Broadway has officially gone full goth vampire chaos, butt.
The legendary cult classic The Lost Boys has exploded onto the theatre scene with a massive 12 Tony AwardⓇ nominations, including the big one — Best Musical — making it the most Tony-nominated musical of 2026. And honestly? We did not have “Broadway vampires causing absolute carnage” on our bingo card this year… but we are VERY here for it. 😈🩸
Critics across America are already losing their minds over it, with People calling it a:
“Thrilling, blockbuster event”
while the New York Post described it as:
“A breathtaking adventure unlike any musical seen before”
And somehow the hype train keeps getting louder than a Motorhead encore at full volume.
🌴 Welcome To Santa Carla… Population: Vampires
If you somehow missed the original 1987 film, first of all… WHAT’S OCCURRING MUN?! Secondly, here’s the setup.
When Lucy — played in the musical by three-time Tony nominee Shoshana Bean — moves to the mysterious California coastal town of Santa Carla with her teenage sons Michael and Sam, things quickly go sideways faster than a shopping trolley in a Download Festival campsite.
At first it seems like your standard fresh-start family move:
☀️ Sunny beaches
🎡 Boardwalk vibes
🎸 Local rock scene
🕶️ Leather jackets everywhere
But then Michael starts hanging around with a dangerous local gang led by a charismatic rocker-type stranger, while younger brother Sam discovers the horrifying truth:
The town is crawling with vampires. 🦇
Classic family holiday disaster really.
🎸 THIS ISN’T YOUR NAN’S MUSICAL
Forget polite theatre clapping and tiny sandwiches during intermission.
This production sounds absolutely massive.
Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Michael Arden (Parade, Maybe Happy Ending), the show transforms the beloved vampire movie into a huge theatrical spectacle packed with music, horror, emotion and enough atmosphere to power an entire goth nightclub.
The production features:
- 🎵 Music & lyrics by The Rescues
- 📖 Book by David Hornsby and Chris Hoch
- 💃 Choreography by Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant
- 🎹 Music supervision by Tony nominee Ethan Popp
And judging by the reactions coming out of Broadway… they’ve absolutely nailed it.
The New York Times even called it:
“The finest spectacle this season”
Which is basically theatre-speak for:
“This thing absolutely slaps.” 🔥
🩸 WHY ROCK FANS ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS
Honestly, this feels less like a traditional musical and more like someone shoved:
- 🎸 a glam metal concert
- 🦇 an 80s horror movie
- 🎭 a Broadway spectacle
- 🍺 and pure chaotic goth energy
…into a blender fuelled entirely by Monster Energy and eyeliner.
The original Lost Boys movie has always had massive rock ’n’ roll DNA running through it. From the iconic soundtrack to the biker-gang vampire aesthetic, it practically begged for a loud theatrical adaptation.
And now it’s finally happened.
You can already imagine the atmosphere:
⚡ Fog everywhere
⚡ Huge lighting rigs
⚡ Vampire harmonies
⚡ Leather trench coats flying about
⚡ Theatre kids transforming into full-blown metal goblins
Absolute scenes, mun.
🏆 THE BIGGEST MUSICAL OF 2026?
With 12 Tony nominations under its belt, The Lost Boys has gone from “that sounds mental” to one of the biggest theatre events in the world.
And honestly?
Fair play to them.
In a world full of safe, predictable adaptations, somebody decided to turn an iconic vampire cult movie into a giant theatrical rock horror spectacular… and Broadway has completely fallen for it.
Somewhere right now, an entire generation of goths are dusting off their leather jackets and preparing to invade New York.
🦇 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
A vampire musical based on The Lost Boys should not work this well.
But somehow it sounds like an absolute monster.
It’s dark.
It’s dramatic.
It’s theatrical chaos.
It’s basically what would happen if an 80s rock video bit a West End stage production in the neck.
And honestly?
We’re obsessed already. 🔥🦇🎸
If this thing heads to the UK, expect every alternative kid, horror nerd and aging rocker in a denim battle jacket to be queueing around the block faster than you can say:
