The Cure frontman has unleashed a gloriously blunt attack on footballโ€™s increasingly bloated showbiz circus โ€” and plenty of supporters are cheering him on.

Robert Smith has never been a man known for fake smiles, carefully polished PR statements or pretending everything is lovely when it clearly isnโ€™t.

Now, The Cureโ€™s legendary frontman has turned his eyeliner-lined glare towards FIFA, its president Gianni Infantino, Donald Trump and the first-ever full-scale halftime show at a World Cup Final.

And his message was about as subtle as a two-footed tackle in the centre circle:

โ€œPlease just f* off.โ€**

Honestly, mun โ€” you can almost hear millions of traditional football supporters nodding in agreement while putting the kettle on. ๐Ÿซ–โšฝ

๐ŸŽค THE WORLD CUP GETS THE SUPER BOWL TREATMENT

For the first time in the competitionโ€™s history, the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final is being presented with a major halftime concert inspired by the enormous entertainment productions staged during the NFLโ€™s Super Bowl.

The show has been curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and features a huge international line-up including Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, BTS, Burna Boy and Coldplay.

The spectacle is also connected to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, with organisers using the event to raise money for educational opportunities for children around the world.

On paper, it sounds enormous.

Global superstars. A massive television audience. Fireworks. Celebrity appearances. Enough production equipment to frighten every groundskeeper within a fifty-mile radius.

But for Smith, the issue isnโ€™t really the musicians involved.

It is the feeling that FIFA has taken the biggest match in football and stuffed it with even more corporate spectacle, political theatre and unnecessary bells and whistles.

Because apparently a World Cup Final was no longer dramatic enough on its own.

๐Ÿ–ค ROBERT SMITH GOES FULL ROBERT SMITH

Smith initially reacted to the halftime-show announcement through The Cureโ€™s social media, using the hashtags โ€œbread and circusesโ€ and โ€œplease just f* off.โ€**

He later made clear that his fury was not aimed personally at Chris Martin or the artists performing. Instead, his anger was directed towards FIFAโ€™s decision to imitate the Super Bowl and turn footballโ€™s most important fixture into a gigantic entertainment package.

Smith also aimed his sarcasm at FIFA president Gianni Infantino and criticised the involvement of U.S. President Donald Trump in the surrounding ceremony and trophy presentation.

It was vintage Robert Smith: blunt, darkly funny and completely uninterested in playing the celebrity diplomacy game.

No carefully rehearsed statement.

No โ€œwith all due respectโ€.

Just a goth icon staring directly into the heart of modern sporting excess and telling it to do one.

Proper job. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿค˜

โšฝ โ€œBREAD AND CIRCUSESโ€

Smithโ€™s use of the phrase โ€œbread and circusesโ€ was particularly pointed.

The expression is often used to describe extravagant entertainment being used to distract people from deeper political, social or institutional problems.

In Smithโ€™s eyes, the halftime show appears to represent something much bigger than a few pop stars appearing on a football pitch.

It is another example of major sporting events becoming increasingly dominated by sponsorships, celebrity appearances, political photo opportunities and carefully manufactured โ€œmomentsโ€.

The football itself risks becoming just one part of the package.

Somewhere between the advertising breaks, celebrity introductions and camera shots of important-looking people sitting in expensive seats, there is apparently still a match happening.

๐ŸŸ๏ธ DOES FOOTBALL ACTUALLY NEED THIS?

Football fans have never required much encouragement to create an atmosphere.

Give them a stadium, two teams and ninety minutes of jeopardy, and they will provide the noise themselves.

Theyโ€™ll sing.

Theyโ€™ll bounce.

Theyโ€™ll argue with the referee from 200 yards away.

Theyโ€™ll suddenly become tactical experts despite spending the afternoon drinking warm lager from a plastic cup.

That is the entertainment.

The World Cup Final already contains everything sport is supposed to deliver: nerves, drama, heartbreak, joy and the possibility of one moment changing a playerโ€™s life forever.

Does it really need Madonna, Coldplay, giant lighting rigs and a squadron of dancers appearing between halves?

Supporters of the show argue that it brings football and music together, appeals to a broader global audience and raises money for a worthwhile cause.

Critics believe it represents the Americanisation and over-commercialisation of the game, while also raising concerns about extending the traditional 15-minute interval and potentially affecting playersโ€™ preparation and recovery.

๐ŸŽธ ROCK STARS AND FOOTBALL: A BEAUTIFUL, CHAOTIC MARRIAGE

Robert Smithโ€™s reaction shouldnโ€™t come as a massive surprise.

The Cure frontman is a lifelong football supporter and a dedicated Queens Park Rangers fan. He understands that supporting a club is not a polished entertainment experience.

It is suffering.

It is false hope.

It is paying too much for food.

It is standing in the rain while someone behind you explains why the manager should have started with two holding midfielders.

Basically, it is very similar to attending a British music festival โ€” only with fewer bands and slightly more aggressive discussions about substitutions.

Smithโ€™s criticism comes from someone who genuinely loves the game rather than a celebrity jumping onto the football bandwagon for a bit of publicity.

He doesnโ€™t appear to object to music existing alongside football.

He objects to football being treated as though it needs rescuing by a corporate variety show.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ DONALD TRUMP ENTERS THE CONVERSATION

Smithโ€™s comments also took aim at Donald Trumpโ€™s role in the occasion.

Trumpโ€™s appearance alongside FIFA leadership has added another layer of controversy to an event already overflowing with celebrity, commercial and political attention.

Smith mocked the cosy relationship between Trump and Infantino while questioning how much of the World Cup spectacle remained focused on the supporters and players rather than powerful figures placing themselves at the centre of the cameras.

Politics and international football have always crossed paths, of course.

World Cups are enormous cultural events watched by billions, and governments have never been shy about using them for prestige and influence.

But Smith clearly believes the whole thing has disappeared too far down the showbiz rabbit hole.

And judging by the response online, he is far from alone.

๐Ÿ”ฅ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Robert Smithโ€™s delivery may have possessed all the delicacy of a guitar amplifier falling down a staircase, but the argument behind it is one shared by plenty of football supporters.

The World Cup Final does not need help becoming important.

It is already the biggest match on the planet.

People donโ€™t watch it because they are waiting for a celebrity cameo. They watch because one team will lift the trophy while another collapses into the grass wondering what might have been.

That raw emotion cannot be manufactured by a production company.

At the same time, using a global stage to raise money for childrenโ€™s education is clearly a positive aim, and millions of viewers will undoubtedly enjoy the performance.

The debate is not really about whether the artists are talented.

It is about whether every major sporting event must now become an enormous, sponsored, celebrity-packed content machine.

Robert Smith has delivered his verdict.

Leave football alone, stop trying to turn everything into the Super Bowl and โ€” in the politest possible goth terminology โ€” please just f* off.**

Tidy. ๐Ÿ–คโšฝ๐Ÿค˜

๐Ÿ’ฌ WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Is Robert Smith absolutely spot-on?

Does the World Cup Final need a massive halftime concert, or should FIFA stick to the football and stop cramming more spectacle into an event that is already enormous?

Let us know, butt โ€” and try not to start a VAR argument in the comments. ๐Ÿ˜ˆโšฝ
