A new BBC investigation has brought a series of deeply serious allegations against actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto into the spotlight.
The documentary, titled Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret, features accounts from ten women concerning alleged behaviour spanning more than a decade.
Four of those women accuse Leto of conduct that could constitute criminal sexual offences, with the alleged incidents said to have occurred while they were teenagers.
The programme contains allegations of sexual assault, sexualised communication with minors, grooming and unlawful sexual activity. Leto has not been charged in connection with the claims featured in the documentary, and the allegations have not been tested or proven in court.
🎥 What Is
Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret
About?
The BBC documentary examines allegations surrounding Jared Leto, who is known both for his Oscar-winning acting career and as the frontman of rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars.
Ten women reportedly spoke to the documentary’s producers, with nine said to be discussing their experiences publicly for the first time.
Four women make allegations involving conduct that may have broken the law. The incidents they describe are said to have taken place between 2002 and 2016, when the women were teenagers.
The documentary includes claims involving:
- Alleged sexual assault
- Alleged unlawful sexual activity with a 17-year-old
- Sexually explicit communication with teenagers
- Alleged grooming and manipulation
- Attempts to arrange private meetings with young fans
- An alleged request for one woman to sign a non-disclosure agreement
These are extremely serious claims, and each remains an allegation unless established through legal proceedings.
⚠️ Former Thirty Seconds to Mars Staff Also Speak Out
The programme reportedly includes testimony from former members of staff connected with Thirty Seconds to Mars.
Some of those interviewed describe feeling uncomfortable about Leto’s alleged interactions with young female fans, including teenagers who were reportedly invited into private or backstage settings.
Their accounts raise difficult questions about the responsibility of touring organisations, management teams and others working around famous performers.
The relationship between musicians and fans can already contain a considerable imbalance of status and influence. When young or underage fans are involved, safeguarding must take priority over access, reputation or celebrity.
There should never be a backstage pass around basic responsibility.
🔍 BBC Says Accounts Were Corroborated
The BBC says parts of the women’s accounts were supported through materials including messages, photographs and testimony from friends, relatives or other witnesses.
That does not itself amount to a criminal conviction, but it forms part of the documentary’s investigation into the allegations.
The programme also explores why concerns and rumours can circulate within the entertainment industry for years without producing meaningful public scrutiny.
Fame can create an enormous protective wall around an individual. Fans may be reluctant to speak against someone they admire, employees may fear losing their jobs and those making allegations may expect disbelief, harassment or legal pressure.
That culture of silence is one of the central issues raised by the documentary.
🎭 Has Jared Leto Responded?
Leto and his representatives reportedly did not provide a response to the BBC’s questions concerning the new documentary before its release.
His representatives previously denied allegations published in a separate 2025 investigation, describing those earlier claims as false.
At the time of writing, no criminal charges have been announced relating to the allegations presented in Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret.
It remains essential to state clearly that allegations are not convictions. However, that legal principle should not be used as an excuse to mock, dismiss or attack the women who have chosen to speak publicly.
Both fairness and compassion matter.
🎸 A Major Story for the Rock Community
This is not simply a Hollywood story.
Jared Leto has fronted Thirty Seconds to Mars for decades, building a huge international audience and regularly performing at major arenas and festivals.
That means the allegations will inevitably be discussed throughout the rock community, particularly among fans who have followed the band for years.
People may feel shocked, angry, confused or deeply disappointed. Some may struggle to separate music that has meant something to them from the allegations surrounding the person who created it.
There is no single correct emotional reaction to a story like this.
What matters is that discussion remains respectful, particularly towards those who have shared allegations of abuse or exploitation.
This is not the moment for fan wars, celebrity worship or social-media point-scoring. These are claims involving real people and potentially lasting trauma.
🖤 The Wider Question Facing the Music Industry
The documentary once again raises a question the music business has avoided for far too long:
How are young fans protected when they enter spaces controlled by powerful adults?
Safeguarding cannot begin and end with a policy buried on a website. It must exist backstage, on tour buses, inside hotels, at meet-and-greets and anywhere artists or staff interact privately with younger fans.
Bands, promoters, managers and venues should have clear procedures covering:
- The protection of underage fans
- Private backstage access
- Staff reporting responsibilities
- Appropriate artist-and-fan boundaries
- Independent routes for raising concerns
- Protection for whistleblowers and witnesses
Rock ’n’ roll has always celebrated rebellion, freedom and breaking rules. None of that excuses exploitation, abuse or the misuse of fame.
Being famous does not place anyone above accountability.
💬 The Riff Report’s Position
The allegations featured in this documentary are deeply disturbing and deserve to be treated seriously.
Jared Leto has not been convicted of any offence in connection with the programme, and the claims remain allegations. That distinction is important and must be maintained.
It is equally important that the women who have spoken are not subjected to harassment or abuse simply because their accounts concern a famous performer.
The rock and metal community is at its strongest when it protects people rather than reputations.
We can love loud music, sweaty venues and complete festival-field chaos while still demanding responsibility from the people standing onstage.
That should not be controversial, mun. It should be the bare minimum.
Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret is available through the BBC. Viewer discretion is strongly advised due to its discussion of alleged sexual abuse and exploitation.
Anyone affected by the issues raised in this article should consider contacting a trusted person or a specialist sexual-assault support organisation. You are not alone, and what happened is not your fault.
