Ah, the age-old festival photographerโ€™s dilemma: what lens do I take? Youโ€™ve blagged yourself a photo pass (nice one, mun ๐Ÿด) or maybe youโ€™re just braving it from the crowd with a camera stuffed in your rucksack next to the warm cans of Strongbow. Either way, you want your shots to look like Kerrang! cover material, not blurry potato phone snaps.

So, letโ€™s riff through the lens options and sort the headliners from the support acts.

๐ŸŽค In the Photo Pit โ€“ Up Close & Sweaty

If youโ€™re lucky enough to score a pit pass, you usually get 3 songs, no flash โ€“ and thatโ€™s it. No second chances when the pyro goes off and the frontman decides to pull the โ€œmetal scream face of the year.โ€

Hereโ€™s the kit you want:

24โ€“70mm f/2.8 โ€“ The Workhorse

  • Why? Covers everything from wide crowd shots to zooming in on the singer spitting lyrics.
  • Best for: Full-band captures, guitar poses, confetti blasts.
  • Downside: Everyone else has one too โ€“ youโ€™ll look like part of a lens cult.

70โ€“200mm f/2.8 โ€“ The Pit Sniper

  • Why? Ideal for drummers buried behind 50 cymbals, pyro cannons, or tight portraits.
  • Best for: Isolating solos, catching emotion, and looking like a pro sniper.
  • Downside: Heavy as a crate of Brains SA โ€“ your shoulders will be crying.

Primes (35mm, 50mm f/1.4 / f/1.8) โ€“ The Rock Mag Look

  • Why? Fast aperture saves you in dodgy lighting. Makes the world go all creamy bokeh while the singer looks like a god.
  • Best for: Intimate vibes, arty shots, making even a pub gig look epic.
  • Downside: No zoom. Youโ€™ll run around the pit like a caffeinated squirrel.

๐Ÿบ From the Crowd โ€“ No Pass, No Problem

Not got a pit pass? No worries. Some of the best fan photos come from the chaos of the crowd. Youโ€™re dodging tall blokes, inflatable flamingos, and the occasional pint shower โ€“ but thatโ€™s all part of the festival fun, mun.

Hereโ€™s the gear that works when youโ€™re shoulder-to-shoulder with sweaty strangers:

70โ€“300mm (or 100โ€“400mm if youโ€™re bold) โ€“ The Reach Machine

  • Why? Lets you shoot the stage even from the back barrier.
  • Best for: Big outdoor stages at festivals like Download or Glasto.
  • Downside: Aperture is slower (f/4โ€“5.6), so night sets get tricky.

24โ€“105mm f/4 โ€“ The All-Rounder

  • Why? Versatile and compact. Wide enough for selfies with the stage, long enough to still grab the band.
  • Best for: Casual shooters who donโ€™t wanna lug a bazooka lens.
  • Downside: f/4 isnโ€™t great when the stage lighting is dim.

Compact Primes (35mm / 85mm f/1.8) โ€“ The Stealth Option

  • Why? Small, light, and brilliant in low light.
  • Best for: Mid-crowd shots, portraits of mates, and sneaky band captures.
  • Downside: Youโ€™ll either nail the perfect shot or curse that you canโ€™t zoom.

๐ŸŽถ Festival-Proof Lens Wisdom

  • Weather Sealing = Life Saver ๐ŸŒง๏ธ โ€“ because rain, cider showers, and mud are part of the deal.
  • Fast Aperture = Best Mate โšก โ€“ f/2.8 or wider keeps you alive in purple LED hell.
  • Donโ€™t Go Ultra-Wide Unless Youโ€™re On Stage โ€“ 14mm just gives you a million heads and one lad on shoulders picking his nose.
  • Watch the Rules ๐Ÿšซ โ€“ Some festivals ban โ€œpro-looking gearโ€ in the crowd. A sneaky mirrorless with a prime draws less attention than a 70โ€“200 bazooka.

Whether youโ€™re wedged in the pit for three sweaty songs or losing your shoes in the mosh, the right lens means youโ€™ll walk away with photos that scream YESS MUN! ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿฅ Festival Photographerโ€™s Survival Kit Checklist

Because lenses are only half the battle. If youโ€™re heading into the photo pit or the depths of the crowd, make sure youโ€™ve got these essentials:

  • ๐ŸŽ’ A comfy, waterproof bag โ€“ your gear deserves better than a Tesco carrier bag.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Spare batteries โ€“ nothing worse than your camera dying just as the pyro goes BOOM.
  • ๐Ÿ’พ Memory cards galore โ€“ festivals eat memory faster than you eat chips at 2am.
  • ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Rain covers โ€“ even a shower cap nicked from a hotel will do in a pinch.
  • ๐Ÿงป Wet wipes โ€“ because mud, beer, and suspicious sticky stuff happen.
  • ๐Ÿฅค Water bottle โ€“ dehydration makes your shots shaky.
  • ๐ŸŽง Earplugs โ€“ protect your ears so you can still hear riffs in your 60s.
  • ๐Ÿงข Hat & sunscreen โ€“ because sunstroke in the pit is not a vibe.
  • ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Decent shoes โ€“ Converse look cool but wonโ€™t save you from 12 hours on your feet.
  • ๐Ÿ” Snacks โ€“ because ยฃ12 for a soggy burger is daylight robbery.

๐Ÿ“ธ Final Riff

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pit shooters: Dream combo = 24โ€“70mm f/2.8 + 70โ€“200mm f/2.8.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Crowd warriors: Go with 70โ€“300mm or a trusty 85mm prime.

Whether youโ€™re wedged in the pit for three sweaty songs or losing your shoes in the mosh, the right lens (and the right kit) means youโ€™ll walk away with photos that scream YESS MUN! ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ
