who builds it? And could you scale it like a festival ninja in the dead of night?

(Short answer: no. Long answer: absolutely hell no.)

Welcome to your ultimate guide to the most hardcore fence in festival history.

📏 HOW BIG IS IT, REALLY?

Let’s kick things off with the basics. The Great Wall of Glastonbury isn’t just some bit of garden fencing from B&Q. Oh no, mun. This beast clocks in at a whopping 8.5 miles (13.6 km) of reinforced steel, wrapping around the entire perimeter of the Glastonbury Festival site at Worthy Farm.

To put that in perspective:

  • That’s longer than the Las Vegas Strip.
  • You could walk the entire wall in around 2.5 to 3 hours – if you weren’t being eyeballed by security the whole time.
  • It’s made up of around 3,000 separate panels, each 4 metres tall and 4 metres wide.
  • We’re talking taller than a double-decker bus in some sections.
  • With over 50,000 bolts, it takes an army to screw it all together.

It’s a beast. And yes, it’s completely real. This ain’t festival folklore.

🏗️ HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD?

Building the Great Wall of Glastonbury is a precision military operation dressed in high-vis and wellies.

🗓️ Construction begins around mid-May each year. That’s over six weeks before the first punter even hears the words “tent peg.” Teams of site crew – the legendary Glastonbury fence-builders – start rolling in with flatbed trucks, diggers, cranes, and enough steel to fortify a medieval castle.

By the time you’re queuing at the gates in June, this baby is fully bolted, locked, reinforced, and ready to repel every crafty chancer, fence-scaler, and drunk bloke with a trampoline who thinks he’s Bear Grylls.

After the festival? It takes 3-4 weeks to tear it all back down again. All those bolts, all that scaffolding – packed up like it was never there.

Total effort: 10 weeks of hardcore labour for 5 days of absolute carnage. Proper job. 👷‍♂️💪

🛡️ WHY DOES GLASTO NEED A WALL?

Let’s rewind to the Wild West era of Glasto history: the ‘90s and early 2000s.

Back then, Glastonbury had a… shall we say, relaxed attitude to security. It was a different time. People would climb fences, cut through hedges, bribe security, or just leg it in through gaps in the hedge. One bloke even tried to paraglide in wearing fairy wings (allegedly).

In 2000, it all came to a head. Organisers estimated that over 100,000 people got in without a ticket. That doubled the official crowd.

The result?

  • Campsites were dangerously overcrowded
  • Toilets overflowed (as if they weren’t already a horror show)
  • Emergency services struggled
  • There were injuries, lawsuits, and insurance panic

Michael Eavis said enough was enough. Glasto was almost cancelled. So in 2002, the Super Fence was born – part wall, part prison barricade, part legendary lore.

Since then? It’s become a symbol of order amid chaos, the thing that allows Glasto to run safely and sustainably, with every wristband accounted for and every square metre of grass protected.

💸 HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Building The Great Wall of Glastonbury doesn’t come cheap. You’re looking at:

  • £1 million per year, give or take
  • That includes materials, labour, transport, security, and surveillance
  • Reusable components are stored between festivals
  • Security costs (including CCTV, drones, guards, and tech) are layered on top

But in context of a festival that now grosses over £50 million per year, it’s a worthwhile investment. Better to spend £1 million keeping things safe and legal than lose the licence and send 200,000 people crying into their pints.

🎨 DESIGN FEATURES – NOT YOUR AVERAGE GARDEN WALL

So what makes this fence so hardcore? Let’s break down the ingredients:

1. Height

At 4 metres tall, it’s enough to stop most determined climbers. Think “tall enough to need a serious ladder” levels of tall.

2. Overhang

There’s a metal overhang at the top, curving outwards. You’d need to be Spider-Man to grip that thing.

3. Anti-Climb Paint & Grease

Yep – the top is sometimes coated in a nasty black grease that’ll ruin your clothes, your dignity, and your chances of getting back on Tinder.

4. Buried Footing

They dig down and bury the base to stop tunnelling. Not even the Great Escape lads could get under this thing.

5. No Handholds

The panels are solid steel with no horizontal bars, meaning nowhere to grip or rest your feet.

6. Blackout Sheeting

Some sections are wrapped in black fabric, preventing people from seeing through or distracting the crowd with daft behaviour (we’re looking at you, naked trumpet guy).

📸 SURVEILLANCE: BIG BROTHER IS MOSHING

Security doesn’t stop with the wall itself. This thing is a full-blown high-tech fortress. We’re talking:

  • CCTV everywhere
  • Thermal imaging cameras
  • 24/7 patrolling guards
  • Drones scanning the skyline
  • Sensors detecting tampering or movement

Basically, if you even look like you’re eyeing up the fence with naughty intentions, someone in a hi-vis vest will appear out of thin air like Batman and tell you to jog on.

🎭 THE LEGENDS, THE MYTHS, THE ABSOLUTE MADNESS

Like all good walls, this one has become the stuff of legend.

🧗‍♂️ Fence-Jumper Lore

Every year, a few brave (read: foolish) souls try to beat the wall. One was caught in 2016 using a homemade ladder made from tent poles. Another apparently tried to tightrope-walk along the top in 2018. Security caught them both. Nobody has successfully made it over since 2002 and lived to post it on Instagram.

🧟‍♀️ The Fence Zombies

There’s a famous Glasto tale of a lad who got caught in the mud near the wall trying to sneak in, only to be rescued by cows. Only in Glastonbury, mun.

🖌️ Banksy vs The Fence

Rumours swirl that Banksy used the fence as inspiration for some of his street art. He might have even sprayed something on it back in the day. You didn’t hear it from us.

🧠 FASCINATING FACTS TO IMPRESS YOUR MATES

  • The Super Fence has its own dedicated build team – many of whom return year after year.
  • If you laid it end to end, it would reach from Glastonbury to Bristol.
  • The build schedule is planned over 9 months in advance.
  • During teardown, the crew has found everything from fake passports to cursed underpants.
  • The fence features in multiple documentaries – it’s that iconic.
  • Glasto superfans track the fence construction on fan forums, using satellite maps and rumoured crew sightings. Honestly, it’s like Fence Watch 2025.

🤔 IS IT OVERKILL?

Some critics have argued the wall feels “prison-like” or “against the spirit of the original Glastonbury.” And sure, when you compare it to the free festivals of the ’70s, it’s a massive change.

But consider this:

  • The modern Glasto hosts over 210,000 people, including crew and volunteers
  • There are 1,000+ performances, multiple stages, and countless safety protocols
  • Without the wall, crowd control would be a nightmare
  • Insurance premiums would skyrocket
  • Charities wouldn’t get their cut
  • It would literally become a danger zone

So yeah – the wall is necessary. Not because Glasto’s sold out, but because it’s grown up. It’s not 1971 anymore. It’s the biggest greenfield music festival in the world, and that takes structure.

The wall allows the anarchy to exist inside the lines. Everything from naked parades to random wedding ceremonies in the Green Fields can happen in peace, because the wall has got your back.

🎤 LIFE INSIDE THE WALL

Once you’re past the gates, the fence becomes background noise. You’re too busy:

  • Getting your glitter on at Block9 💃
  • Eating the best falafel of your life at 3am 🧆
  • Crying during Elton John or laughing during IDLES 😢😂
  • Losing your mates, finding new ones, and maybe proposing to a stranger near the Stone Circle 💍✨

You barely even remember there is a wall – until you try and leave on Monday and see it again, like a steel hangover.

🌅 THE WALL AT NIGHT

At night, it’s almost eerie. Floodlights cast weird shadows. Security torches flicker like ghostly lanterns. You might hear it creak in the wind or thrum with distant bass.

For some, it’s comforting – the feeling that this madness is safe. For others, it’s a reminder that the real world is just outside, waiting. Either way, it’s part of the experience.

🔮 THE FUTURE OF THE GREAT WALL

As tech evolves, so too does the fence. Future versions could include:

  • Biometric scanners
  • Smart panels that detect tampering
  • Drone patrols with thermal imaging
  • Environmental sensors for weather alerts
  • AI-based perimeter management systems

But let’s not forget: this is still Glastonbury. So we might also get:

  • A DJ booth on the fence
  • Solar-powered art installations bolted to it
  • Projection mapping shows about the history of protest and free festivals
  • A Banksy robot that waves at you when you try to sneak in

Honestly, nothing would surprise us.

🎪 FINAL THOUGHTS: THE WALL THAT ROCKS

The Great Wall of Glastonbury isn’t just a fence. It’s a story. A legacy. A steel line in the mud that separates normal life from magic.

It’s the reason the festival runs so smoothly, so safely, and so brilliantly year after year.

So next time you’re there, swaying to a sunrise set or passing out in the Healing Fields, raise a cider to the lads in hard hats and the absolute unit of a wall they built. Because without it, Glastonbury as we know it wouldn’t exist.

Long live the chaos. Long live the music. And long live The Great Wall of Glastonbury. 🧱🎶🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
